DP called me a middle class racist

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

You are right.

Labour have mo plan for border control or immigration at all, the conservatives are at least trying their best. And without some control our infrastructure is going to collapse, and we already have a severe housing shortage due to the influx of Afghan, HK and Ukrainian families - people in genuine need at the time - we simply can not accept economic migrants by the 100s of thousands as well.

Don’t get me started on the spiteful policy of taxing schools that will do nothing to create an equal society, and will only make things worse.

Labour WILL unwind all the progress on women’s rights and we will be back to the start with trans activism.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I couldn’t accept my dh ever calling me a racist, was it supposed to be a joke??

What progress have the tories made to women’s rights?

When most of their polices negatively impact women more than men

it has everything to do with Brexit

Its a bit sad you don’t understand it tbh

I don’t agree 🤷‍♀️ Pointless getting into a debate about Brexit. It’s happened and it’s here to stay.

You can’t just disagree with basic facts

Well most tories try so maybe you can

DojaPhat · 31/05/2024 23:10

I don't know what everyone is up in arms about! I'm with you OP! I'm all for voting tory because they know what a woman is! As we've seen over the past decade plus women have never had it so good in society!

specialsauce · 31/05/2024 23:11

Is that worse than a working class or upper class racist?

The conservatives have brought in legislation to protect women’s single sex spaces and have publicly said we don’t have penises, something Starmer has REPEATEDLY failed to do. Labour couldn’t care less about women or girls. Or our safety.

I have tried but cannot understand people voting for the Tories. They have ruined everything good about this country. The current government are fraudulent liars with blood on their hands over Covid. And your voting for them to cover your arse on private school fees? Your future health care will cost you a lot more than a proposed tax in the future on schools

Looking forward at proposed policies I’m sure people would say
I have tried but cannot understand why people are voting Labour.

apart from the desire for a change, like the grass is always greener 🙃

CountFucula · 31/05/2024 23:12

I utterly abhor the Rwanda plan and would never vote for a party that proposed it. Immigration won’t get sorted under the Tories - they run a shambolic home office. I also don’t have a problem with immigration - I have a problem with people risking their lives on small boats and think there should be safe passage. For me a Tory vote is actually often a racist vote as the people I have met who vote Tory are also white, bigoted and wealthy and openly state racist views (about people in cities, asylum seekers, Polish people etc ) perhaps it’s a coincidence….

ArnottL · 31/05/2024 23:13

Partner means 'stranger', why are you bothered about what a stranger says to you? Would be a different thing if a husband, brother or parent said that to you.

Skyedancer · 31/05/2024 23:14

I vote Labour and am happy for other people to use private schools for their kids. Frankly I would too if I could afford it.

I agree with the Tories about protecting women’s spaces but that’s about it.

I would be very upset if my husband voted Tory in the election and vice versa

Do you not see you are being so racist! What is wrong with Rwanda? It is a beautiful country.

So you think that one thing makes life so much better for women?

So much so it makes the financial impact of Tory policies that disproportionately impact women fade away?

Do you think that makes the fact women are on average £1400 a year worse off since the tories came into power (compared to men who are £1100 worse off a year) and even worse yet for black women who are on average £1800 a year worse off since the Tories came into power?

You really are so narrow minded you think GC policies make up for alll the shit?

No it isn’t. Will happily bet my shirt on the UK being back in the EU within 20 years (when younger people who ought to have been included in the vote can have had their say).

You should really vote for the good of society - not for selfish reasons and not for individual policies. Who cares about private school fees when the nhs is in such a state?

Labour and Tory ideology is completely different so swapping makes no sense. You vote for a party that helps to distribute wealth more fairly and provides a safety net for the disabled/ill. Or you vote for the rich public school boys who care about nothing except keeping themselves and their friends rich.

Mumsnet is so odd though because generally speaking, people seem to consider themselves left wing but if anyone mentions benefits there is outrage🙄.

He did not admit to "partying" he said there was a gathering of his staff who provided a cake on his birthday. I am no fan of Johnson or the Tories, but there was no partying

So why was Downing Street the most fined address in the whole country for Covid breaches, why did staff have to clean up vomit, who broke the child's swing in No 10 garden? Then there was "wine time" every Friday, the purchase of a fridge especially to store the booze in, those shopping trollies being trundled back from the local Tescos packed with bottles. Johnson may or may not have been at some of those gatherings but as PM he set the tone for that administration and it was was one of contempt for the rules and contempt for the public mixed in with overweening entitlement I despised Thatcher, but can you imagine such flagrant carrying on under her watch

I would rather be safe from rape in a hospital or for my teen girls to change whilst shopping without men putting them at risk or be able to compete in sports - prisons where officers are raped. Yes! I am going to choose safety and legal protection every fucking time for my dds and I. I don’t want hairy men doing my smear tests or my mammogram thanks. I choose dignity and my rights to be legal protected. Over all else.

It’s astonishing you think Labour will ever address the pay gap, how are they going to manage that when they think men can be women overnight?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ Sure you can address the pay gap by shipping in men in dresses and artificially altering the reality.

CountryMumof4 · 31/05/2024 23:25

My husband and I both vote differently and do have disagreements about it. Must admit I gave him a bollocking about voting for brexit and then had a very awkward dinner party conversation with his dad after he raised it again (his dad had voted for it too). They're both constantly moaning about increased import/export rates now, which I'm quietly smug after telling them exactly what would happen. It's caused all sorts of issues where I work though, for that exact reason.

I think calling you racist is bang out of order, but I do think you should be able to have reasonably amicable disagreements about it. We all have and are entitled to have our own opinions. (I still think I'm right though, obvs).

lightisnotwhite · 31/05/2024 23:25

@CountFucula There is safe passage. There's a ferry, the channel tunnel and a train from France. There's no reason you can't be a refugee in France ( EU utopia) and then come to the U.K.

The fundamental basis of democracy is that everyone must be allowed to vote for whichever party or MP they wish for any reason at all. There is no hierarchy of reasoning, intention or sentiment in a democracy. Each person gets one vote and can choose for themselves how to use it without interference from anyone else.
