  • see a GP f2f without a wait of 4 weeks and efficient onward referral as needed to sort the issue
  • have my children taught by subject teachers and supported by TAs
  • drive my car without hitting numerous potholes and missing road markings
  • enable my elderly disabled neighbour to have more care at home (1 hour a week at the moment)
  • ensure my son doesn't languish on the CAMHS waiting list for two years getting more and more broken
  • pay public sector workers properly so they are not run ragged covering endless vacancies and schools and hospitals are viewed as aspirational and supportive places to work
  • support government led, empowered oversight bodies of our water, rivers, trains and buses
  • help the MNs on here with heart breaking experiences of seeking support with their SEN children

And on and on...all for £2k a year per FAMILY. I assume I will pay more as a higher earner. FINE. let's make it fair not equal.

I love comments like these. I have worked in finance and trust me, the wealthy people are just as bad, if not worse at not paying tax 😁

Indeed. Just pillaging the tax relief system in most cases!

If you have £2000 spare then why the heck is your son languishing on the CAMHS waiting list for two years getting more and more broken?

Why do you not tap into the local mental health services urgently and find some charities to help him? Use your cash to help your child.
Your duty is to your child, not being holier than though. Nobody is going to believe it. 2 years in a child’s life is a huge amount of time and he will never get this time back!

I agree with this and also wondered. Why not spend the money on private therapy?

That's is what I meant @Lifesucks2024 .

@AnnieSF - you're wrong, people do have a choice, there is a myriad of things people can do to reduce the tax they pay:

  • reduce their hours
  • stop work altogether
  • pay more into their pension
  • move overseas

There is a thread on exactly this.

Frankly I think a lot of people think they pay too much tax anyway, esp when you see how it's squandered.

People will tighten their belts and that's not good for the economy and growth,

I agree with number 3 but the first two are like cutting off your nose. As for number 4 what is the reality of people who don't have much to start with being able to do this? Most people are going to have to suck it up unless they can work around it with various tax dodges. Those are the very people who 2000 means very little to start with. As you say it all cuts down the actual spending in the country. Labour are talking about cutting the Lifetime Tax Allowance but to let it stand for certain professions. How could that even be?

The NHS needs a major overhaul not more money. Far too much money spent needlessly

But will we get all these things or will it be a lot of taxes and little in return

It's too late to rectify our education system. The damage has been done and is now irreparable.

No it isn't.

Kids are being born every day.

When I started secondary school you could still do O levels and CSEs however I did GCSEs.

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 31/10/2024 19:19

@Reugny I've been a primary teacher for over 20 years. The recruitment and retention crisis is never going to get better, especially now you don't have to have a degree to be a teacher (they're known as unqualified teachers/cover supervisors).
