So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

YABU

You have no idea what their life is like, how much money they are, what they spend it on, how much they gice to charity and god causes, etc. And it is also none of your business.

Just concentrate on enjoying your day out and don't worry about others around you who are out enjoying their day out.

Inverted snobbery is just as bad as snobbery itself. Live and let live.

southeastastra · 06/04/2008 21:47

is inverted snobbery really just as bad, i don't think so.

tinylady · 06/04/2008 21:54

I don't think so either, south east. In fact, even calling it inverted snobbery reeks of snootiness
Those who claim to be affronted by the OP's remarks have behaved very badly.
Give me chavs over these lot any day

Hulababy · 06/04/2008 21:57

Of course it is as bad - it is still discrimination. And discrimination just isn't good is it?

tinylady · 06/04/2008 22:01

I don't see how the OP has discriminated against anyone

southeastastra · 06/04/2008 22:01

i can't help the way i feel about things. it smacks a bit of 'you must think this way'.

LynetteScavo · 06/04/2008 22:02

I rally want a link to the Chloe bag... it's been bothering me all evening.

Hulababy · 06/04/2008 22:03

I just think the Op had made negative judgements about people she doesn't know anything about, because the Op percieves them to be rich. To me that is just as bad as making judgements about someone because you thing they are poor - neither are right.

southeastastra · 06/04/2008 22:06

she's just describing them though, if she'd just said a couple and no other words it'd be hard to picture

scottishmummy · 06/04/2008 22:07

chloe handbags

tinylady · 06/04/2008 22:07

So none of you make any judgements on people you think are poor-

Hulababy · 06/04/2008 22:07

tinylady - why would I?

uttertripe · 06/04/2008 22:13

ah, she was just well ott with the hatred stuff. thats all. if shed posted about being out and having her attnetion drawn to the fact that v 'well' dressed people had left only 40p tip - most everyone would have said 'tight gits' (they were imo) and that would have been the end of it.

the world wont end, for laurie or anyone else, just because people have answered her surprising level of tangible hatred with hostility.

and no, i dont think inverted snobbery is 'as bad' or hurtful as snobbery... mostly because snobbery is kicking people when theyre down. making assumptions about people is always crappy, lazy thinking.

as for throwing out 'oh but i volunteer at samaritans so please stop hating me', well that was just naive, given the way everyone was all warmed up to the subject. its great that you volunteer at samaritans. im certainly glad someone does.
