To refuse to give my full date of birth to a delivery driver for my online food shop

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:36

I just placed an order for some groceries and provided photo ID on delivery - Oyster 60 plus photo card. The delivery driver refused to leave the shopping, there was one bottle of wine, as I refused to give my full date of birth. No wonder we have so much fraud!

Because someone would be bound to email Head Office saying ‘they didn’t ask for my DOB’ and then they would be sacked.

Not just sacked. They could be criminally liable. I have no issue with a supermarket employee making a reasonable enquiry as a part of avoiding a conviction.

If the OP is so vexed about it, they need to focus their energy where it matters. Starting with their local MP to begin a change in the law. Because no retailer can change their practices with the law as it stands.

A law intended to protect children, by the way.

Yeah. Probably.

They should just stick to the "Challenge25" policy that they use in store. If you look under 25, great here's my driver's licence/passport.

But asking 60 year old for ID is just daft, but I seem to be pissing in the wind here with this opinion.

Roseyjane · 19/06/2024 17:41

No one in their right mind thinks the devilry bloke is going to commit fraud with your dob. So refusing to say is likely about vanity and not wanting him to know how old you are. And that’s absurd.

It's just another low energy thinker directing their ire at the wrong person. Which is very much a thing these days.

The correct place for the OP to focus their - clearly precious - time and energy is firstly to the actual management of the supermarket. However they will merely point out they are interpreting the law. So really the people "to blame" are the government.

However this law was intended to protect children. And I'd rather it erred on the side of caution.

Yes and the ID has your date of birth on it! On some systems you have to type the customers DOB into the system. Are you always so paranoid?

I don't understand, the ID had the DOB on it so why did he need to ask?

Valeriekat · 19/06/2024 20:33

sandyhappypeople · 18/06/2024 20:00

He has to input it to prove he’s checked, it’s literally a box ticking exercise and he isn’t allowed to make one up, but well done for making a simple task 200 times harder for every single person involved in that transaction.

and then you’ve come on here to boast about it.. how embarrassing for you.

Why the snark?

She showed him an oyster 60+ card that doesn’t have your DOB on it. In supermarkets that’s not valid ID, it would be something like a passport that does have your DOB on it.

Somerandomgirl · 19/06/2024 20:40

Oh god... might aswell be afraid to give them your home address... you dont know what kind of delivery driver might come....dont open the door next time...
Joke aside,
Its a standart thing they always ask for dob now

MyMiniMetro · 19/06/2024 20:42

There will be a tick box where the delivery guy has to say he's seen ID to prove DOB/age. If he doesn't tick it, he gets in trouble, if he ticks to say he's seen it when he hasn't, he'd get in trouble. Give the chap a break. If he wanted to take your ID away or take a picture of it I'd be concerned, but just to see it is fine. What's he gonna do? Relax.

MissUltraViolet · 19/06/2024 20:45

He's just trying to do his job and the system he (the supermarket) uses requires a DOB to be put in. If he made one up and the store found out he'd lose his job. Why would he risk his job for you?

You have been unreasonable. Someone has picked your shopping, loaded it, delivered it, re-loaded it and someone else now has to deal with it when it gets back to store....because you think he wants to commit fraud? with your DOB?

So effin ridiculous.

I thought that - what happens to all the stuff she refused? Presumably they can’t put it back on the shelves? Will it just be wastage?

I did that occasionally, but our boss pressured us to get them delivered. It was only if they got really nasty and I'd always call the office to explain.

ID for voting is totally different. The staff are local or central government employees

My sister wasn't either.

Readytoplay · 19/06/2024 20:57

YABU to not give a birthdate ID. some shops are now operating an ‘In every case’ rule, mainly even if the person is well over 25, let alone 18, they will still ask.
I think this is partly due to young people (particularly females) looking a lot older these days than 30 years ago and yes I am talking about fillers that make 21 year old look like they are pushing 40.

the driver WBU, however, not to allow you to have the non-age-restricted items, which, according to your OP, was everything else. I mean, surely they have had to load it all back in the van.

Londonrach1 · 19/06/2024 20:59

Legal requirement..take this up with government rather than a delivery guy. Yabu and very rude to stop him doing his job. It's just a date...who cares...the guy forget it seconds later. Due to your silly behaviour he has paperwork to do.

Well spotted.

I wear a balaclava when I answer the door to the Tesco delivery person, and insist that we do not make eye contact.

They have to ask for legal reasons because there is alcohol in your order, you silly beggar!!

LadyLapsang · 18/06/2024 19:40

You don’t get asked for your date of birth in the supermarket. You may be asked for ID if you look young. I am in my 60s.

Just say a made up date of birth - I find people ask for this all over the place these days, so I just give out a made up one as I don't like to share personal details, unless really necessary. I clearly don't look like I am under 21 and it is rarely checked - most people just accept what you say

PippyLongTits · 20/06/2024 00:04

I don't think you did anything wrong.

Mossstitch · 20/06/2024 00:13

I've had alcohol in my online delivery from at least four different supermarkets and never been asked for ID or dob so it can't be a rule/law🤷‍♀️

WrinklyScrotum · 20/06/2024 00:16

I recently sent back a big weekly shop because of Sainsboz’s silly think 25 policy. I was out walking the dog and my nearly 18 year old was in. They refused to give her the shopping because she’s not 18. But I had no alcohol, etc. I don’t even drink.

So back it all went 🤷🏻‍♀️

Needmorelego · 20/06/2024 00:25

@WrinklyScrotum it's a shame you didn't read the policy on Sainsbury's website.
(this rule is nothing to do with the "Think 25" policy)
