To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

When did Bali become a Muslim country?

When did it become a country 🤔

When did Bali become a Muslim country?

I doubt she knows where Bali is. A lot of this knee jerk anger comes from ignorance.

Good point lol

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 22:55

These back and forth arguments are getting nowhere. Seems like OP should talk to school to get an idea what has worked previously and maybe create a poll in class whatsapp group chats to see the preferences??

Danfromdownunder · 18/06/2024 22:52

When did Bali become a Muslim country?

Oh dear God. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world over 230 million. About 90% of the population is Muslim.

What did you think it was?

mollyfolk · 18/06/2024 22:55

I don't need or want my food blessed, and do not want the option of non-halal to be eroded

but what difference does it make if the meat is blessed? If all meat became halal what difference would it make to you? As a non believer I’m fairly confident you can’t catch a religion through a burger.

I’m on team Halal and veggie (cooked separately) it’s a fundraising event - you need to sell what you think you’ll sell the most of.

No point to prove. It would just be easier if I could do a single type of beef burger for all, that most would be okay with.

Why must it be easier though?

If you can't cater 3 simple things, why not enlist someone to help?

The majority of the simplest BBQs tend to have burgers, chicken, hotdogs and veggie options as standard.

I'm sure you can manage 3 burgers of different varieties?

Again, it just looks as though you're trying to prove some sort of point/be the gatekeeper of food preferences.

Actually Sikhs are forbidden from eating meat that's been ritually slaughtered (halal & kosher) so seems unfair to the Sikhs attending also.

They are objections to kutha, but it isn’t forbidden.

Put up one of those little huts that you get at Christmas markets and do kangaroo burgers and bratwurst.

No doubt that will offend someone too.

@NameChangedJune you're never going to be able to cover all the options and make everyone happy.

Beef burgers and a veggie option - you decide what normal means but make sure it's clearly marked as exactly what it is, so those with preferences can avoid it accordingly.

Danfromdownunder · 18/06/2024 22:56

Bali is the only Hindu majority in Indonesia actually.

I'm not backtracking.

You said ‘I'd be serving non-halal meat and a veggie option. No need for the meat to be halal.’ At an event where the majority of meat eaters are Muslim.

Who cares what Muslims need right?

Indonesia is, as a whole.

Bali, although obviously part of Indonesia, is majority Hindu IIRC

I'm pretty certain that many schools just buy halal meat. Mine does.

Some of you need to see the difference between halal and kosher.

Yes, the meat options at DC's school are halal. I assumed this was standard.

The main thing that I am taking away from this is that either a lot of people have mixed up halal and kosher, or possibly halal procedures changed at some point. I would actually be curious to find out which is true.

TheArtfulWriter · 18/06/2024 22:59

Simonjt · 18/06/2024 22:05

Most Sikhs who eat meat will happily eat halal, Hindus as a majority don’t eat beef anyway, so don’t care if its halal or not as they have the vegetarian option. A lot of Hindus also would be wary of bbq meat being contaminated beef, so would likely avoid any chicken or lamb offerings as well.

Not true, Sikhs aren't supposed to eat any form of ritually slaughtered meat! However, their level of adherence may vary.
In fact even Muslims, despite the big fuss made about their religious requirements, don't all follow it closely . There's just a lot more of them, and a lot more religious ones causing social pressure , that it becomes a big deal. Many are culturally Muslim, just like how many atheists in practice are culturally Christian, but they don't tend to draw attention to themselves.

I'm from a Muslim country and most things are halal, Sikhs can't really eat any of it but because they're a minority nobody gives a fig. It's similar here. So many things are 'halal by standard' because people don't know that Sikhs can't eat halal meat. And they're not a big enough group to exert enough pressure for anybody to care, or have a culture of doing so anyway. They just go with vegetarian if they're strict.

OP halal and veggie are fine given the demographics and this is to raise money after all! If you were in a majority Hindu area for example it would be stupid to have beef burgers and veggie.

I do not want to add to the demand for blessed meat which I do not need or want.
Why is that so hard to understand?

Our school is non halal meat only. The veggie option is what anyone who is observant would order.
