To complain about “gender identity” question on a registration form

Manhere2024 · 01/06/2024 09:36

Man here. I just tried to fill in a form sent out by a charity, but one of the questions was:

“Is your gender identity the same as the gender you were assigned at birth?”

I tried ignoring it, but it’s not possible to submit the form without answering this question.

So I emailed them saying that I don’t believe in gender identity theory, & it’s discriminatory for them not to give an option for those of us who are gender critical. I have asked if they can change the form, or handle my registration in another way.

I think they’ll be surprised, and perhaps I’ve embarrassed myself. But I won’t go along with something I consider to be harmful and wrong.

AIBU? What will likely happen next?

So the answer for you is yes. Easy. I don’t see why it affects you in any way apart from ticking a box.

This. I can't eye-roll enough

It's like asking a question about religion and not having a "no belief" option. People would complain about the only option being "heathen" or "prefer not to say".

Nope. I'm an atheist. Id be fine with that

PrincessTeaSet · 01/06/2024 14:26

As someone who doesn't agree with the whole trans thing, I don't really see the issue with this particular question....

It's just asking whether you are trans or not. That's all.

If you're born female and are a woman your gender identity is female.

Manhere2024 · 01/06/2024 10:34

I’ll remember to update this thread when I’ve had their response.

Make sure they know you are a man though. Otherwise you won't get an answer.

No it isn't. Gender identity is a separate concept from gender. Very few people believe in and have a conscious feeling of gender identity. It should not be forced on the majority who don't.

So "agender" then. Without gender. Like asymmetrical= without symmetry.

Symmetry / asymmetry/ non symmetry implies an understanding of what shape and pattern are. Without that understanding shapes have no relationship to each other.

Similarly unless you know if you are male or female biologically then you can have no understanding of what your gender is, and once you know if you are male or female then your “gender” becomes something you are just wearing as an extra layer. Which is fine, if that is what you want, but it doesn’t change your sex.

LadyVioletCrawley · 01/06/2024 14:34

I’ve crossed the questions out on any form where it’s been asked!

You can't do that on an online form that forces you to choose before continuing.

And I thought we were trying to save the planet. Who the fuck is wasting paper on stuff like this ?

Cofaki · 01/06/2024 14:52

Similar to a questionnaire I was filling in today as a scouting volunteer. I was asked my gender, but not my sex and there was no option to say I don't have a gender (because I don't follow the gender religion). So I've gone with other, which will undoubtedly skew their data. It's ridiculous and very bad survey planning.

You say you don't have a gender yet call yourself a man. Boy/man is your gender. Male is your sex.

The poster I replied to doesn't have a gender. It's not about sex.

Beekeepingmum · 01/06/2024 15:07

I hate this type of question too. It could be rewritten as "did you have a penis or a vagina when you were born" or "Are you a real boy/girl?" The questions is on hand woke enough to know some people have distorted views on the world, but not woke enough to know that asking "no, what are you really?" is still going to wind the same people up.

So anyone who doesn't open a poll on AIBU should be moved to Chat?

Who said anything about a poll?

You’re perfectly entitled to not receive the help from the charity if you don’t agree with a tickbox on their form.
feel free to continue complaining and sending emails protesting stuff like this, gen z have the biggest % of people who identify as queer etc and none of it is going to stop because people can’t handle that the landscape is changing.
stop trying to change the world to fit your worldview basically, it’s not going to happen. Soz xx

@Begaydocrime94 luckily we live in a democracy where we can express our views, regardless of the “landscape”. Most of the generation z people who buy into this rubbish will grow out of it anyway. Bless them.

KarenOH · 01/06/2024 15:11

I guarantee someone will forward your email internally or read it out loud and either laugh at you or sigh with exasperation and wonder what it’s like to have so much time on your hands.

you will then get a vague response email back.

SallyWD · 01/06/2024 15:11

Manhere2024 · 01/06/2024 09:42

I don’t have a gender identity. My sex was observed at birth.

And that's fine but the fact is many people do have a gender identity. It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with the notion of gender identity. For many people the question is relevant.

How much time does it take to say 'this is a load of bollocks'.

They should feel embarrassed that they've put something that's factually incorrect on a form and forward it to someone to rectify it.

Or what will happen is what happened in my organisation where we kept all the emails like this and then took them to management, pointed out the people using our organisation didn’t like the questions phrased that way and they got changed

@KarenOH I still think it’s worth it. If I waste a few minutes of someone’s time, having to think about how ridiculous their form is, then it’s a success.

RandomButtons · 01/06/2024 15:15

There are times this matters.

Trans people exist- get over it. You don’t have to believe in gender identity to accept that some people do. It’s no more offensive than asking religion.

HollyKnight · 01/06/2024 14:58

A man is an adult human male

So then the question should be

do you consider yourself to have a gender identity? If yes is it the same as your sex recorded at birth?

yes
no
I don’t believe in gender identity
