DP called me a middle class racist

1000 replies

Whoswhoof · 31/05/2024 20:02

Just now. Discussing the upcoming election. Both always voted labour. I said I’m voting Tory in the upcoming GE for a multitude of reasons, some of which come under the bracket of gender identity, kids sex ed, general tightening of illegal immigration, not taxing private schools. I explained you kind of just have to vote for the party that most aligns with your beliefs as you’re never going to agree with all of them (I don’t agree with a lot of Tory policies, but the ones that are important to me are relevant)

DP then jokes “So you’re a middle class racist now!” Then says only joking. DP will be voting labour.

Aibu to think this is quite out of order?

edited for typo!

OP he's a dick. I'm voting conservative too...I used to be a member of the LP.

Kemi Badenoch just did a great thread on X (Twitter) that explains why.

Do you think people read this and think “you know what I actually am a twat, better change my ways and vote labour/lib dem/green”.

More likely they think god I have nothing in common with these idiots who vote for XYZ non-Tory party so that’s obviously not my political home.

Of course I don’t. Tory voters are devoid of rational thought.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 01/06/2024 09:38

CockSpadget · 01/06/2024 09:35

Labour wasn’t mentioned in the comment though?

It’s almost always labour voters that behave this way. Look back a few years to the die hard corbyn fans and it’s even worse. Lib Dem/green voters usually don’t seem as bad but there’s a vocal minority of labour supporters who think they are the casting vote on moral superiority.

I’m a floating voter so no skin in the game.

Why do you think most people care about converting people?

Facts are most people’s deeply entrenched views will never change

So might as well call them twats

I think that’s the thing here, that the OP is clearly lying that they ever voted Labour to start with (didn’t reply to any questions about this). It’s just not believable.

As it’s not believable that someone could suddenly switch like this in a marriage - essentially changing all their viewpoints on multiple issues. I knew I was marrying a One Nation Tory and I work with it, debate daily etc. I’d not be best pleased if they had a personality transplant 10 years into the marriage 😂

Edited

Your lack of reading comprehension is startling.

I did say how many times I’d voted labour. I didn’t say once that I was married. Why do my votes need to be “believable” to you?

you come off as very very strange.

I am voting Labour and am desperate to see the Tories out of power, BUT I appreciate that other people don't have to agree with me. Your husband is being disrespectful as are a lot of people on this thread.

Thank you for not missing the point of the thread and for your well rounded view!

Because that’s how general elections work? If everyone voted the same every time we’d always have exactly the same result, give or take a few seats for birth/death replacement 🤯. Or are you happy to have a Tory government forever as long as you can feel satisfied you’re a morally superior person?

Ignore OP. I used to be a labour voter (Blair) and the along came Corbyn, anti-semitism, misogyny, id pol and the hard left.

I don't vote Labour any more as all of the above are still rampant in the party - some barely suppressed. Look at how Rayner, Abbott and the hard left are making Starmer look weak - this is just the start.

I also will not vote Tory at this election despite leaning right. Politically homeless right now.

Do you genuinely think people switch parties due to fundamental changes in their moral compass?

No. They switch parties based on selfishness most of the time. Like the people who voted labour but now switch to Tory because of the school fees issue. They’ve not changed their moral compass, they’ve just been selfish

I’m also currently politically homeless. Just because someone is anti Tory, doesn’t make them automatically Labour.

I am swerving in to ask- do you think being mixed race that this type of comment affects you more?

I think he’s being a dick and disregarding your experiences and right to choose using your own intelligence and process.

I think being mixed race leaves one open to these kind of stupid comments and following on is then the pressure to put up with them in a particular way that affects mixed heritage humans- but that’s another thread…

vote for who you like.

Hello, all you "former Labour voters" spouting Tory attack lines.

Kemi is prepping for the leadership contest, I'm sure Rishi really appreciates her getting busy on that before the election.

I wonder how many doors she's knocked on.

He is white. No mix whatsoever in his family. The reason I mentioned my ethnicity is because I assumed I’d be jumped on about race related issues from mostly white lefties. Again I’m assuming, but couldn’t be bothered with the clarification after the fact.

I’d say the vast majority of people vote based on their own self interest combined with a bit of what they think would be best for the country overall. Surely that’s not some great secret? That’s why parties put in policies which appeal to the masses.

You could equally say many labour or other left wing voters are equally selfish as they’re only voting so they get more benefits.

I think people can or can previously have (perhaps naively) believed Tory policies were in the best interest of the country. It doesn’t necessarily make them racist disabled haters. Ignorant maybe? And yes some probably are vile people, but I think to suggest that of such a significant proportion of the country is just wrong.

Unfortunately the term "racist" is being used by some ignorant turds to shut down anyone whom they cannot persuade to their echo chamber. This terrible state of affairs means that genuine racism is not taken as seriously as it should be.

This. Wanting to limit/ control immigration is not racist ffs.
Whether the Tories are the best people to solve those issues is another matter though.

Unsure if I would vote for the tories even if she was leader but I think it would be absolutely excellent to see a youngish black woman as the leader of a major party and Kemi seems really great. One thing I will say for the tories is they really have put forward a diverse selection of leaders in a way that labour simply have not.

Lol I deleted because I thought it looked like I has asked someone randomly what their DP's ethnicity was. Thanks for answering. My DH is the same. White, middle class, privileged generational wealth blah blah like a lot of the hard left. He would be embarrassed to be calling me racist, and would not do it seriously.

There was a recent thread on here about Aus immigration policy and so many posts agreeing they should control and the policies were understandable

Utterly ridiculous. My grandparents came here legally, not on a rubber boat across the channel. With that said OF COURSE immigration is a problem.

it would be lovely if “no human was illegal” and we could all frolic about the planet without borders and taxes but that is NEVER going to be reality. The reality is we have governments, laws, taxes, infrastructure, documentation. And none of that is going anywhere so YES it needs to be controlled.

————————-

faith is somewhat restored whilst catching up on this thread, tories seem to be able to argue a proper debate whereas the left seem to be shouting down, name calling, being abusive and undermining. “We’re better than you coz think of the homelessness” Point rested I guess!

PS there is no reason for anyone to be homeless. The council offers a no second night out scheme so a lot of it is through choice. And I said that as somebody who gives a lot of money to the homeless.

PS there is no reason for anyone to be homeless

I work in MH in London. Given the state of the some of the hostels, I can see why some people don’t take up some offers to remain in places where there are people with untreated drug and MH problems and they feel less safe there than on the street. And temporary hostels are still counted as ‘homeless’ just not street homeless. Things aren’t as rosy as you think, unfortunately.
