It’s June. The sky is constantly grey. It’s raining all the time. Don’t get me started on the wind. I had to put the heating on this morning. God it’s depressing! Is this climate change in action or am I remembering Junes of the past with rose-tinted shades?! I can’t afford a holiday this year and I’m aching for some vitamin D :(

That is nonsense! It doesn’t suddenly get really cold in 21st December!
most other years are nothing like this actually…

I thought

March April May = spring
June July August = summer
september October November = autumn
December January February = winter

?!?!?!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/06/2024 18:58

On 10th June 1992, I was bringing my first born home from hospital. The rain was monsoon-like, and lots of roads were closed due to flooding. I think some people have a touch of euphoric recall, whereby June is always hot (hotter than the average for June in the UK, which isn't that hot) and sunny 😂

Yes that’s what I thought too! High teens/low twenties is what I remember as the norm for this time of year, it’s looking more like April out there for us.

For some reason, this year, people seem to think June is Summer.

It isn't summer yet. Summer isn't until the 20th June. The longest day. The Solstice the day when the northern hemisphere is actually tilted towards the sun.

You've got 9 days. Then summer will start.
July August summer ends Autumn Equinox in September.

ok, let’s say it’s not summer yet but considering the current situation (11th of June and 13 degrees feels like 12 because of wind) I don’t think we will get to the summery 24 degrees in the next 9 days.
It was bloody freezing in my autumn jacket this morning!

And yet it suddenly gets hot in June and cold on December 1st?

🤣

There's been seasons long before we had months.

Oh wow that sounds like a bit of a nightmare! Although I’m not sure if I’d have preferred a monsoon when I had DD (17th July 22). It was 41 degrees and I’d just had an emergency section 🤢

Er, have you never heard of Midsummers Day?Grin

Mind you, that's ridiculous in the U.K. - it's midsummer in terms of day length (possibly why it's more of a thing in Nordic countries) but weather wise there is a lag - in our maritime climate I guess the sea needs to warm up but then it keeps us a bit warmer into autumn.

Seasons are created by the earth's tilt and place in the orbit around the sun. That gives us the Solstices and equinox etc.

Months were invented by humans and have changed over time.

The meteorologists divided the current calendar into 4 equal sections to measure average temps etc. they decided June - July - August would be summer in the northern hemisphere.

I was always taught that end June to mid sept was summer.
It seems I will die alone on this hill.. that's ok

I stand with Observable and measured.. 🤪

buffyslayer · 11/06/2024 19:09

Not even high temps... I would settle for 20c no wind or rain so I can wear a t shirt! My heating keeps kicking in

gojumpjump · 11/06/2024 19:12

I also agree summer doesn't start until 31st June! Always being taught that

Yes! I’ve made that observation a tedious number of times this week. It’s April weather/all over the place

I have.

June 24th this year.

Celebrating the Summer Solstice.
And has nothing to do with a very long 'horror' film from several years ago...

🤣

Im
not saying you’re wrong, im just not sure my brain can cope if the 12 months aren’t divided into 4 even, 3 month seasons

Thomasina79 · 11/06/2024 19:14

Freezing in london. It’s the first time I have put on thermals in summer.

Petrine · 11/06/2024 19:17

South east cold and windy with patches of sun then heavy rain.

Oneearringlost · 11/06/2024 19:18

It's grim, isn't it?
I had the heating on today, and went out, into town in jeans, jumper, socks, boots and coat!

Oneearringlost · 11/06/2024 19:18

And I'm in the SW.

Patagonia21 · 11/06/2024 19:18

Cold and rainy in Southbourne and forecast to be the same for the next two months at least. The jet stream has moved.

Towerofsong · 11/06/2024 19:22

A Facebook memory came up yesterday from 2012 - I was complaining about the cold wet weather.

I also remember there being hailstones in June in around 2015.....I think we just live in hope every year. Occasionally we get a nice Easter or spring - like in March /April 2020....and then we seize on that as being 'the norm'.

That's partly why they did it

The meteorologists had to allow for the orbit of the earth not being exact. They needed data to be measurable and repeatable etc.
with it being an even split of 4 - 3 month seasons, they can average it out easier.

But, the earth don't care what some science dude said a thousand years ago. The sun passes over the equator when it damn well pleases.. some years it's the 20th June, other years it's the 21st.. 🤣🤣

Whatever the case, fingers crossed that after 20th it'll start warming up for all the heat lovers.

I think heat wave a couple years back was August so there's plenty of time.

There's quite a good explanation of the different conventions here.

Hailstones in summer aren't unusual.

Once during the 70s we had a bit of snow one June ...on the Essex coast not up a Scottish mountain!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/06/2024 19:26

I've just watched the Met Office Deep Dive video on YouTube. 2015 was a cold June, too. I remember lots of cool and rainy June/July/August days.

According to many on Twitter it’s because pilots are secretly flying around, spraying stuff to block out the sun. If you’re a sane & rational person, it’s because it’s been a shitty Spring & mostly shitty start to Summer. Here’s hoping there’s some consistent sun & Vit D for you (and us all!) soon ☀️

I've been listening to this all day, too. I was even shown flightpaths to 'prove' they are poisoning us on purpose. My comment that 'they' are poisoning themselves too didn't go down well. (apparently, they are immune🤔)
