DP called me a middle class racist

1000 replies

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:02

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

A friend of mine says this is an issue she faces all the time. "People telling her she's not black enough to be one of them"

To me this is just as much racism from black people to mixed race people as black people face with white people tbh

Yes it's deeply unpleasant and just not needed.

Agree repugnant.

StaunchMomma · 01/06/2024 18:41

You're being hugely sensitive, OP.

As an aside, I'd get the major ick if my DP said he was voting Tory. It would absolutely change my opinion of him.

You are, of course, 100% within your rights to vote for whatever party you choose but he has the right to feel how he feels about that change in viewpoint, too. What we believe in/support is a huge part of who we are.

Well to be fair you are saying precious little on the subject so who knows 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️
I notice most Labour people do not like to discuss what actually happens WITHOUT a deterrent…

True. There’s almost no limit to demand

So think about what level of trafficking you’re after

newnamethanks · 01/06/2024 18:43

No wonder the Conservative Party can't find enough parliamentary candidates to support their 'policies' and the current ones are galloping away in droves.

If you are pro Labour can you say how the border security idea actually works?

The U.K. does what exactly?

I don’t think anyone else is selling in ‘smashing the gangs’ because demand and supply is almost endless

Or you could look at the benefits system
Or free housing
Or free healthcare
Or free schooling

The list goes on without the need to look anywhere but the ballooning welfare state….

What do you mean by ‘free housing’? Asylum seekers are temporarily housed in hotels - for free - whilst their asylum claim is processed, because they are not allowed to find a job during this time. It’s only free because they are not allowed to work during this time. There is no other free housing that I know of that would be available to them. If their asylum claim is successful and they are given a council house (which is unlikely), this would not be free, as people still have to pay rent to live in council houses.

Nmchnger · 01/06/2024 18:50

To be fair if my husband announced he was suddenly voting Tory I'd leave him so you're getting off lightly.

I've never voted for labour. I am not anti Tory. This lot are proven incompetents though and I wouldn't trust them to deliver, I am anti-them

The reason I said unsure is because I'm not exactly sure what a deterrent might look like. I don't see either party really coming up with a way of making coming here worse than whatever place people are leaving

Whoswhoof · 01/06/2024 17:14

Why don’t they stop off in France on their way?
or the multiple other countries they often pass through. Refuge elsewhere.

Because perhaps they already speak English - so will find it easier to get a job in the U.K. than, say, France - and perhaps they already have family settled in the U.K.

You are deluded, the ‘solutions’ you suggested will cost tens of millions. Is that the magical money tree again that Labour seem to rely so heavily on.

As opposed to the Tory money tree which fruits only when they have the opportunity to hand an overpriced contract out to an underqualified mate, but is sadly bare when ever anyone brings up the issue of our crippled essential services, and the problems that get kicked down the road until they are too urgent to ignore and about 10x the cost of heading them off in the early stages.

Your marriage ain’t up to much if you can’t make up your own mind about the world. Poor sod. I guess he just votes how he likes and nods along with you….

And what of the Labour deterrent? How’s that plan shaping up?

Rayner found any extra council houses lately?!

This makes no sense. I've made up my mind about the world and I wouldn't want to share my life with someone with diametrically opposite views to me.

You couldn’t tolerate anyone with a different view…. I thought you were joking. You do realise your husband has his OWN brain in his head and can make his own decisions. So coercive and controlling.

I don’t think anyone else is selling in ‘smashing the gangs’ because demand and supply is almost endless

I think it's quite clear what they are hoping to do- hire more staff specifically trained to manage the border, and set up a specific agency to focus on the problem that we have, because the current Border Force is massively understaffed and can't do any more than it is doing, which is not much.

Whether they'll be successful and exactly the step-by-step plan for how they are going to do it, I don't know, and I doubt there's many voters who read the detail of the manifesto or have access to the planning documents, beyond seeing whether the plan outlined appears to correlate with common sense.

Immigration is not one of my main concerns when voting. However, it seems to me that a plan, is better than no plan or a plan that has been tried multiple times over 15 years and is still not working.

The Tories have been given many, many chances and all we've had is an utter shitshow and things going from bad to worse. It's been an entertaining and spectacular display of ineptitude, as long as you aren't one of the people who has died or had your life destroyed by it all, but I think most normal people have had enough of the comedy circus now.

Do you think this border force will arrest a leader of a trafficking network in say Iraq?

Then what? No one takes their place?

If we’re proposing ‘smashing the gangs’ how much does it cost to clean up a global issue in your view

It's neither coercive or controlling. He can choose to vote for who he likes and I can choose to leave him if his vote shows me he has views I find abhorrent.

No, they haven't suggested that. They are suggesting having a better strategy for preventing people entering the country, not stopping them from leaving their own countries. People smugglers don't operate just from one end, they have contacts and criminal networks that span the length of the routes they traffic across. "Smashing gangs" is typical political claptrap and doesn't mean anything. Having dedicated staff and agencies in place to deal with illegal migration is a plan.

Nmchnger · 01/06/2024 19:12

Scavernick & Polishedshoesalways absolutely not joking, it would completely give me the ick and I couldn't be married to someone with those ideals. I'm not controlling him, he can vote for who he wants to, just as I can chose to remain arrived to him or not. Fortunately he's a card carrying member of the Labour party so I think our marriage is safe.
