Dh said he doesn’t need to remember I’m allergic to penicillin

yesterday my health got brought up with dh and I said I’m allergic to penicillin. Dh acted all surprised even though I’ve been in hospital before and it’s been brought up several times at various appointments and I feel like he should know by now (together 15 years)

he said he didn’t need to remember one specific drug, doctors will work it out and he can say it’s the one everyone is allergic to. We travel a lot so we’re not always in developed countries either which worries me now.

i said he surely he can just remember it as that’s better. He said he can’t help not being able to remember everything and he won’t be remembering it and that’s that.

Aibu to be pissed off that he apparently won’t bother remembering one drug I’m allergic to?!

Straycats
I'm in Ireland and have been asked that in just about every interaction I've had in pharmacies or in the hospital, and generally when the gp is doing up a prescription they'll say it too, out loud as if to check 'he's not allergic to penicillin?'. Sorry that happened to you

nobeans · 07/06/2024 06:30

I am allergic to so much medication I can barely remember myself. I carry a list in my purse. I wouldn't ever expect someone to remember

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 07/06/2024 07:16

I'm allergic to a non penicillin one and DD had a reaction to a penicillin based antibiotic, but seems fine with other penicillin. So DH has two specific drugs to remember because I may not be with him in an emergency for DDs.

He manages to remember their names and everything.

Your DH is suggesting he doesn't care about you enough to remember the word "penicillin".

What if you didn't have your purse in an emergency but did have your partner? And you were unconscious?

They might not remember everything but if they can remember enough to say "she's allergic to several different things including <insert common ones here> it's really useful.

How do you find out your blood type? I know mine due to pregnancy but my husband has no idea of his and I don’t know how he’d find out? He’s never even had blood tests.

Is this a serious question? I mean you're both old enough to get married and yet google is beyond you. Hmm.

Anyone who wants to know their blood type can ask their doctor.

In the odd case where they've lost all your files or something, they can test it for you.

Jack80 · 07/06/2024 08:00

I would get a pendant or bracelet with it on and then emergency services can see it if your not with husband or he forgets

Fucking hell it was just a question 😂. He’s never had blood tests, never had surgery, hasn’t been to a GP in the 18 years I’ve known him. Interested as to how the GP would even know his blood type, as he’s never had blood taken. It’s not something that has ever come up in his life. Mine was obviously tested in pregnancy, but that’s the only reason I know it. I don’t know my children’s’ blood types either.

Youdontevengohere · 07/06/2024 08:27

And I think the chances of getting a GP appointment to have his blood checked for it’s type, when we can rarely get one for actual emergences, would be pretty slim.

Wow no need to cuss at me.

Can't believe you don't know your own kids' blood type.

Ask the doctor!

Why would my Dr know?! That’s my point. It’s not routinely tested at birth in the UK. No one has ever taken their blood.

Why are you arguing this with me? If you want to know, find it out. The doctor can help you with that, not me.

Youdontevengohere · 07/06/2024 09:15

I’m not arguing, I’m having a discussion on an online discussion forum. The GP
doesn’t know their blood type. Their blood has never been taken.

He's a bloke - you're asking to much! My husband doesn't even know where I am half the time..............

Not asking too much at all…that is such low expectations. I’d be gutted to be with someone so selfish.

My new-ish boyfriend knows what nuts I’m allergic too. I think her husband /father of children can make the effort to remember penicillin.

Well this is one of the worst "discussions" I've ever had on here.

I don't understand how someone can genuinely have so little nous.

You’re hilarious 😁.
The point is that you said people are irresponsible for not knowing their own/partners/child’s blood type. I was just pointing out that as blood type is not routinely tested for at birth in the U.K., if you’ve not had any health issues requiring blood being taken it’s quite normal to not know your blood type. There are very very few GPs who will test your blood just because you ask them to.
You’re welcome not to engage with me though, it takes two to have a discussion after all.

Ah so you don't actually want to know your blood type.

You want to feel better about not knowing it by insisting there's no way you could/would/should actually know it.

Ok. Have a great day with that.

And you don't know that the GP won't help you (they will). You have just never asked.

I know my blood type.

Youdontevengohere · 07/06/2024 09:25

As I’ve repeatedly mentioned upthread.

Youdontevengohere · 07/06/2024 09:26

But as I’m enjoying this discussion as much as you are, we’ll leave it there.

Begsthequestion · 07/06/2024 09:27

Sorry, I meant you don't know the blood type of the children that depend on you.

Begsthequestion · 07/06/2024 09:28

There seems to be a glut of posters lately who insist that others find things out for them, instead of using the search engines they have to hand themselves .

I want to say it's chatgpt trying to drive up engagement but I fear not.

No they don’t. My son is allergic to penicillin, had recently been prescribed antibiotics and I said, did you mention it to your doctor, he said no he hadn’t and of course he’d not been given penicillin, hey ho guess what he had! He’d taken some over a day and started getting much worse, hubby asked him the name and yes he’d been given penicillin.
when he was little I’d always check with the doctor and then I’d ask the chemist too to doubly make sure.
It’s a salutary lesson he’ll never forget.

Really! I find this hard to believe. Medical records are digital these days and all allergies are red flagged. All pharmacists check against medical records as a ‘doublecheck’, which is why people always think they have to wait too long to collect meds. If this really was the case your son needs to speak to his GP and ask if his allergy is recorded correctly.

It's four years since I retired as a pharmacy technician, and admittedly I worked in a hospital; but we didn't check medical records, only previous dispensing. So we'd see that they hadn't had penicillin before, but not necessarily why.

I’ve worked in several dispensing gp practices and all have checked medical allergies before dispensing prescriptions!

NeedWineNow · 07/06/2024 10:16

In the interests of research I've just asked DH if he knows what I'm allergic to and he immediately answered 'penicillin (and tree pollen)'.

He asked why I needed to know and I told him about this thread. His response?

"Tell the OP that your DH thinks her DH is a c**t. It's not difficult to remember something that important. Write it down if he has to, but he must have that info to hand".

So there we are!
