To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

I think veggie and halal are fine or non halal meat and veggie. Either way everyone has an alternative.

Absolutely find it very uncomfortable and will say so.

Uncomfortable why? Is your atheism a rejection with residual belief or actual non-belief? Genuine question. I would consider the former to be agnosticism personally. Not a trap, genuine question.

Personally I just hear noise; my only consideration is that they are brainwashed idiots. But then I am an atheist with no regard for the truth of any religion - but I am happy for everyone to crack on observing their own beliefs

Poltershighclimb99 · 19/06/2024 08:47

I’m surprised at all the comments with such disgust against halal meat. Because It doesn’t matter if it’s halal or not. All animals suffer to end up on your plate. There is no such thing as humane slaughter.

I wouldn't choose to eat halal meat and I would be a little bit annoyed if the only meat option was halal, so I'd choose the veggie option or not bother.

No, I'm not racist. Not in the slightest. But I don't want my meat blessed, it goes against my own beliefs. I've undoubtedly ate halal meat before unknowingly, but I live in an area where the Muslim population is almost zero, so I'm orettt sure most of the takeaways and restaurants use non halal meat. I usually End up choosing veggie options although I'm not vegetarian.

Why would a meat burger contain eggs and flour? Burgers should contain meat and a bit of seasoning. local butcher provided ours for sports day and they were really nice. gluten free obviously

To bind them.

Oh and for information some Muslims choose to be veggie.

How many posters will happily sit down to a chicken tikka masala and not give a thought that ALL meat from Indian restaurants and takeaways is halal? All of it.

Some Indian restaurants are halal but since the majority religion in India is not Islam but Hinduism, I doubt they all are.

What is your reaction to the Christian's you know saying they will pray for you whenever something is wrong?

Doesn’t really matter, but I would object if my GP offered to pray for me when sick.

It’s noise to me too as an atheist. They are not brainless idiots who are managing to convert so much of the U.K. meat offerings to halal though are they? Who are the brainless idiots thinking that’s insignificant…

There are very few Indian restaurants in the UK run by Indians (Hindu or otherwise). Most are actually Pakistani or Bangladeshi - Muslims.

Why can’t the non-Muslims choose veggie?

To bind them.

I make homemade burgers all the time they don’t need anything to bind them just use a burger press.

Why should they? I wouldn't. I'd go without if a veggie burger was my only option.

Apart from them usually being even more processed they generally dry out on a BBQ. When I do a BBQ they aren't even offered - corncobs or pepper and onion skewers are

Rosscameasdoody · 19/06/2024 08:57

So you’re considering religious needs, but completely disregarding those who may have moral objections to eating Halal food ? I would be furious if l found out l had been deliberately served Halal food without my knowledge. If you’ve taken on the responsibility for sorting the burgers then you need to do it properly. Halal, standard meat and veggie. As well as different cooking facilities for all three to avoid cross contamination.

Same, just mince, but they need more care when cooking.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 19/06/2024 08:58

So you’ll cater for everyone else but people who you assume would be happy either way the vegan option or nothing at all? That’s pretty shit. I wouldn’t eat halal and absolutely not eat vegan.

Aswad · 19/06/2024 09:00

VisitationRights · 18/06/2024 21:53

I don’t and would not ever go to Muslim country for any reason.

Good riddance then!

sparkleowl · 19/06/2024 09:01

Veggie burgers taste fine and cuts out the hassle of who eats what.
plantburgers are great!

Nottherealslimshady · 19/06/2024 09:01

I find it so funny that people try to take a moral high ground over halal. As though the animal killed for their burger was walking happily around a field grazing, instantly died and felt no fear or pain. News flash, your non halal cow was terrified, and had been for hours, watched its friends die, heard them, and may not have even been stunned correctly becuase of how many get slaughtered in one go. She may have been pregnant. She may have been unable to even stand by the time she was finally stunned.

If you are a person that only eats high welfare, humanely dispatched meat, you won't be buying the cheap burgers from OPs stall anyway.

Razorwire · 19/06/2024 09:03

Don’t take this decision on your own. Ask committee head, or someone at school how make everyone happy with food within budget.
Possible they planned a halal food booth ?

if something goes wrong, you have someone else to get blamed.

PMSL at the idea of 'non religious meat'.

Of course there is !! If l was going to slaughter l’m pretty sure l’d prefer to be stunned before having my throat slit. Halal is cruel and unnecessary. That’s why the disgust.

I have to disagree with you there. I've tried plantburgers but haven't found one that didn't taste like sawdust.
