To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

So why do you think non-halal meat should be served to Muslims?

Nobody IS serving them non-halal meat. As grown adults they will presumably be familiar with selecting an option which suits their needs?

Just do plant based, no need to worry about exactly how the animal was murdered so you could eat its corpse

Yes, the meat options at DC's school are halal. I assumed this was standard.

Not where we live.
DC doesn't eat at school anyway though.

Not true, Sikhs aren't supposed to eat any form of ritually slaughtered meat! However, their level of adherence may vary.
In fact even Muslims, despite the big fuss made about their religious requirements, don't all follow it closely . There's just a lot more of them, and a lot more religious ones causing social pressure , that it becomes a big deal. Many are culturally Muslim, just like how many atheists in practice are culturally Christian, but they don't tend to draw attention to themselves.

I'm from a Muslim country and most things are halal, Sikhs can't really eat any of it but because they're a minority nobody gives a fig. It's similar here. So many things are 'halal by standard' because people don't know that Sikhs can't eat halal meat. And they're not a big enough group to exert enough pressure for anybody to care, or have a culture of doing so anyway. They just go with vegetarian if they're strict.

OP halal and veggie are fine given the demographics and this is to raise money after all! If you were in a majority Hindu area for example it would be stupid to have beef burgers and veggie.

Edited

Kutha isn’t forbidden, its just ideally not recommended, in reality the majority of sikhs who are meat eaters will eat halal meat, kosher and bali not as likely as it isn’t as common. Yes temple will likely be meat free, but you’d be hard pushed to find a significant number of meat eating sikhs who don’t eat kosher.

But cow corpses taste so nice!

Genevieva · 18/06/2024 23:04

Halal and kosher slaughter is only permitted for consumption by religious minorities, because the animal welfare standards are lower than standard slaughter. You could equally get non-halal burgers and suggest that people who don’t want them have the vegetarian option.

It's up to OP what she does, but no, it does not make sense to me to only offer halal.

Why not?

LSTMS30555 · 18/06/2024 23:05

@Simonjt yes it is forbidden/prohibited to eat meat that's been slaughtered for religious/ritual reasons!

Even if halal eaters are in the majority? Wouldn’t it make most sense to cater to whatever the majority want?

Halal slaughter is the same (in the UK anyway), yes a cd will be played and it will be in a pig free building, but thats the only difference in slaughter. Kosher however is different as stunning isn’t carried out, I would assume there are similar rules on pigs as well.

Not all halal slaughter involves stunning and it’s impossible to know when you buy it. It’s about 65:35. The only way to be confident that you are buying high welfare meat is but buying non-halal. And non-Muslims are not meant to buy or consume halal meat because they are not eligible for the exemption, though it is not a crime to ignore this.

If you make statements how can you expect not to be challenged?

You read wrong. Only 17% of Nando’s restaurants (out of 465) are halal, in areas with a high Muslim population. It’s about supply and demand.

I must have read that my local one was halal I think in that case. I live in a very multi ethnic area. Makes sense.

In the UK? I don’t think there are any halal branches in the UK.
