Is this colder than most ‘junes’? So miserable

No money to go abroad. No money to put heating on. Struggling to afford indoor activities for dd and just wanted some time outdoors in the sun. It feels like this is the coldest June I can remember? I also don’t get how this fits with global warming… though I expect I am missing how that works? Just so fed up of being cold, for literally nearly a year now!

Put yourselves in jumpers and coats and go for a walk/play in thee park

I fail to understand why people do not see walking as acceptable when it's cold

Some of us struggle with the cold. I have Raynaud's and feel it way more.

It has felt very cold. We had snow and hail here on Tuesday (Scotland).

Ooh where are you, I’ve just been singing the praises of sunny Scottish weather ! I’m central between Edinburgh/ Glasgow.

WithACatLikeTread · 07/06/2024 14:06

I wouldn't mind being able to hang my washing out

A slight reminder that whilst it might be sunny in the south of England the North is most certainly not! Watching a school performance in jumper and coat.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2024 14:06

It isn't like that everywhere in the UK @Sahara123. This is why there has been an unusually high number of threads on MN about the cold and wet weather that most of us are having.

It's been rubbish in South Yorkshire where I live. We have had 9 cm more rainfall in May than usual, for example.

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

you might wanna go to doctors about that

it’s really not normal to be hot all day following just 30 mins of exercise

If you do it every day it improves your circulation so yes it can do

Sharptonguedwoman · 07/06/2024 12:46

Ooh, thanks. I'm a few years out of the game and not kept up with modelling techniques. I didn't know about the cherry picked weather stations either or the satellite data lack of conformity. Do you have a good link? Sounds as if I need to do some reading.

I have been very interested in this for quite some time. I was at university when the global warming narrative (since rebranded as 'climate change' to cover all bases) was first coming to the fore - it was very lacking then (but I along with many other student environmentalists at the time lapped it up because it seemed to fit in with an anti-establishment, 'green' narrative!). Now it has become the mainstream narrative that is endorsed by the 'establishment' - anybody who tries to argue that the science is far more complicated, and certainly not 'settled' is automatically cancelled - anyone remember David Bellamy? https://www.palatinate.org.uk/tributes-paid-to-naturalist-and-ex-durham-academic-david-bellamy/
Anyway, I am aware that there is a great deal of disquiet in the USA about the inadequacy of their terrestrial temperature record, and I am personally aware that the UK Met Office has markedly decreased the number of official weather stations in recent years https://wow.metoffice.gov.uk/. There is an interesting article here https://dailysceptic.org/2024/03/04/met-office-must-account-for-the-junk-temperature-data-propping-up-net-zero-insanity/
What really infuriates me is the fact that any open scientific debate has been all but completely shut down. It is an absolute nonsense to believe that the science on this matter is comprehensively understood and 'settled', or that dismantling our economy as we race too quickly for 'net zero' will not be the cure that is worse than the apparent disease! If the principal climatic drivers turn out not to be focused on carbon dioxide (and I don't think that will ever be readily admitted, even if it is true) then we are fools not to be focusing instead on making our society resilient to the sort of shocks that will result from extreme weather events in the future (changing climate will continue to exert significant impact, as it always has done, regardless of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels).
I am currently coming to the end of my lunch break - but I will try to find some links to some of the key scientists who have been trying to highlight the issues with climate science at some point over the weekend (credible scientists, including a noble prize winning physicist!).
However, it is important to note that the propaganda machine is now in full swing - and search engines like Google are very efficient at burying sources that don't comply with the current paradigm (and prioritising results for sites that attempt to discredit critical material - the ludicrously scientifically weak 'DeSmog' blog springs to mind!).

I live in Plymouth and it's been nowhere near 24 degrees, the highest was last weekend around 22 and all this week has been 16 with temp dropping dramatically in the evening - where do you live??

Agree - we're just back from a mini break in Plymouth. The weather was bizarre - in the mornings we were dressed in jeans, shirt, jumper, anorak. Freezing wind and grey. Then at around lunchtime the sun came out and it was glorious, so off came the jumpers etc, lovely to feel hot sun on bare skin, really felt like summer. Throughout the afternoon it kept changing from hot to cold as the clouds passed over. Both nights were very chilly though.

Rewis · 07/06/2024 14:14

It has been so weird. I've been in the nordics visiting family for a while and it has been so hot for several weeks. Then I call my partner in the UK and it has been so cold. It has usually been the other way around or at least similar. Coming back next week. Might need to book a holiday for later if it doesn't get better 😅

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway

i was merely querying the temperature. I’m not trying to re do my GCSEs. Allow me a sweeping statement that it’s bloody cold for June 😬

LOL fair enough, sorry. 😆

As they say though, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing

Please stop repeating this trope. It's getting boring. Wearing warm clothes still doesn't make the ambient temperature warmer. I love spending time outdoors, and am about to do some gardening. In warmer weather I would like to sit in my garden and enjoy the fruits of my labours, instead of looking at it through the window.

What don't you get about people wanting warmer weather and being able to wear fewer clothes, no socks etc?

What you want doesn't figure. The weather doesn't care.

The weather isn't going to adapt to you, so you have to adapt to it. That's the reality.

@PiranhaPeaches

that may be true but it’s still shit weather and people are allowed to say as such.

JasonTindallsTan · 07/06/2024 14:29

It’s absolutely baltic. 12 degrees and windy here today. Rarely been above 15, pretty sure it’s not hit the 20’s at all yet this year. It has rained for what feels like 9 months. I’m cold and I’m damp and I’m sick of doing dog walks in the mud and wellies and needing copious towels to dry us both off when we come in.

Im also sick of gleeful ‘oh I love it like this, I hate it when it’s too hot’ type sentiments. When you get your ‘preferred way’ weather wise for around 10 months of the year if not more, have the good Grace to at least try and empathise with those of us who really struggle with the shitty low temps and gloomy clouds and biting wind and live for those Occasional warm and sunny Days. Also people who clearly live in areas where the climate is slightly more temperate eg - not the Fucking frozen north - who seem to be determined to not understand that everyone doesn’t have the same weather, you can bore off too.

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/06/2024 14:33

I don’t wanna wear jumpers

OhmygodDont · 07/06/2024 14:35

It’s June. It should be warmer than it is.

I shouldn’t need to wear jumps and hoody’s just to be able to sit inside my house.

yay it’s not too hot humbugs… it’s horrible most of the year 🙄

mydogisthebest · 07/06/2024 14:36

Wonderfulstuff · 07/06/2024 10:25

I think the average has been in the 20s so statistically normal. But I think as it has been so wet that everywhere just feels damp. If we could just have a few more dry days it would feel a lot better.

I am in the East Midlands and not been in the 20's here. 16 today, 17 forecast for tomorrow and then 14 for the next few days. Oh and rain most of the days too!

Absolutely shit weather and has been since last June

WickerMam · 07/06/2024 14:39

exiledfromcornwall · 07/06/2024 12:40

I do remember one June when the weather was dire. That was 2012. I remember it so well because we had to go down to Cornwall for upsetting family reasons and it was cold and stormy, more like March than June. Also that was the year of the Diamond Jubilee and I remember the weather being awful for the boat procession on the Thames. I think the Duke of Edinburgh caught a nasty chill because of it.

That said, this one hasn't been much better so far.

I remember that - I was in holiday in Scotland at the end of June, and it didn't get above 11c the whole time. It was definitely 2012, as we were passed by the Olympic torch.

There have been nice days so far this year. I wore a skirt once, and did a trip to the beach three weeks ago. I haven't wore my winter coat since the start of May.

My heating - set to 15c - has clicked on a few times this week though.

bilgewater · 07/06/2024 14:40

Yep, it's rubbish, and so was last summer. There was a bit of sun in London this morning so I foolishly put on a dress. Now sitting inside with a huge jumper over the top.

TheyAllFloatDownHere · 07/06/2024 14:43

I don't mind it so much for me, but what is driving me mad is STILL having to use the tumble dryer to get clothes properly dry and that everything I am trying to grow at the allotment is at risk of failing if the nights don't bloody well warm up.

5c overnight in June is a death sentence to many summer veg and plants if it happens regularly over a period. They need consistently 10c+ to thrive.

I know . I’m just trying to defend Scotland as most people assume it’s permanently awful here !
There was a poster who claimed it was so dark in Scotland currently, which I found strange as it’s still properly light at 10.30 pm , and light again by 4.30am !

Yup I’m sure all cold lovers won’t be loving it so much when food prices rocket because crops failed.

All mine are so so so far behind where they should be.

Ghosttofu99 · 07/06/2024 15:42

It’s roasting down here. (south coast)

Past few Junes have been unusual heatwaves followed by washout summers. When I was a kid July/August used to be the hotter months.

Printspped · 07/06/2024 15:43

i bought some garden furniture last year. The covers have been off 3 days this year so far. Abysmal weather and at the moment like you say, freezing for the time of year. We don’t half get shit weather here.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2024 15:44

How "roasting" is it @Ghosttofu99 ?
