Just that really. And the fact that he likes Nigel Farage and agrees with him. I feel very disturbed.

Every one is entitled to their opinion. I’d never marry a dead beat who voted labour.

I have no time for any man that has no aspiration.

I would never marry a deadbeat of any persuasion. Who would knowingly?

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. I can’t imagine surrounding myself with only people who completely agreed with me on everything.
You can disagree and still love people, you don’t have to take everything personally.

It's the basic values though.
Farage is a fascist. His beliefs are small minded racist populism. Anti environment, anti Europe, anti environment, anti open mindedness. Pro The UK and flag waving.
I am the opposite I love Europe and the EU, love other cultures, love freedom of movement, don't care much about nations and am definitely bot nationalistic. I like supporting the vulnerable and happy to be taxed more (a bit) to help others. I am not very well off, but would share a bit more to make the place better for everyone. I think this is possible by an assets based approach of using the best of what we have and building on it not by negatively berating change.
Farage doesn't give on tiny shit about the UK. He only cares about his popularity and his wealth and anyone who can't see that I would struggle to respect enough to share my life with

DdraigGoch · 06/06/2024 19:41

I would find out more about his views in detail. The whole "this party good, that party bad" is far too simplistic. More than a quarter of the electorate voted for them in 2014, that's a lot of people to write off.

In 2014? Voted for UKIP in what?

Famfirst · 06/06/2024 23:06

Dump him from a great height. You do not need someone who is so full of hate in your life.

Livelovebehappy · 06/06/2024 23:10

Many couples vote for different parties. If it’s a big deal for you, then walk away. Everyone’s different, and can vote for who they want. Many vote differently year on year depending on what matters to them at that particular time. Coming on her asking people what you should do is a tad pointless, as what matters to you, doesn’t necessarily matter to others. Just do you.

Wth is wrong with being Pro The UK and flag waving? So you’re anti UK?

I think DdraigGoch is talking about the European Elections in 2014.

One of the first things I talked with DH about when we started dating was his political views. I think if 2 people have opposite views it would make for a difficult relationship.

I disagree. It’s perfectly possible to have a civil discussion about contentious issues and agree to differ on them while maintaining a solid relationship. It does entail a degree of both emotional maturity & intellectual self-confidence which not everyone possesses, however.

MissingMoominMamma · 06/06/2024 23:17

A man who thought Farage was anything but a fucking, lying, self serving, odious shithole, who is partly responsible for the reason our kids don’t have freedom of movement throughout Europe, whilst his still do…

No.

No.

NO.

I have spoken to him about it. I asked why he likes Nigel Farage. Why he voted UKIP etc. I’ve come to mumsnet to get other peoples opinions because I can gain no more from talking to him. I’m genuinely curious as to what others think and whether I’m making an issue out of something that doesn’t need to be.

Couldn't he answer you? That strongly suggests he likes Farage because he's racist but doesn't want to say so openly.

Michelle12A · 06/06/2024 19:54

Why do we all have to get political - can’t a relationship be based on love…

It's not about 'all political'... But a fundamental difference....

I just could not shag /live with a bloke who was racist... Any more than I could a non feminist or anti-anortionist

As @BringMeSunshineAllDayLong pointed out, the reality is Farage is not pro the UK, and he just pretends he is and goes in for all the ostentatious flag waving etc as a charade to con people. That is one of the many reasons people dislike him. He'd leave tomorrow if it was in his personal interests.

I'm pro the world. Love the UK, Love Europe, Love the bits of Africa, Asia, Americas I've been to. Find flag waving really weird.
I don't love the UK more than many other places. It's great but I'm not more pro the UK than anywhere else. It's all made up boarders anyway. The UK could easily not exist and just be England or England and Scotland or With Wales and no Cornwall. Just nationalist rubbish. Few of us are from any one place. And none of us if you go back long enough. If we were less protectionist and more globalist the world would work much better.

Alicewinn · 06/06/2024 23:23

That's a firm no from me, as it would make travel and living and socialising impossible

Pixiesgirl · 06/06/2024 23:23

My working class, pretty poor Mother loved Margaret Thatcher, no idea why. Still loved her to bits, people are allowed opinions.

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/06/2024 23:24

If his opinions mean you don’t think he’s a nice or decent person then obviously don’t marry him. It’s a shame you’ve come to this realisation after having a child together.

Are you really going to dump him?

I dunno about you, but I'm discerning enough in picking a partner that I'd narrowed the pool to much smaller group than 75% of the 2014 electorate...

I honestly think some people take politics far too seriously than is good for their own mental wellbeing when politics starts to take over every aspect of how they view society and people around them.

StarDolphins · 06/06/2024 23:32

Justcallmebebes · 06/06/2024 20:17

This is insane. Are you seriously saying you haven't spoken to your parents for 5 years because they voted for a party whose politics you don't agree with? I don't believe you for a minute

I agree. Who stops speaking to their parents because they vote for something different to you! Unless you already hated your parents & we’re looking for an excuse.

Op, this wouldn’t bother me. I like a healthy debate. As long as he was treating me how I expected him to, all good.

sauvignonplonk1 · 06/06/2024 20:10

Can someone please outline exactly what it is about Nigel Farage that is so abhorrent?

Apart from everything? Lying during the brexit campaign, referring to refugees as insects, going on IACGMOOH, squatting on the beach with bins scanning the coastline like a sad act, getting sacked from LBC for being a knob, the fact he looks like a melted bonfire bin, throwing a hissy fit because coutts binned him off and going on about it for eons, singing Hitler youth songs as a kid, idolising Enoch Powell, going to promote a criminal presidential candidate
... feel free to research a bit more if you need some more help on why he needs salting like the slug he is

Your post doesn’t read that way. You stated pro UK following declaring him a facist, as if him being pro UK was a bad thing. I never voted UKIP, but I love my country, and no-one should be made to feel bad for saying that.

Mayhemmumma · 06/06/2024 23:38

I'd leave him.
