I'm wondering if it was the underside of his ball sack. As the owner of one, they can also get a bit pungent after a long day. And if DP asked me how I'd feel if she stuck her hand down her knickers and then asked me to smell her fingers, the answer probably would be "aroused" (I'm male, I know we're a bit grim, but DP doing that would probably be the most overtly sexual thing she's ever done)
