To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

Non8d do beef burgers and veggie ones. I wouldn't waste time with halal.

Where I live, many KFC are halal. Why can’t Muslim people go to an independent takeaway where it’s halal?

Can you imagine how the media would react if McDs started to have halal places?

If you don’t like halal, then don’t eat it! Simple! Why do you want to banish the Muslims to some random independent takeaway, why shouldn’t they have KFC?!

Btw McDonald's does have halal certification and a halal menu in countries like India, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Germany and Pakistan. They trialled it in UK but it wasn’t cost effective for them as the country has a smaller Muslim population.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 19/06/2024 06:18

However I think he is a minority and could have veggie

those who want halal could also simply take veggie burgers. That’s not an argument for halal imo.

LynetteScavo · 19/06/2024 06:22

I bet you wish you hadn't offered to take charge of the BBQ now @NameChangedJune Grin

Honestly, burgers are such a faff I would only do hot dogs. Probably just vegetarian ones (kids don't seem to notice the difference) if there are lots of Muslims. Hot dogs don't need to be cooked to order and you can just dish them out.

Yeah, I get what you are saying, just do Halal and veggie if there are more Muslims in the area.

Also just to clarify, some Hindu’s do eat Beef.

Hindus of Kerala eat Beef and here's why! — Steemit

Hindus generally consider cow as a holy animal that they avoid eating beef. But this isn't true for Hindus of Kerala… by ngub05

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 19/06/2024 06:24

OP, just do halal beef and veggie. It’s really nice that you thought of this living in a large Muslim population area.

I don’t get these hypocrites who eat meat and never question where their meat comes from, suddenly taking issue with eating a halal burger at a school fete. 🙄

Tesco halal meat uses a stun process. You could buy cheap non halal beef burgers and you have no idea how they were killed. People are just being islamophobic and I say this as a white non-Muslim.

Just buy one set of the same burgers and on the day split them into two piles of 'Halal' and 'non halal' and just save yourself the hassle.

This is such a shit advice :(

I have never once in my life seen anyone cooking a burger 'to order' during a fair 😂... They do actually just dish them out.

If you live in Auburn, Australia.... Then your local McDonald's is halal, lol. So are many in that area.

The media doesn't care.

What on earth is going on in England to cause such vicious anti Muslim hysteria?

Veeg34 · 19/06/2024 06:42

All slaughter is inhumane. Everyone getting angry and halal/non-halal is ridiculous. It’s all cruel.

minisoksmakehardwork · 19/06/2024 06:48

I know Sikhs who will not eat halal meat. If there is doubt they go for the vegetarian option. My understanding is this is not due to the method of killing, but because of the ritualistic way in which it is killed 'in the name of god' - Sikh meat is similarly killed in a single stroke, but there is no devotion to god made at the same time.

There's no easy answer to this so if you have a large Muslim population, I'd go with halal and veggie for anyone who objects to the style of killing.

@PumpkinsAndCoconuts Actually, as a good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim, an argument could be made that Muslims might buy a halal burger and who knows if the non-religious portion will even care because it’s still meat? Some people are getting their knickers in a twist about the mere thought of being offered halal burgers when they’re not the ones who will be served at the school PTA summer fair. But from experience, most halal eaters often eaten eat vegetarian and aren’t expecting halal meat and therefore ask if something is halal. Whereas, some non-halal eaters might not mind, there clearly are others who would if they were given halal meat.

Those who truly care, would perhaps be relieved that the animal was killed “in the name of God” as the life wasn’t taken in vain and has served a purpose. Therefore, seeing as you’ve just said that Sikhs might avoid halal meat because of the style of killing, there are others, who aren’t Muslims, who’d happily buy halal meat. I’ve always assumed Sikhs had a similar diet to Hindus so I learnt something new today.

Dont be so ignorant.

I am sorry but this made me laugh my head off. What a cheeky comment. I wonder if people would actually do something like this?

Tiiina · 19/06/2024 07:07

I always thought that Halal butchering involves some sort of prayer. I am an atheist and wants to live in a secular society. I would not eat halal as I think it’s wrong that we are now doing Muslim prayers before slaughtering in the U.K.
I would not eat a burger at a school fair at all as I would worry about food poisoning 😅

Leidenschaft24 · 19/06/2024 01:32

I wish people would stop labelling other's choices as islamophobic.
Islamophobia would be trying to prevent muslims from accessing halal food, not a non muslim choosing not to purchase or eat halal food themselves.

But that’s what you’re trying to do, prevent Muslims from accessing halal burgers at this event.

kikisparks · 19/06/2024 07:15

Latenighttelly · 18/06/2024 22:03

Do Muslims not care about animal welfare? I'm curious?

Do non vegans? Pigs scream as they are gassed (go stand outside a slaughterhouse while it’s happening and you’ll hear it), day old male chicks are gassed or chucked live into a blender as un-needed in the egg industry, newborn male calves are shot in the head, pregnant cows are sent to the slaughter house (as higher slaughter weight) and their is fetus cut out of them before their bodies are cut apart, sheep have their tails cut or banded off, horns cut, chickens have been bred to gain so much weight in a few weeks they can’t hold themselves up, this is just the start of it. None of this is the fault of “Muslims” and to participate in all of this yet condemn halal smacks of racism.

Because KFC are independent and have chosen to do so.

You’re free to toddle off to an independent non-halal chicken shop.

Most KFCs are franchises anyway, so each individual franchise decides.

Springchickenonion · 19/06/2024 07:18

What a stir this has caused! I'm supposing those who are against halal also then are against any farms that aren't free range...

Because halal meat has to be free range... so if halal makes you angry, a lot of other farms that arent free range must make you absolutely livid!

kikisparks · 19/06/2024 07:18

Veeg34 · 19/06/2024 06:42

Exactly! If people really cared they’d go vegan but having faux outrage at halal meat whilst eating the body parts of other young animals doesn’t involve any effort or change.

Peonies12 · 19/06/2024 07:19

Just do halal, ridiculous everyone here saying it’s cruel. You’re eating a dead animal, however you get there is cruel. They’ve probably eaten halal meat unknowing loads, it’s very common.

As an atheist, why would you care if prayers are played before slaughtering the animals. What difference does it make? For me, it's no different to having Madonna playing in the background or whatever...it's just background noise that means nothing to me but clearly matters to other people. I can't see the problem?

From my perspective, there are far bigger issues with the meat industry than what's playing on the CD player.

That's missing the point really

Is it so difficult to get a few non halal burgers? Everyone else will eat what's cooked regardless so they won't go to waste.

Its just a little thing that can be so inclusive.
