What do you mean by "that sort of place"?

What do you mean by "that sort of place"?

https://citypopulation.de/en/uk/eastofengland/essex/E63004300__clacton_on_sea/

Overwhelmingly white
Very few young people
A lot of people who've never worked
A lot of economically inactive people
High levels of social deprivation
Hardly any ethnic minority or stated religion other than Christian
Relatively high crime rate
High proportion of leave voters
Returned Carswell as a UKIP MP

If Farage is likely to be successful anywhere this is prime Reform territory.

@ilovesooty

So one of the Left Behind areas, with high levels of deprivation and, presumably due to the low numbers of young people, lack of job opportunity.

People who've been failed and let down by both Labour and the Conservatives. Is it any wonder if they might turn to another party?

Whether or not Reform is the answer is irrelevant. The point is that had either Labour or the Tories addressed the legitimate concerns and struggles of people there, then they wouldn't feel the need to look elsewhere.

Dymaxion · 16/06/2024 21:21

I suspect there will be an increasing move to the right as the impact of climate change becomes more and more apparent - including increased migration.

I think you have a point, given how shit the weather has been for the last 9 months, I see an exodus from this fair and pleasant Land !

It’s a warning. Europe is heading towards the far right and it is a possibility we will sooner rather than later.

We are usually pretty centrist in the UK, who ever is in power. The far right prosper when people feel disenfranchised and poor. The Tory government have kicked that off however; Labour don’t have the money to fix all the things which are making people feel poor.

We need immigration, we have an ageing population. We need to keep the skills we have as we don’t have enough in certain areas.

People feel angry that they are over taxed. They are.
People feel angry about immigration but we need immigration.
People feel angry about sex based rights being taken away from them.
People feel angry that we aren’t competitive globally in the skills market.
People feel angry they don’t get enough help from the state but it’s the highest on record.

All of this is a cooking pot of disaster. What is not helping is that people aren’t listening. The far left have created a bit of an echo chamber as can often be seen on mumsnet. Slurs, abuse and similar for sharing those thoughts. The only one that people don’t is for expecting more from the state. Often congratulated by the far left. How very socialist.

It is these echo chambers and the inability to listen to people’s worries, often borne out of fear and misrepresentation, that is causing the lurch to far right parties. People often being called far right scum just because they don’t feel like they can vote for the Labour Party. Many, many people don’t feel like they can vote for anyone.

I fear it will get worse when Labour - nor can any party - deliver the land of milk and honey so promised. People will feel powerless and they will take it out on anyone. At the moment it is the higher earners who we need. Once they’ve gone and been obliterated who to target next. It will be a quick realisation that taxing people into oblivion won’t work. Who is next? The immigrants we very much need.

People and parties need to listen to what people are saying without abuse if they don’t want the far right to take hold. It is history repeating itself. The simplistic view that reform voters are racist isn’t helping. It’s actively driving people to these parties. People should read some history books.

Excellent post. Agree with every word.

I'm not expecting a golden elephant.

And despite your sneering, the incoming government will have a heck of a mess to address.

And no doubt that's what they'll be singing every time they fail to deliver.
In fact, you've already started and they're not in yet!

newnamethanks · 17/06/2024 07:31

Wrong. We won't be singing about the lack of golden elephants. We will definitely be referring to the unmentionable and appalling failure that is Brexit though, and those we have to thank for it.

"Singing"? More sneering.

I was stating a fact. I'm sorry that you appear to have a problem with that.

Saddlesore · 17/06/2024 09:30

Apologies is this has been mentioned upthread already...

But do Reform voters realise that Reform is not actually a political party? It's a company, and the main shareholder is.... guess who.

So much for democracy, eh?

You can read about it here.
Why Nigel Farage’s Reform is a company and not a party - and what that means (msn.com)

Abhannmor · 17/06/2024 10:07

Leaving the actual politics out of it - if you vote for a private company and they are elected , are you still a citizen or have you just become a customer?

newnamethanks · 17/06/2024 10:15

Customer eh? And subject to Trading Standards? That could be interesting. Do hope, when it's not quite the success they're punting for, that it doesn't go bankrupt leaving loads of debt. That would be terrible.

The pedant in me says neither: you are a subject. As are all born into a monarchy. Call it what you like - you are and never will be an equal.

SerendipityJane · 18/06/2024 09:23

But do Reform voters realise

I think there are an awful lot of things Reform voters are unaware of, being frank.

I agree, the Head of State is not a politician (or CEO, etc) but the monarch

TheThingIsYeah · 08/06/2024 17:27

Why are you scared, hun?

Do you need a lie down?

Do you think she doesn't need to be scared because you've assumed she's white?

Collywobblewobbles · 18/06/2024 17:18

And by linguistic deduction, the population subjects.

"Citizens" (Citoyens 😀) presupposes we are all equal. And we are not.

Rosejasmine · 18/06/2024 17:51

What confuses me is that support for this right wing group will give Labour an even bigger majority. Is that what they actually want? They’re not the brightest are they

Yes, it is what they want.

Farage wants to emulate other people in history who crowbarred their way into the mainstream.

There is an allusion to corners, mice and squeaking that some may get.

Ultimate tribute would be to throw Farage in jail for an attempted coup in a Wetherspoons.

AnthuriumCrystallinum · 18/06/2024 18:32

Oops, posted too soon...

Perhaps the plan is to make the Tory's unelectable without either him or his party's support.

wastingtimeonhere · 18/06/2024 20:43

The 'reform' fan at work has fallen for the 'he speaks for the man on the street' line Farage cultivates. He thinks that if Tories usual voters all vote Reform, they will get in...there is no convincing him.

What are you twittering on about? Where does the colour of her (or his) skin come into it?

Buryyiirwhat · 19/06/2024 21:36

Nonsensical ‘policies’ - just check list of what the right wing nutters who look back in the 1950s as an idyllic time want …

Man in the street? Is that why he dresses like he got lost from a grouse shoot?
