To be annoyed at the lack of treatment for diabetes as everyone is snapping it up for weight loss?

lucie82 · 16/06/2024 23:52

Just as the title says really. Myself and other diabetics are having our meds chopped and changed because the pharmacy can't get hold of them. It would seem that they can't get hold of them as people are buying them for weight loss!
Why is everything all about an easy fix with weight loss? If you're taking "weight loss drugs" and not changing your diet and life style then surely once you stop taking them you will put the weight back on?

I wonder how many newbies we'll have coming over to the dark side after this thread, we had a whole bunch of MNers join us on mounjaro the last time one of these silly threads cropped up.

Get posting your zava codes 💸 💰 😂

daliesque · 17/06/2024 20:28

People with Type 1 diabetes shouldn't be getting screwed over by those that just couldn't put the biscuits down.

They aren't. Wevogy and Mounjaro are not insulin.
GLP-1 drugs are prescribed for type 2 diabetes, not type 1.

But hey, can't argue with stupid.

This couldn’t be more incorrect. Perhaps eat some biscuits, the sugar will help your reading and comprehension skills.

Uncouth is better than scientifically illiterate. Guess why insulin isn’t prescribed for weight loss - it is amongst other things, an energy storage hormone- it facilitates fat deposits. (Oh and the minor detail that giving insulin to a non-diabetic risks hypoglycaemia and death).

Ozempic isn’t licensed as a weight loss treatment in the UK. Only diabetics can be prescribed it by their GP.

You can get a private prescription.

livingwithpmdd · 17/06/2024 22:23

I can’t believe the ignorance and lack of reading going on in this thread. A GP has gone out of their way to explain about obesity and how life changing these drugs are and still the rhetoric is the fatties should stay fat and or not get help to improve their health or even worse ‘just put down the biscuits’. Gee if it was that easy there wouldn’t be an obesity epidemic.

The eat less move more idea has been found to be flawed by countless medical studies and the GP explained that there is an actual set of obesity genes.

Multiple posters have explained that T1D is not treated by the same drugs available to buy for weight loss alone. And the ones that are for diabetes are not sold for weight loss.

Multiple posters have explained these drugs are not insulin.

Multiple posters have explained that you can not get the weight loss versions through a GP or the NHS.

Multiple posters have said lots of drugs have been in a shortage over the last year, some linking it to Brexit.

The being obese is a flaw/ is easy to fix narrative is dangerous. Some people are naturally able to maintain a weight, others aren't.

People being obese also isn’t a simple case of medical or psychological.

Here are some of the myriad reasons…

1.	Some people have chronic health conditions that require medication that makes them gain weight as a side effect.
2.	Some people have past trauma and use food to cope/stay alive.
3.	Some people have ADHD which can increase appetite.
4.	Some people have depression and gain weight as a result of not going out as much or not being able to take care of themselves.
5.	Some people have a compulsive eating disorder.
6.	Some have done years of yo-yo dieting and their leptin and ghrelin signals are not working anymore.
7.	Some have cortisol issues.
8.	Some people turn to food whilst grieving.
9.	Some people are disabled and can’t move as easily.
10.	Some people are peri/menopausal and hormones make it hard to stay the same weight.
11.	Some people have hormonal issues that cause them to gain weight.

I could go on. People become obese for so many reasons, it is not a failing or a simple fix.

Obesity is a disease and has been proven to be in multiple ways. It seems a lot of people don't like this, even though it is classified this way by The World Health Organisation.

One of the main reasons obese people struggle to go to the gym or stick to going to the gym as mentioned by a PP is due to the level of fat shame that is prevalent in society. Being stared at or even talked about is a common thing. And threads like this do not help the feeling obese people feel of being unacceptable in society.

Some of things being posted here are truly offensive and I hope would not be said out loud. If you wouldn’t say it to someone you know, about them then don’t post it. You don’t know who is reading your comment and what impact that might have on them. Let’s stop the hidden fat and blatant shaming, please.

Good post. The thicko fat shamers won't understand any of it unfortunately. Poor things being so brainless. Luckily they don't get a say in whether other people use approved drugs or not. Absolutely nothing to do with them. They may as well give up and find something else to get their knickers in a twist about.

So why are some people that experience severe stress not obese! It’s more down to input output and emotional eating. Some people will overeat to comfort their feelings others will lose their appetite.

Edited

According to my medical team, that is not true. When I went through major trauma, I lost 5kg in two days. Followed by putting on weight which my doctor said was entirely due to stress, not food. The body sometimes does what the body does.

This!

Personally, I used to think I was just weak. I used to think it was my female hormones making me eat or that I must be doing something wrong.
But I've learned so much more now and having been consistently under my calories, eating clean, doing exercise and still gaining weight, I know it is indeed physically possible for your body to work against you. Eat less move more is a load of rubbish for many of us. It simply doesn't work.

I hope that the ignorant people here saying "put down the biscuits" experience it for themselves someday. That's my wish. I used to be able to lose and maintain my weight whenever I liked. Make the intellectually challenged on here see what it's really like. Karma will hopefully come for them.

I so wish we could upvote comments here. This is a wonderful post. Thank you.

I'm so shocked at the ignorant superiority of some posters on this thread. I'm glad none of my friends are so unpleasant.
