To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

Lol we all know exactly what you mean. It’s not about the meat

It's perfectly ok not to agree with the ideology of any religion though, and to want nothing to do with the practices. That's not [insert religion]phobic. It is [insert religion]phobic if you try to prevent others practicing their religion or show hatred or prejudice toward them because of it.
Personally choosing to avoid halal meat is not islamophobic.

@Leidenschaft24 dont worry, most people know what you're saying. That we shouldn't just sleepwalk into a slow acceptance of Halal methods as becoming the sole default method, simply because most people just care about the end result, i.e.a burger on a plate.

Ultimately there has to be awareness and continued choice.

Nice try, that’s not what she said though. She said there is no need to serve halal meat, that non-halal and veggie should be served. At an event where most of the meat eaters are Muslim.

Sounds like you have similar double standards.

@Simonjt yes it is forbidden/prohibited to eat meat that's been slaughtered for religious/ritual reasons!

Totally agree.

The tenth guru, Guru Gobind Singh, prohibited the Sikhs from the consumption of Kutha (any ritually slaughtered) meat because of the Sikh belief that sacrificing an animal in the name of God is mere ritualism (something to be avoided).

Are you confusing my suggestion for this one event with food options in general?
Also, stop putting anyone down just because their opinion differs from yours.

@NameChangedJune maybe too late for this year.. our school goes out to each of the school communities to do the food - Spanish, Irish, Philippine etc.

It means there is a choice of food available on the day and not all left to one person. People can then choose what they want. (Our school is pretty rare in that the PTA is very strong.)

Halal and veggie. Despite all the bluster, that is what is going to sell more. You could also just not specify halal and let people know when asked. Then the non religious wouldn’t know

But you could say that in reverse couldn’t you? I’m not an advocate of conning anybody into something they wouldn’t eat if aware, whether Muslim or non Muslim.

But trying to prevent Muslims from eating halal meat when they are the majority of the meat eaters IS Islamophobic.

Forgot to add - halal meat should not be the default - Muslim countries only have halal - there is no other option. And no - I'm not Islamophobic.

Nobody is trying to prevent muslims from eating halal though, just trying to consider what options might work best. Stop making this something it isn't.

Yes, that's what I said.
That doesn't equate to me stopping muslims from eating halal, being as this is one snack at one fair once a year.

OneTC · 18/06/2024 23:28

@Leidenschaft24 if you got invited to someone's house for dinner and the host said grace would you reject it?

You can’t cater to everybody. I’m vegan, I know this is by choice and people who have dietary needs due to religion or allergies obviously have it ‘harder’ as it’s not a choice. But I think when you have certain dietary requirements, you have to come to terms with that you cannot have those needs met everywhere. It’s great if it can be - but it shouldn’t be something that’s expected of people.
