So we went out for a lovely afternoon waffle at the fabulous waffle house in St Michaels (St Albans). We don't go out much so it was a real treat.

Middle aged almost (mid 50's) couple next to us - him in burberry jacket, Hackett scarf and shirt. Her with £800 quid Chloe bag.

They were on the table next to us and came in the same time. They kept saying how lovely it was and how quick the service was. They had virtually the same as us. Their bill came to £16 - they paid with a twenty. They kept the change. The bloke said what about a tip. The woman said "that'll do, she's only young".

When they left they put 40p on the table for the waitress

i am much more likely to be biscuit-arsed than poker arsed myself but my comfort is my priority

Janos · 07/04/2008 14:10

Mmmm, biscuits! must go to the shops...

UnquietDad · 07/04/2008 14:12

Although people shouldn't expect tips. They are an add-on for good service, not an essential requirement.

I cringed at that bunch from The Apprentice last week going round asking for tips! I'd have been tempted to say "Yes, don't eat yellow snow."

Janos · 07/04/2008 14:17

"Although people shouldn't expect tips."

No of course not. But 40p is sooo rude! Hope that couple get bogie waffles if they come back for more..heh heh ;)

skyatnight · 07/04/2008 14:21

That's a good tip UQD. We've had snow over the weekend and I wish someone had told me that before. Oh well, there's always next year.

theBOD · 07/04/2008 14:26

such bullshit.tipping at all is ludicrous.
the waitress new what the pay was when she took the job and what that wage would allow her to afford.
this thread is nothing more than inverted snobbery.

southeastastra · 07/04/2008 14:26

and so it goes on..and on...

Janos · 07/04/2008 14:29

Hurrah for inverted snobbery!

All us inverted snobs should have a party where we can compare vinyl bags and cheap clothing. Bonus points for Matalan and Primark!

contentiouscat · 07/04/2008 14:31

yanbu we get this all the time hubby goes to look at a job...drive a mile long...shiny Merc & 2 4 x 4s in the drive...then they want the job done "cheaply" as they have just bought a holiday home in France

Well we are struggling to pay for the ONLY house we have so you can fork off...rather work for the "working class" any day

I would generally tip 10% but a minimum of 5%. Of course that is for GOOD service if its bad or disinterested then I wouldnt tip at all.

harpsichordcarrier · 07/04/2008 14:31

lol at the waitress and her choices
yes that's how it works. everyone who gets paid the minimum wage goes into it thinking: oh well I know this job doesn't pay much, but I wouuld rather work here than somewhere else where I would get paid twice as much, because of the job satisfaction

scottishmummy · 07/04/2008 14:32

yes let me rummage through my chloe bag to book & confirm lets meet!

MoreSpamThanGlam · 07/04/2008 14:33

Is this thread still going on?

edam · 07/04/2008 14:33

There's nothing inverted about taking the mick out of the nouveau riche. They aren't actually inherently better than the rest of us, you know!

OP said she was ranting because the people were so mean despite boasting, in public, about their wealth. Pretty poor manners. I wonder about the motives of people who have attacked the OP, tbh... are they tightwads who feel guilty that someone has noticed tightwaddery?

theBOD · 07/04/2008 14:33

ah so she didn't choose to work there? oh blimey someone had better inform the police that someone is being forced to work as a waitress against there will.

inverted snobbery maybe/maybe not. Can't get away from the fact that 40p is a mean tip.

I have waitressed - was grateful for anything but if pushed for a comment would have described a 40p tip as "odd".

If you don't beleive in tipping don't tip; if you do beleive in it, tip what you think service was worth. Leaving 40p says more about you than the service...

...unless you are my 93 year old grandmother in which case you think 40p will still buy you a decent lunch at Coles Corner Cafe in Saunderfoot.

Janos · 07/04/2008 14:41

"Either give something meaningful or don't give anything at all. You can't expect gratitude for 13p or 40p in this case. "

Exactly!

Actually AFAIK the waitress hasn't complained at all. I hope she spat in their drinks though!

PS Scottishmummy you would welcome, as long as you bring biscuits

harhar do you know where they have been

UnquietDad · 07/04/2008 14:49

Although if everyone who buys an 87p drink gives a quid and says "keep the change" - nice little earner !

Yeah imagine if you had five customers like that in one night. You'd have..ummm...65p!

Well you buy a packet of crisps I suppose..

dal21 · 07/04/2008 14:54

there are a lot of ridiculous threads, i agree. but i for one am getting sick and tired at the ones bashing wealthy or perceived wealthy people.

i tend to reserve the word 'scum' for more deserving people...not leaving more than a 40p tip doesnt warrant it IMO.
