It’s June. The sky is constantly grey. It’s raining all the time. Don’t get me started on the wind. I had to put the heating on this morning. God it’s depressing! Is this climate change in action or am I remembering Junes of the past with rose-tinted shades?! I can’t afford a holiday this year and I’m aching for some vitamin D :(

Whether summer begins on 1st or end or June may be debatable, but June is normally warmer than this, it's considerably colder than previous years. I keep seeing Facebook memories pop up of hot days on the beach, park etc

I'm also beginning to think the school shorts I bought for my son were a waste of money , he's had his winter coat on this week, bloody ridiculous! He's never had to wear a winter coat at this time of the year before.

As memory serves, last June was a record breaking Hottest June ever.

I think also 2022 had temp above average for June.. and Terry.

I think most June's I recall have had a few days of nice heat like a weekend or two, but then also pretty chilly and damp and rainy.

I haven't dug through the MetOffice though.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 11/06/2024 21:34

Yes possibly, the wind has made if feel colder than the temperates certainly , plus the dark clouds and lack of sun doesn't help. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed it improves , I'm fed up of wearing my winter clothes.

TattedBarley · 11/06/2024 21:35

I’m just hoping the weather dries up and the sun comes out for the 29th, I’ve got a day festival to attend I’ve been looking forward to for ages and not sure how much I’ll enjoy it in a coat and winter boots!

I will guarantee* that the 29th will be a bright and beautiful lly warm summers day with a high of 26c at around 1pm and very mild, clear and comfortable 20c at 7pm

Hope your festival is fun.

(*This is not a guarantee)

bonzaitree · 11/06/2024 21:38

I was so cold today I considered putting the heating on!

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 11/06/2024 21:41

Wales. Very odd, bright and sunny to begin. Then clouds over, gets cloudy, windy, then a late sunny ending to the day.
Arctic jet stream I read.

Pritas · 11/06/2024 21:42

I have had the heating on all week. Today I got my big coat out that had been washed and put away for summer. It was nice to go out and feel warm.
We've had no spring. It's been winter since last October, it's like bloody Narnia.

alittlehopeisadangerousthing · 11/06/2024 21:42

Let's hope Aslan is on the move soon...

According to many on Twitter it’s because pilots are secretly flying around, spraying stuff to block out the sun. If you’re a sane & rational person, it’s because it’s been a shitty Spring & mostly shitty start to Summer. Here’s hoping there’s some consistent sun & Vit D for you (and us all!) soon ☀️

Say what now 😮🤣🤣🤣

ErrolTheDragon · 11/06/2024 21:48

It's been a nice evening here, I've been gardening for two hours from 7:30 on. Sure I had a light fleece on but it wasn't really cold.

The garden thinks it's summer for sure!

Vicliz24 · 11/06/2024 19:31

I had a Facebook reminder too . Apparently I had the fire on in June 2012 too . That was the year that the summer was just the Olympic weeks . Seriously hope this isn't a repeat of that !!.

June 2012 was cool and wet, like this one.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2012/jul/08/weatherwatch-temperature-rainfall-sunshine

June 2023 was one of the warmest on record.

June 2022 had heatwaves and heat warnings issued.

June 2021 was warmer and dryer than average.

June 2020 was warmer than average but with more rain.

See Met Office data for the above.

We've had a run of warm Junes in recent years. But cooler June months are not impossible and we had them in 2012 and 2007. We can't have warm sunny June weather every year. This year it's the cool and wet weather which is dominating. A shame but we have to take the rough with the smooth and there's fuck all point complaining since the weather won't listen if you did.

Becky Newham MeteoGroup says last month was one of the wettest, coolest, dullest Junes on record

DorisDoesDoncaster · 11/06/2024 21:52

Feel your pain. It’s grim here, but as my folks would say, “great for the grass”.

Mind you, we will all probably be subject to a hosepipe ban next month…

WarriorN · 11/06/2024 21:52

I'm proper fed up.

But it's not unheard of for June to be freezing....

ok, let’s say it’s not summer yet but considering the current situation (11th of June and 13 degrees feels like 12 because of wind) I don’t think we will get to the summery 24 degrees in the next 9 days.
It was bloody freezing in my autumn jacket this morning!

I mean, we can do. The temperature can change quite dramatically in a few days, it doesn't just edge up incrementally. I dislike the cold but I'm a bit tired of all the pessimism on these threads, it will warm up eventually! Longer range forecast says that July will be hotter, and May was very nice.

Thank you, finally a sensible post. I remember 2012 and how dismal it was. Often a cool June is followed by a much much warmer later summer. I would rather have that than a roasting June like last year, followed by a dismal July and August.

WarriorN · 11/06/2024 21:52

When my parents got married (early summer in the 1970s) my mother was searching for white wellingtons because the weather was that bad she was convinced she'd have to wear them to get to church!

I am also hoping for some more summery weather later this year! For now though, it's not quite big coat and scarf weather like many are making out...

buffyslayer · 11/06/2024 22:54

I'm not even a giant heat fan and I'm craving it
We had two hot days and I sat out in the garden despite being a pale redhead! Just soaking it up and want it to be warm enough to sit outside with my coffee on a weekend

Haha! I do love a good walk but there comes a point in the wind and rain, hair stuck to my face and mascara running, where I think oh f*ck this sky high, I wish I could drive! (usually on the 25 minute walk to nursery 🤣)

Haha I hear you. I am on maternity leave at the moment and had imagined lots of sunny walks. I was in my winter coat today with my hood fastened up like Kenny from South Park. Let’s hope the sun comes out soon, the fuc*er!

Lincslady53 · 12/06/2024 05:45

It is sunny in Southern Spain at the moment, although we had a few cooler days last week. We have joked about the weather in June often in the past, one of my favourite paintings is Flaming June, so we have used that phrase ironically to describe the odd wet day in June. Fred Wedlock nailed it in this.

Oh. And I was worried that all the plants I had bought and planted in May would shrivel up while we were away in June, so no worries there. It is the first time we have had 2 weeks away since 1986 due to work demands, so it was a concern.

Saisong · 12/06/2024 05:54

Personally I prefer the cooler temps, but I sympathise with those who are desperate for some heat. This regularly pops up on my yearly Facebook memories - it's from 2016.

To ask where the f*ck the sun is?!
AhBiscuits · 12/06/2024 05:57

I haven't planted various things out at the allotment yet because it's been getting down to 4 degrees overnight and it's too cold for them. I'm thin for the first time in years. I've bought a new summer wardrobe and I can't wear it.
I am fed up of it.

WarriorN · 12/06/2024 06:52

What a lovely story @Flickersy, did she find any?

OhshutupSandra · 12/06/2024 07:32

Still got my heated blanket on the bed and heated throw is being used most days here in Shropshire. I've given up on expecting anything better tbh it is mighty depressing!
