To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

Yes, that's what I said.
That doesn't equate to me stopping muslims from eating halal, being as this is one snack at one fair once a year.

Well, it does actually. Because you’re advocating no choice in meat options for Muslims at this event.

Having halal only burgers also means no choice for those who don't eat halal.

But why wouldn’t someone cater to the majority of meat eaters at this one event? If the majority eat halal, get halal meat and anyone who doesn’t want to eat halal can have the veggie option (I don’t agree with the people who say don’t tell people that the meat is halal - people should have the choice to not eat it). If the majority don’t eat halal, get non-halal meat and the people who want to eat halal can have the veggie option.

But the majority of meat eaters are Muslim at this event. Why would you cater only to the minority but not the majority?

hulahooper2 · 18/06/2024 23:31

i would never eat halal , so offer non halal burgers & veggie burgers

It doesn’t seem anyone will be force fed any burgers, so they would only be forced to partake if they chose to buy a halal burger, when they could just buy the vegetarian option.

The posters object to the animal rights side of things, but don’t feel they can say that explicitly (is how it seems to me)

@Simonjt well now you are definitely lying. You can also get Mumsnet to verify that! Don't you dare accuse me of racism!

bravefox · 18/06/2024 23:32

I wonder if all the posters advocating for 'non-halal' options realise a huge number of restaurants/caterers serve halal by default and just don't make a big deal out of it

But they’re the minority. Why would you buy in loads of meat that Muslims (the majority meat eaters) won’t eat?

@Leidenschaft24 if you got invited to someone's house for dinner and the host said grace would you reject it?

Whoa thats unlocked a core memory from infant school. "For what we are about to receive, may the Lord make us truly thankful". I wonder if ( m )any UK schools still say that. It wasn't a faith school either.

@Simonjt isn’t lying. I’ve been on MN for years, he has always been proudly Sikh.

Yet you think its okay to mock my religion and to suggest i’m not sikh? Now you also accuse the racist abuse I received as not being true?

FairyRings · 18/06/2024 23:36

Why does everyone keep saying the majority are Muslim? Op said ‘lots’ are Muslim.

My issue isn't with OP catering for her target market, it's with those saying 'all meat eaters can just eat halal'. I was then accused of a whole host of things for pointing out that not everyone wants to eat halal meat.
She really needs some sort of info on who is actually likely to come along and what their preferences are.
TBH I like the idea of having an actual burger van there, with food hygiene certificates and knowledge of how to cater for veggies/non-halal/halal etc.

Of course they can say that, it has been said upthread already. And most halal meat is pre-stunned anyway, so what animal rights concerns do you have?
