DP called me a middle class racist

1000 replies

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:02

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

I have tried but cannot understand people voting for the Tories. They have ruined everything good about this country. The current government are fraudulent liars with blood on their hands over Covid. And your voting for them to cover your arse on private school fees? Your future health care will cost you a lot more than a proposed tax in the future on schools

SleepyHollowed84 · 31/05/2024 22:46

OP are you happy with the state of the nation? Do you think it’s working well for the country, and for people here? Great, then vote Tory and we can continue as we are.

Personally I can’t see anything worse than carrying on with this mess we’ve got in in the past 14 years, but you do you.

IMO voting for a party whose ministers have quite a horrendous record of making sexist, racist jokes and comments is an interesting choice, and I can see how that would make supporting them racist adjacent, but again…. You do you. It’s a democracy after all.

What about those of us who don’t support any of the parties currently out there? I won’t vote Tory this time - did last time but I don’t think they’re delivering on what they promised us. And seeing the far left in the Labour Party circling like hyenas already this week, I honestly couldn’t see myself voting them in either. I just wish there was a party out there which represents me, but there isn’t.

It may or may not be a problem - but a bit rich coming from you though. You're an immigrant yourself.

You see, that reply to OP is the real racism.

  1. Viewing her as an immigrant, when it was her grandparents who emigrated here (assume, unless her parents moved abroad and then back here, that she's British).
  2. What does her grandparents being immigrants have to do with her having valid concerns about the handling of mass immigration and the impact on less advantaged communities?
  3. Your post implies you think 'all immigrants are the same'. They're not. They're, like everyone else, individuals.

Issues around mass immigration are no different to issues regularly raised on here around regional within-UK 'blow-ins'.

Absolutely there's no justification for hate towards 'someone not from here' (whether from abroad or within-UK 'blow-in') but that bigotry is not the same as discussing the issues and impacts and looking for compassionate but reasonable solutions.

Legal immigrants are being “wind rushed” RIGHT NOW. My husband has indefinite leave to remain, and it was only by reading a newspaper article that I found out that unless he gets his paperwork transferred online by the end of this year, he will no longer be legally allowed to remain here. We now have to provide evidence that he has been in the country every year since he arrived. Hope many of you have payslips dating back twenty years? That’s the evidence we need to provide to update the paperwork. Trying to provide that evidence is a bloody nightmare.

It’s costing us hundreds of pounds to do this sand it’s taking days at a time to chase, and it is only by my happening to read an article that we are doing it at all. How many thousands of people will have no idea and then suddenly discover at the end of this year that they are no longer legally able to remain?

This will be because of whichever ghastly company it’s been outsourced to. I’m afraid the biggest invisible failure of the last 14 years of Tory government was its failure to repeal the constitutional changes Blair made, which took key decision making powers away from our elected members of parliament into the hands of unelected quangos and private companies with government contracts. E.g. inflation is not just a mathematical, fiscal or economic decision that’s should be decided by unaccountable central bankers. It is a deeply political decision which has real impacts in the lives of the electorate. This is what led to Blair being accused of running a sofa government, because he sidelined Parliament from the running of the country.

I don’t disagree. I just don’t think the answer is another 5 years of the Tories. But that’s my opinion.

As Tory voters are middle class racists apparently 🤷‍♀️

hes said in the past how we “should technically” be tories due to the proposed tax brackets but how awful it would be if we were as it’s just looking out for yourself. Whilst I agree somewhat it’s not why I’m voting Tory.

I don’t know the comment has just got my back up a little.

he also scoffed and said “wow well I’d be keeping that to yourself as you’re looking for trouble if anybody knows you’ve voted Tory.”

You would potentially base your vote on tax brackets? Really? There is shallow, and there is this. Surely you can see that living in a more just society is more important than £100 extra a year?

Scruffily · 31/05/2024 22:55

Why does a lifelong Labour voter care that a few very privileged families will have to pay a bit of tax on their kids' school fees?

You do know, don't you, that the Tories have done very little to deal with illegal immigration, and that what they are targeting is perfectly legal immigration by refugees? As someone whose family has benefited from migration, why do you want people fleeing nightmare conditions in their own countries not to benefit?

If you are feminist, why do you want to vote for the party that made it easier to benefit from the GRA and which has consistently made life harder for women?

RaverQuavers · 31/05/2024 22:55

Livelovebehappy · 31/05/2024 22:48

But that’s not what we are getting. We’re getting mostly young men with no skills and no family, who can’t speak the language. I’m all for immigration, but people who have something to offer. It would be great to go with the points system like Australia and Canada. Then we can get skilled people, with families, here.

And why is that…

begins with B and ends in rexit

Tunefultwix · 31/05/2024 22:57

Sounds more lower-middle class to me, as most Tory voters are: like someone who feels they've reached an ok position and don't care about those left behind. So not middle class.

SeriaMau · 31/05/2024 22:57

Justcallmebebes · 31/05/2024 21:02

Get a grip. There was no partying and you know it

Even Boris agreed there was. Although as a consistent liar what does that mean?

It's one of the words people think they can use to appear morally superior.

Not voting Tory does make one morally superior to someone who does

Basic facts unfortunately

Why would anyone who wants to tighten up on immigration vote Conservative? They’ve been in power for over a decade and the result is the current shambles of a system. What makes you think they’ll do anything to sort that out?

Edited

And which groups make it impossible to control it?

Well of course we are. Who would you send? Granny and grandad, young mum with the kids? Obviously not.

If the family manages to pull together the funds to send anyone, of course it will be the fit, young man who has more chance of getting to the UK than anyone else.
once they’re here, have put their asylum claim in and established a life, their family can follow. It’s really not difficult to understand.

Sometimes, especially when choices seem equally poor, it can be worth voting on a local constituency basis rather than national party basis. Obviously that relies on you having at least one good local candidate (whichever party) but it's one option to consider.

You are going to vote Tory now? Jeezo. Dunno if you are racist (are you?), but you clearly don’t care about the NHS, the economy, austerity, etc, etc…

this.
Seriously op you can’t be serious voting Tory at this point. I despair!!!

JudgeJ · 31/05/2024 22:58

What do you mean control it?

This government takes 18x longer to process asylum claims than any other western nation. This leads to the issues we are seeing currently. Instead of you know, sorting their shit out they instead placate the ham faced population by saying they’ll ship everyone off to Rwanda.

Ignoring the fact that it costs more per person to ship them off and pay to house them in Rwanda compared to them being housed temporarily here until their case is reviewed

Nothing to do with Brexit. We can set our own rules on immigration - a points system would be great. Then we can bring in people to fill gaps in the employment market. I want tighter borders, and a stop to illegal immigration.

I think suffering with limited understanding is a prerequisite for those who vote Tory

FunnysInLaJardin · 31/05/2024 23:05

YABU for voting for the tories on the basis of GI. That is not a good enough reason

Polishedshoesalways · 31/05/2024 23:06

You are right.

Labour have mo plan for border control or immigration at all, the conservatives are at least trying their best. And without some control our infrastructure is going to collapse, and we already have a severe housing shortage due to the influx of Afghan, HK and Ukrainian families - people in genuine need at the time - we simply can not accept economic migrants by the 100s of thousands as well.

Don’t get me started on the spiteful policy of taxing schools that will do nothing to create an equal society, and will only make things worse.

Labour WILL unwind all the progress on women’s rights and we will be back to the start with trans activism.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I couldn’t accept my dh ever calling me a racist, was it supposed to be a joke??
