Is this colder than most ‘junes’? So miserable

No money to go abroad. No money to put heating on. Struggling to afford indoor activities for dd and just wanted some time outdoors in the sun. It feels like this is the coldest June I can remember? I also don’t get how this fits with global warming… though I expect I am missing how that works? Just so fed up of being cold, for literally nearly a year now!

Driving home yesterday, the local BBC radio warned us of a potential frost for tomorrow morning!! It's JUNE ffs!

Global warming is a hard sell round here.

Global warming doesn't mean everywhere gets nicer, sunnier, weather. Rising land and ocean temperatures cause disruption to established weather systems, which in turn increase the unpredictability and variability of regional weather.

This spring just gone was the warmest in record, but it was also the 6th wettest and 10th dullest, and I believe this summer was forecast to be a washout.

But not much point in worrying about not tbh, we've collectively decided that the 'head in sand' tactic is the best bet here and will continue to ignore reality and refuse to take any action to address it.

See my previous three posts - the science of 'global warming' (rebranded as 'climate change') certainly isn't settled! The people burying their heads in the sand (or sticking their fingers in their ears) are those who are not taking proper notice of the actual peer-reviewed scientific evidence.

I'm in the south east and right this minute I am sitting on my sofa wearing a thick cardigan, with a blanket over my legs and feet!

Caravaggiouch · 08/06/2024 17:34

And I’m in my garden in a tshirt. North east. Bit blowy but the sun is warm. Really don’t care if it’s cooler overnight.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2024 17:44

Currently 13 degrees, sunny and very windy.

Wonderfulstuff · 08/06/2024 18:35

If it helps anyone feel more optimistic - last summer ran late. The first week back at school it was 30+ degrees and October halfterm we still weren't in coats. Maybe it's just because I live under the insulation of the lovely south east pollution but I remember being desperate for it to call down last Autumn (I have a health condition that is made worse by heat).

I have been very interested in this for quite some time. I was at university when the global warming narrative (since rebranded as 'climate change' to cover all bases) was first coming to the fore - it was very lacking then (but I along with many other student environmentalists at the time lapped it up because it seemed to fit in with an anti-establishment, 'green' narrative!). Now it has become the mainstream narrative that is endorsed by the 'establishment' - anybody who tries to argue that the science is far more complicated, and certainly not 'settled' is automatically cancelled - anyone remember David Bellamy? https://www.palatinate.org.uk/tributes-paid-to-naturalist-and-ex-durham-academic-david-bellamy/
Anyway, I am aware that there is a great deal of disquiet in the USA about the inadequacy of their terrestrial temperature record, and I am personally aware that the UK Met Office has markedly decreased the number of official weather stations in recent years https://wow.metoffice.gov.uk/. There is an interesting article here https://dailysceptic.org/2024/03/04/met-office-must-account-for-the-junk-temperature-data-propping-up-net-zero-insanity/
What really infuriates me is the fact that any open scientific debate has been all but completely shut down. It is an absolute nonsense to believe that the science on this matter is comprehensively understood and 'settled', or that dismantling our economy as we race too quickly for 'net zero' will not be the cure that is worse than the apparent disease! If the principal climatic drivers turn out not to be focused on carbon dioxide (and I don't think that will ever be readily admitted, even if it is true) then we are fools not to be focusing instead on making our society resilient to the sort of shocks that will result from extreme weather events in the future (changing climate will continue to exert significant impact, as it always has done, regardless of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels).
I am currently coming to the end of my lunch break - but I will try to find some links to some of the key scientists who have been trying to highlight the issues with climate science at some point over the weekend (credible scientists, including a noble prize winning physicist!).
However, it is important to note that the propaganda machine is now in full swing - and search engines like Google are very efficient at burying sources that don't comply with the current paradigm (and prioritising results for sites that attempt to discredit critical material - the ludicrously scientifically weak 'DeSmog' blog springs to mind!).

This is the first time I have ever replied to a comment directly, but I honestly think what you are saying and have said on your previous posts makes so much sense and is so true. Like everything though, as you allude to if your thoughts do not align with the status quo you are quickly shouted down. Excellent post and links.

CocoPlum · 08/06/2024 21:35

East here, and I'm struggling to dry outside- if it stayed cool but blustery that would be fine but today it started like that and we suddenly had a torrential downpour. I had to use the spin dryer to get the excess rainwater out of the clothes and more came out than after a regular wash. I'm so resentful of having to use the dryer but it's just not possible for things to dry outside!

It does seem unusually cold , I have barely worn my summer clothes yet. It fits with global warming because it is actually climate change, not everywhere will get hotter, some places will get cooler and wetter.

Thanks so much for explaining climate change to us. Are you a man by any chance or just very young

BernardBlacksBreakfastWine · 08/06/2024 22:29

icallitasplodge · 07/06/2024 07:40

It may be warmer but rain more so feel colder.

its becoming a little like a tropical climate at times i feel. The mugginess is the thing.

It’s really not! We’ve actually had warm sunshine today but when the clouds do come over and it rains (like yesterday) it’s cold not ‘muggy’ in the slightest’

@Valeriekat ’are you a man by any chance or just very young?’ 😂😂😂😂 laughing so much at this, I’m going to use this comment a lot!

that said I don’t think @Hopingforno2in2024 ’s post was in any way bad, I was grateful for the explanation!

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen it's a misconception that global warming means warmer summers everywhere - it means more disruptive and stormy weather which has been evidenced.
It was one of the warmest Mays on record but it certainly didn't feel like it, partly because of the rain. June hasn't been too bad so far here in London though.

I actually think that May was very warm. It didn't rain all that much, either. April was dire and June is not shaping up well, but I think July will be hot.

RampantIvy · 08/06/2024 23:20

I'm not sure what microclimate your area was in @MsLuxLisbon but here in South Yorkshire we had higher than average rainfall for May (8cm more) and we had two or three warm days, but it was cold and wet for most of May.

I think the same might happen this year. The children and teenagers stuck in school now might be happy, if so. Not so long ago, the best of the summer was over by late June.

DaffydownClock · 09/06/2024 06:56

I’ve lit the wood burner several times this month; I never imagined I’d need to do this in June!
Yesterday morning I was really cold despite wearing layers but by mid afternoon it was too warm for me to sit in my back garden 🤷🏼‍♀️. The swings in temperature are ridiculous.

On the rain threads someone has coined the term puddlesuit wankers for the "just wear waterproofs" brigade.

What shall we call the "just wear warmer clothes" posters?

For the record I am wearing warmer clothes, but I would love to wear my summer clothes now.

These jolly hockey sticks posters make me cringe. Of course it’s not a normal warm June. For many people sun and warmth helps their mood. Helps them get outdoors more. So of course some will be feeling shit that the summer hasn’t materialised properly.

I am lucky that my mood isn’t related to weather and I am not too fussed about summer. Though even I don’t like being cold in my house in June. But I can understand those who are really fed up. And I roll my eyes at those pretending that it’s all lovely and sunny (I am in London and it’s not been consistently dry and hot). It’s not just about the ‘right clothes’. In June, the right clothes should be summer wear!

Cringeing for you.

LuckySantangelo35 · 07/06/2024 12:56

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

you might wanna go to doctors about that

it’s really not normal to be hot all day following just 30 mins of exercise

Ha so true. Some people on here are so desperate to prove their all-weather worthiness. Like not feeling cold is a moral virtue.

ProblemBlobSpoon · 09/06/2024 07:16

kitsuneghost · 07/06/2024 14:09

If you do it every day it improves your circulation so yes it can do

Having improved circulation does not make you feel ‘hot’ when it’s 11C outside. That is more like a thyroid issue.

ProblemBlobSpoon · 09/06/2024 07:18

RampantIvy · 08/06/2024 09:22

10 degress and rain here. Glad I cut the grass yesterday.

Did the exercise of cutting the grass yesterday mean that you are roasting and hot today?😏

Perfectlystill · 09/06/2024 07:28

It's been freezing and depressing. I can't remember any other year I've had to put the heating on in June. Never

ProblemBlobSpoon · 09/06/2024 07:37

CaptainHaddocksPychotherapist · 09/06/2024 07:32

Oh yes, why is that?

Your inability to understand the issue and your sanctimonious and patronising attitude. June is mean to be hotter and sunnier than Dec. Many people get through the cold months with the hope of a better summer.

Of course people know how to get warm. Hey they do it most of the year. They even know about heating, hot water bottles, thermal vests and cardigans! But they don’t like having to do that in June and it’s ok to complain. ‘Jumpers, coats, MOVE!’ Is patronising, dismissive and lacks emotional intelligence.
