Yes I know, another XL bulky thread. But seriously, this breed is like a mine field, randomly killing owners all over. You never know when/where it will happen next.

I truly can't wrap my head around people like this woman - may she rest in peace - who are all over the internet defending these KILLERS. They all think theirs is different, theirs would never kill, theirs is a big softy.

Is it time to do something more serious? The legislation brought in doesn't seem to have stopped deaths, although at least it does appear to be the owners (who are stupid enough to keep them) who are dying now instead of innocent members of the public.

XL Bully owner was celebrating birthday when she was mauled to death - as videos emerge of her defending breed

An XL Bully owner killed by her dog had just come home from celebrating her birthday when she was mauled to death.

Bit tasteless to post photos of large, aggressive breeds looking for admiration on a thread about people dying because of aggressive breeds.

I am not looking for admiration, my dog does not look like the ones people typically think look terrifying as he is not cropped in any way shape or form, nor is he aggressive. He is often mistaken for a large lab!
I would hate to offend anyone so admin, if you think my picture is in poor taste, please delete it.

Thanks

I would be scared of him if I saw him. Sorry @Furrydogmum but that's the truth of it.

I think the "furrydogmum" username tells you all you need to know about the attitudes of that poster about her lovable soft as butter wouldn't touch a fly just a big softie nanny dog and definitely not a threat animal.

I mean, anyone who thinks they are the "mum" to an animal is a bit lacking in critical thinking skills.

Yep, my thoughts exactly!
Furthermore, having an animal like that as a pet is a way of positioning yourself at the top of the dog owner hierarchy. A way of signalling that you have specialist & high calibre dog owning abilities and therefore have a high calibre dog requiring specialist dog owner abilities.
Just like road man and blow up doll!

Gonna be honest, I do like a fairly big dog.

I am also very emotionally attached to my dogs. However, no I would not put them above another human beings life, if it came down to it.

But honestly, the Presa Canario is a fairly rare breed in the Uk. But I would my allow my kids to be in the same house with one.

Many countries have had similar problems with this breed that we have with XL bullies. Certain states in the US have them banned Australia does do. Like the XL bully the PC was responsible for a huge amount of dogs attacks in the US (and I think Canada) despite not being a popular breed. Also has a history of being bred for fighting.

But it’s also a huge dog bred for protecting livestock. If the PP has a farm in a country with large predators, then that breed would make sense, though.

I think once XL bulky numbers drop the Caucasian Shepherd will be one of the next big breeds people get that will become aggressive. Livestock guardian dog, very territorial and should live with the flock. I can see them becoming more popular on social media already.

While I support the ban on XL bullies I think more needs to be done about irresponsible and/cruel dog owners.

Itsonlymashadow · 18/06/2024 19:00

Also my daughter was the victim of a dog attack. The dog (owned by a relative) had her head in its mouth. She was only 9. I had my toddler ds in my arms and was scared the dog would kill him if I put him down. My (now ex) H kicked the dog in the ribs and it ran off. Plenty of dog breeds wouldn’t have. Luckily dd was only bruised on her head, but there was a hole that needed to be glued where her ear meets her scalp.

My kids never went in that house again. It’s absolutely terrifying, she wouldn’t have survived had it have been an XL bully or similar types of dogs.

And another. Not fatal but 73 year old woman mauled.

@Itsonlymashadow
Thank you for filling us in on the situation with the Presa Canario. Any 'furmummy/furdaddy' with one of these knows full well that they are a dangerous breed.
The publicity around pitbull type dogs will have given certain dog devotees an appetite for the feeling of power that they get when others are terrified of your dog. Your prediction that comparable breeds will grow in popularity is sadly likely to be right🙁
I'm so sorry about the attack suffered by your daughter🙏

Thanks for linking to this. According to the report:
'The 73-year-old was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The dog, an XL Bully is believed to have been living at the woman’s address at the time of the attack. The dog was put to sleep, while another dog also believed to be an XL Bully was taken into secure kennels.'
Sounds as if the woman who was attacked was living with that dog and another of the same type.

Thanks @Itsonlymashadow, I looked up Caucasian shepherds, they're like bears! Yikes. Coming soon to a park near me I guess.

Not your stereotypical owner... I wonder if she was convinced to take them by someone :(

beergiggles · 18/06/2024 23:20

@HeadacheEarthquake I also wondered that, maybe she was hiding/protecting them for someone?

It’s not problem. I find the history of dogs really fascinating. How it impacts behaviour, looks, breed traits etc. whether things are genetic and/or environmental.

I actually got interested in it looking into the incorrectly named ‘cocker rage’ about 25 years ago when I was looking to get my first dog as an adult.

I grew up with chihuahuas, who were all fantastic. Not snappy, not aggressive, well behaved dogs. So ending up spending far too much time looking into why we had great ones when so many are awful and it’s grown from there. It’s a bit of a hobby for me.

Owning an XL bully is like having a tiger in the house, WHAT is the fascination with them?

There was reference to the dog’s owner as a separate person in news articles - presumably her son’s/grandson’s dog?

I thought that that it was her own dog but it says the owner has been spoken to.I wonder if she was a visiting grandmother or something.

Unfortunately propaganda by the pit bull lobby has convinced people they are just misunderstood big goof balls…..until they snap. Then everyone tries to blame the owner.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 19/06/2024 10:40

I agree the history of dogs and their various jobs is fascinating. What I don't understand is how people can choose a breed on looks, it's ridiculous. My aunt had a samoyd (sp?) and never walked her!! Her father bred hunting dogs too so she was well aware that dogs had specific functions Confused

Unfortunately owning a dog is seen as a right not a privilege and the government is too dysfunctional to do anything about anything so I don't see it changing soon.

It’s funny you should say that.

Mum was briefly married to a man (talking 9 month marriage) who came home with a Samoyed puppy. He was gorgeous but mum hit the roof. Mums husband decided he was going to build a kennel outside taking up all small the garden. We had the dog about 3 months before mum spoke to a Samoyed rescue and had him rehomed to someone who had a lot of land and already owned one.

Her husband didn’t walk it, didn’t train it or anything. Maybe that’s where my interest started. We were kids and mom explained it was a dog that could live in a small 3 bed semi with small garden and not be walked and how different dogs need different environments. We were kids at the time and upset. But it made sense and we were happier that he would have a better life.

Not surprisingly she also ended the marriage shortly after.

The fascination is exactly what you have said in your post.
Ie, they like to think of themselves as someone who can control a tiger and they enjoy the fact that others are terrified of them and their 'tiger'.

The child's obvious fear and distress is really hard to listen to.

What a **t that dog owner is. The dog looks deranged frankly, you can see it straining against the owners hold even after the leash is back on. It cares not one whit for it's owner's voice or recall.

Needs to be put down. It's lucky the horse didn't give it a kick or it would have been over.

LooneyLiberalSpaceWaster · 19/06/2024 14:56

"I'm videoing it, don't you worry"

yep, got the phone out to record the event, instead of doing anything useful. And now making a huge public fuss about it.

Thankfully no one was hurt, and horses and dogs unscathed too. The dog could so easily have been kicked in the head, the riders thrown off, or the man trampled or kicked. Yes he's a nob, yes it was a dangerous situation, yes the dog should be trained, and if its an XL on lead and muzzled at all times. But, this could have been any breed of dog that is poorly trained, or young and still learning. It's doubtful that even the most stupid chav Xl dog owner would let their dog bother horses and let their dog off lead with any intention of causing this situation.

And if the child was so scared the adult filming should have put away their phone and dealt with the child and their horse. But no, it's all about the spectacle, the opinions, the likes, the attention. Pathetic.
