To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

1000 replies

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

But for most people, the only other reason why someone wouldn't want to eat halal meat would be concerns about animal welfare, and anyone who genuinely cares about that wouldn't eat a standard beefburger either.

I understand that some religious people might have specific prohibitions on eating ritually slaughtered meat but that will only apply to a tiny minority.

What other reasons are there?

MsAmerica · 19/06/2024 01:44

This seems like yet another question which has no business being here, but should rather be posted under Food or Religion.

Seems to me that anyone fussy about animal flesh - which would include not only Muslims, but vegetarians - should just choose another option entirely, without meat.

WalkingonWheels · 19/06/2024 01:28

I have a bowel condition that unfortunately doesn't let me eat much at all, especially fibre. It rules out any beans, pulse, seeds and most fruit and veg. Which is rough because I absolutely love food, especially fruit and veg 😔 Meat is one of the only food groups I can semi tolerate.

But, I'm a extreme case and if I'm going anywhere like this, I take my own food or liquid meal replacement in case there's nothing I can have. A plain burger would be nice though!

Gotcha.

I have IBD so also need to avoid fibre, beans, seeds etc.

Ok - a rehash:

Veggie BBQ plus hot egg rolls for me, @WalkingonWheels and anyone else avoiding weird veggie ingredients / UPF

WalkingonWheels · 19/06/2024 01:49

Mmm, hot egg rolls.

Popatop · 19/06/2024 02:06

Choosing 1 form of religiously blessed/ prepared meat over another isn’t really appropriate. Agree with your DH. Many people also avoid that due to animal welfare concerns.

I'm not veggie but . . . . Just do an all veggie BBQ. It's fine honestly and most people would barely notice. Even meat frankfurters are 75% sawdust anyway.

Try a variety of different veggie burgers and sausages, give them interesting names - have a tasting contest chalk scoreboard so people can mark their favourites for next time - and have lots of cheeses for burgers and sauces too.

I am vegetarian but you can’t sell someone a vegetarian burger without telling them (allergies/intolerances for one) so of course they will notice and many will mind)

Why should the "non religious" eat Halal?

Why would it matter if you have no strong religious views either way? I do some work in an "Indian" restaurant ( run by Bangladeshi people). All the meat there is halal. It doesn't bother me in the slightest eating it

ForGreyKoala · 19/06/2024 03:23

I would just offer halal and veggie. I'm not Muslim but if I wanted a burger I wouldn't care if it was halal. As long as people are told, and if they feel that strongly about it they can eat veggie or go without.

I imagine plenty of people have eaten halal meat without knowing.

ForGreyKoala · 19/06/2024 03:31

SergeantDawkins · 19/06/2024 00:24

I’ve seen enough grey mince on the supermarket shelves. But yes I’m sure your cow mince is special. I expect that cow was cuddled and sung lullabies to death.

I can't speak for the UK but in my almost 65 years I have never seen "grey" mince, it's always red here. You must frequent some strange supermarkets!

countcalculia · 19/06/2024 00:18

A sobering read. Animal welfare is an oxymoron, My DH works in the food industry and says there will be a time when future generations will be baffled that we ate meat.

Do you seriously think we are the only generations to have eaten meat? 😂😂

Future generations will also be eating it, for a long, long time. Meat eaters outnumber those who don't quite substantially, especially in agricultural countries like mine. Your DH is rather naive.

I went off to google what halal method of slaughtering animals actually entails - I have to admit my ignorant twat mother brainwashed me with the identical description that the previous poster made about halal meat. I feel like it was a wide spread mistruth in the 80s and 90s. We are a Hindu household so we don’t eat beef but that’s another thing altogether. But after reading the facts it seems halal is better. For everyone.

You don't get to make that decision for me thank you

Vistada · 19/06/2024 03:45

Non halal beef should be the default, with a number of halal alongside for those who require it, and veggie alongside for same reason.

Your husbands right- can't see why you wouldn't just have non halal too?

Yazzi · 19/06/2024 03:55

Ah, a classic bonkers islamophobic Mumsnet thread.

I wonder if all those tripping over each other to declare their disgust at halal certified meat would be quite so emotionally impassioned discussing kosher meat (which unlike halal meat, is most certainly not stunned).

Reading this from Australia, where almost all meat is halal (because a significant proportion is exported to Islamic countries and it's easiest to slaughter all livestock in the same way). Every KFC serves halal meat. Every Nando's. Many other chains. Most high end restaurants. The meat production is largely ethical (as ethical as any mass produced meat can be) and the non Muslims have survived.

Some of you need to get a grip.

Yazzi · 19/06/2024 04:23

Leidenschaft24 · 19/06/2024 01:32

I wish people would stop labelling other's choices as islamophobic.
Islamophobia would be trying to prevent muslims from accessing halal food, not a non muslim choosing not to purchase or eat halal food themselves.

It's Islamophobic to come and label halal meat as "barbaric" because of a slaughter method that a minority of halal meat is associated with (non stun).

To use a non factual and nonsensical reason (animal cruelty- as though meat simply being non halal guards against animal cruelty) to express revulsion and disgust about the food Muslims eat.

The word barbaric has a long history in terms of how white English people talk about Muslims. Sure that's just a coincidence though 🙄

Well said! There are some extremely ignorant posters here.

No doubt you have read the threads which pop up from time to time about Australia and NZ, and how racist people are in this part of the world - rather ironic therefore to read this particular thread.

seedsandseeds · 19/06/2024 04:47

I don't know why I bother opening such threads when I know mumsnet is full of racist white people.

JoniBlue · 19/06/2024 05:21

I would serve both types plus a veggie burger.

Ponderingwindow · 19/06/2024 05:29

As usual, everyone bends themselves in knots to deal with people who make up rules about what they will and won’t eat. They could eat the food, they are just picky, but put a special label on it so people don’t call them picky. It’s ridiculous.

going all veggie is a nightmare for allergies. Pretty much guarantees there will be nothing for many people to eat.

mrschocolatte · 19/06/2024 05:35

dunkdemunder · 18/06/2024 22:51

@mrschocolatte

I’m confused OP. If your DP is a Sikh and religious he wouldn't be eating any meat so not sure what he’s worried about?
Good grief the ignorance on here is astounding. Sikhs can eat meat.

If you are a baptised Sikh then no you can’t. It’s against your religion. I should know as I am from a Sikh family.

Happilyobtuse · 19/06/2024 05:59

BlueMum16 · 18/06/2024 21:46

Might be a dumb question but is it not easier to do hot dogs and veggie options? Or chicken and veggie.

Avoid beef altogether

If most of the population is wanting halal meat then they are muslims. Muslims don’t eat hot dogs as it is usually pork. If chicken it would have to be halal anyway for them to eat it.

sashh · 19/06/2024 06:02

Can I suggest you do fish burgers? Fish with gills can be consumed by most people of various faiths and obviously of none.

If not 'burgers' then fish fingers. If you are not sure about BBQing them just put some foil on the BBQ.

So you could have beef burgers, fish fingers and vegi burgers.

Fish fingers are cheap so you can make a healthy profit.

As for the halal debate, unless the OP is going to a specialist halal butcher halal meat is usually killed in exactly the same way as other meat but with a CD playing prayers.

Auburngal · 19/06/2024 06:03

Where I live, many KFC are halal. Why can’t Muslim people go to an independent takeaway where it’s halal?

Can you imagine how the media would react if McDs started to have halal places?

sunshinestar1986 · 19/06/2024 06:05

It's actually a requirement in the UK to stun animals before slaughter

Howbizarre22 · 19/06/2024 06:06

Definitely need a veggie option. It’s 2024 a lot of people don’t eat meat.

Happilyobtuse · 19/06/2024 06:07

mrschocolatte · 19/06/2024 05:35

Baptised Sikhs are very few and have strict rules as they are dedicating their life to serving Waheguru.

Most regular Sikhs eat meat.
