Is this colder than most ‘junes’? So miserable

No money to go abroad. No money to put heating on. Struggling to afford indoor activities for dd and just wanted some time outdoors in the sun. It feels like this is the coldest June I can remember? I also don’t get how this fits with global warming… though I expect I am missing how that works? Just so fed up of being cold, for literally nearly a year now!

It has been a bit chilly. I think actually all the seasons have pushed back by about 6 weeks, so whilst we traditionally expect it to be summer now, I think we'll get it later and it pushes on into October and early Nov before it goes cold. Out of kilter with light levels and plants though.

You really think out usernames are actually required to be perfect? Mostly, names are jokey. Do you really think I misspelt that accidentally?
Bon journee

I don’t really understand what you are trying to say. But as you asked me a question and then were sarcastic about the length of the clarification and didn’t address the content, I suspect you are unable to have a debate or discussion so I shall no longer engage. Waste of my time.

I keep having memories pop up from 4 years ago with me with a lovely sun tan, looking back Lockdown had lovely weather.

This year has been very wet and grey. So even it's warmer it's not been as nice.

Oblomov24 · 09/06/2024 08:13

I'm so fed up with the weather. Generally. this is June, what is going on?

went down to Dorset for our May bank holiday week last week. Often it's boiling. It was really miserable a lot of the time and it actually got me quite down one day.

even now my husband is in Portugal with the boys. it's not even that sunny, and it's warm'ish, 17 or 21, when it shouldn't be anything like that, it should be a lot warmer than that.

Last summer there wasn't even a summer. The last decent summer was in Covid.

For years in the 90's and 2000'd they warned us, don't buy another Tesco plastic bag, global warming - it's going to get boiling. Really? It hasn't.

seasons are all blending into one. and it just seems to be constant drizzle grey and rain, and yet the same time other times we are told it's hardly raining at all. There's not enough rain for the water companies.

But the hotter temperatures suggested we'd get years ago, we aren't.

but it feels like it's just one big bleugh.

I find it sole destroying. It actually makes me miserable.

Why would you misspell it on purpose?

Some poorer countries are experiencing intolerable heat and people are dying. I think many would argue that we have got the easier end of the climate change stick. Our temperate climate means that for now, our weather is miserable but not life-threatening.

Though of course the impact on farmers and crops is very worrying and often gets left out of discussions like this.

I agree. The summer haters have been gloating about the current weather and how much they have been enjoying how "snug" and "cosy" they have been festering under a blanket.

I am not sure how aware they are that food costs will rocket due to the weather. Plants need rain and sun and warmth to grow.

Other areas of Northern Europe have had the same weather as us.

Squidlette · 09/06/2024 10:10

I'm used to rain in June. That's always been a thing. But this weather is more like spring. Blowing a gale; sideways rain; chilly wind even when the sun's out. Half term was a washout. Last week was rain every day. This weekend has been showery. I get home around 6 on weekdays. just want to be able to sit in my garden occasionally.

TheMoth · 09/06/2024 10:15

There are some positives though- exam marking isn't as painful if you can't go outside anyway.

Although it's chilly sitting still for so long.

I don't believe that there is actually any scientific that "poorer countries are experiencing intolerable heat and people are dying" as a result of this aspect of "climate change" - although I would be interested if you can point to a credible data source. Actually, I understand that the evidence shows it to be the opposite - statistically, cold conditions kill more people...see a recent study published by 'The Lancet Planetary Health', concluding that "Most excess deaths were linked to cold temperatures (8·52%), whereas fewer were linked to hot temperatures (0·91%)" https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(21)00081-4/fulltext

The impact on farmers was also conveniently overlooked during the severe droughts we had in 2022. Lots of crowing about how lovely the sun was. Not a lot of thought for the food chain there either.

LuckySantangelo35 · 09/06/2024 11:54

I want sun and heat 🤞

RampantIvy · 09/06/2024 12:10

@PiranhaPeaches while I was enjoyed the warmth of summer 2022, we were badly affected by drought and, as a gardener and as well as being aware of the wider impact, I also wanted some rain.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/06/2024 12:32

Still in Majorca - 26 degrees , sunny cloudless blue sky and quite breezy- totally perfect weather to be honest- but not meltingly hot for those that want 30 degrees plus on holiday

Toomanysquishmallows · 09/06/2024 12:49

I’m in London and it’s still grey and chilly

Tomatina · 09/06/2024 13:13

14C maximum today here in the west country, which means 12 or 13C with the wind. Temp tomorrow night will apparently drop to 9. Feels more like early April than June, and April itself felt more like February.

RampantIvy · 09/06/2024 13:22

Currently 12 degrees and raining in South Yorkshire.

MsLuxLisbon · 09/06/2024 14:11

RampantIvy · 08/06/2024 23:20

I actually think that May was very warm. It didn't rain all that much, either.

I'm not sure what microclimate your area was in @MsLuxLisbon but here in South Yorkshire we had higher than average rainfall for May (8cm more) and we had two or three warm days, but it was cold and wet for most of May.

I was in Scotland and also in London, it was very hot in both places without much rain.

Teddybear12345678 · 09/06/2024 14:22

I'm in the south west overcast very windy 13c ATM yesterday evening turned out nice . I've seen tiktoks of people in Tenerife and lazorante and it's cloudy so isn't just UK maybe a late summer .

JasonTindallsTan · 09/06/2024 18:50

I wonder if some people just perceive temperatures very differently. A pp mentioned it being ‘v hot’ in both London and Scotland. I’ve not noticed a single day this year in the UK that could be described by me as being anything near ‘very hot’. I’ve barely gone out the house without a hoodie.

ETA, I wouldn’t consider anything below 25 degrees to be ‘very hot’.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 09/06/2024 21:11

Was watching Countryfile earlier and on their weather bit, they said its been warmer than average because of the night time temperatures being warmer (and not the daytime which has been lower than average), this was caused by the cloudy nights. There has apparently been no frost in England in March, April or May.

Also a report I was reading said we've just been through the 4th strongest El Niño, which may explain our mild and wet winter and the continent's heat wave last year.

In addition to the El Nino context, the impact of the 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption (which injected massive amounts of water vapour - a potent greenhouse gas - into the stratosphere) is likely to be felt for potentially years, disturbing weather patterns in ways that probably cannot be modelled easily. Yet another natural factor that needs to be taken into account whenever the media present an over-simplified narrative of the climate change! https://climate.nasa.gov/news/3204/tonga-eruption-blasted-unprecedented-amount-of-water-into-stratosphere/

Tonga Eruption Blasted Unprecedented Amount of Water Into Stratosphere – Climate Change: Vital Signs of the Planet

The huge amount of water vapor hurled into the atmosphere, as detected by NASA’s Microwave Limb Sounder, could end up temporarily warming Earth’s surface.

13° and wall to wall rain today. I'd be surprised if we've had five days that could be described as very warm since the last summer holidays.
