To happily pay an extra £2000 per year to....

Fatcish · 07/06/2024 20:04

  • see a GP f2f without a wait of 4 weeks and efficient onward referral as needed to sort the issue
  • have my children taught by subject teachers and supported by TAs
  • drive my car without hitting numerous potholes and missing road markings
  • enable my elderly disabled neighbour to have more care at home (1 hour a week at the moment)
  • ensure my son doesn't languish on the CAMHS waiting list for two years getting more and more broken
  • pay public sector workers properly so they are not run ragged covering endless vacancies and schools and hospitals are viewed as aspirational and supportive places to work
  • support government led, empowered oversight bodies of our water, rivers, trains and buses
  • help the MNs on here with heart breaking experiences of seeking support with their SEN children

And on and on...all for £2k a year per FAMILY. I assume I will pay more as a higher earner. FINE. let's make it fair not equal.

Yes. Yes I would

justanotherlaura · 07/06/2024 20:08

I 100% agree but do note that that £2k figure is over 4 years not every year and the figures are apparently made up too but I do agree with the sentiment!

Whitesapphire · 07/06/2024 20:09

Speak for yourself, I already pay a huge amount of tax. Countless people are not paying any income tax at all. It’s those who need to start paying in so we can have better public services.

GodzillaAttacks · 07/06/2024 20:11

But it wouldn't happen.

They'd take the money and not do it.

Look at all the tax money they've squandered over the years, that could have fixed any number of those things.

You're making the assumption they actually care about the general public. They care about keeping their own wages

onlyconnect · 07/06/2024 20:11

Isn't the figure mentioned over 5 years for a "family"? If that's two tax payers it's £200 per year each.
Absolutely I would.
What a shame it's not true.

A very good point and my worry too hence I didn't mention supporting labour. Just want these things fixed!

Apologies if I have overstated the £2k. But if it's less even better!

LiterallyOnFire · 07/06/2024 20:14

Me too.

Is this Labour policy? (Sorry I've been slacking.) Is it fully costed? Sounds like a bargain if doable, TBH.

MumofCandR · 07/06/2024 20:14

Yes I would - except the prime minister mislead the public (lied) and the figure is £2000 over 4 years, so only £500 per year. Even more reason to support this approach - absolutely great value. To those who say you pay too much tax - you do realise if you wanted to contribute privately for a similar level of private health cover this would be 10s of £1000 per year... And that's without all the other public services everyone uses. Most people are not net contributors but buy the Torry lies that tax is too high- which it is for lower earners due to fiscal drag created by freezing the personal allowance - another conservative policy, 👏.

It’s per household I think but not sure 🤔 I’ve seen both “families” and “households” used . I wish they would use more accurate, and frankly more inclusive, language and stick to “households” .

Many households are one person incomes whether that’s because it’s one person living alone or just one person working.

agree with pp I worry the tax will rise then the changes still won’t be made. If the changes would be made of course I’d be all for it. Also I think they need to go after the ones that should be paying tax but aren’t.

Who has promised these and will they actually be delivered?

hattie43 · 07/06/2024 20:16

You've got no way of knowing that £2k will go on any of that .

BrightLightTonight · 07/06/2024 20:18

No - I pay enough in taxes.

If wastrel dad’s were made to pay a proper maintenance for their offsprings, that would reduce the benefit budget by far more than taxing people who are already overpaying tax.

If people who refuse to work, rather than can’t work, were made accountable, that again would reduce the benefit budget by far more than taxing people who are already overpaying tax.

If companies like Amazon were forced to pay the correct amount of tax, once again that would reduce the tax burden on all tax payers.

Labours idea of making PAYE employees pay more in tax is a sign of their lazy attitudes to the people

TheGoogleMum · 07/06/2024 20:19

Sounds good to me but in fairness I'm one of the hospital workers

insidenumber9 · 07/06/2024 20:20

Completely agree! If it visibly made the country better I wouldn’t mind paying. The tories keep taxes low but claw back the money via stealth.

fernz · 07/06/2024 20:22

I'm a single income household and already barely earning enough (and not eligible for any help whatsoever) so no, I couldn't cope with paying any more tax.

DoreenonTill8 · 07/06/2024 20:23

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 07/06/2024 20:14

Agree, all of that for only 2k? Or do they mean 2k for every household in the UK, so of course there'll be the households who don't contribute for whatever reason and their contributions going to get spread out to be expected from others?

PracticeorPractise · 07/06/2024 20:24

Well, yes.

But let's face it - this ain't gonna happen.

Is this some sort of insurance if so what?

TheBanffie · 07/06/2024 20:27

So how many people are paying this extra 2K a year? Sounds like it wouldn't even touch the sides of that wish list! One full time GP will be best part of £100K a year (for 40 hours a week and as most GPs do long days that'll probably be 4 x 10 hour days a week) - so 50 tax payers worth for 1 GP.

Fatcish · 07/06/2024 20:27

PracticeorPractise · 07/06/2024 20:24

Sad. But true. But I'd vote for it.

You have been paying high tax for years - so what’s changed?

It’s not about money is it?

Whitesapphire · 07/06/2024 20:09

You can't pay income tax if you aren't working or have pensionable income over the tax threshold.

Or do you expect my 5 year old child or her 11 year old cousin to pay income tax?

beckybarefoot · 07/06/2024 20:29

ah and those who do not pay tax... do they continue as they are? so segregation by financial worth?

it will never happen... oh they will take the money, ofcourse they will.. but the changes will never happen, because those at the top will take their cut, then their second in command will take theirs.. and so on and so on and when it gets right at the bottom with the people who actually do the work... well basically their money pay check will be lower, cos they've paid more tax and they still cant get their f2f appointment with the GP

Exactly.

I already pay 45% income tax to the Scottish government and about £3000 a year on top of that to the US Government as a dual citizen. I don’t even work there.

The rest of my earnings seems to go on various other taxes, it just astounds me.

That should be enough. I don’t want to pay a penny more for anything, thanks.
