To think Cornwall has gone down market?

Not my opinion - that of my friend. She said she was down in West Cornwall for the bank holiday weekend and the crowd seems go have changed a lot over the last five years.

ispofbaid · 27/05/2024 21:56

She was in Carbis Bay

I think the demographic is definitely changing, but I’m not sure it’s ever been upmarket. I grew up in Carbis Bay and S’nives and spend most of my childhood on CB beach (but now live away). Even then, it was popular with northerners and tourists from the midlands, many were working class.

the past few years I’ve been down there has been a bit of a change in the tourist demographic, it’s been more diverse and that brings different types of behaviour. Just after the pandemic it was awful, full of people displaced from overseas package holidays, but that seems to have settled.

anunlikelyseahorse · 27/05/2024 22:02

Crowd? As in other tourists? Don't think Cornwall can be held responsible for who visits!

ispofbaid · 27/05/2024 22:04

Friend reckons Carbid Bay used to be hooray henries but now it’s northerners.

Was a bit offended at that being a moss side girl!

cannonballz · 27/05/2024 22:06

Cornwall is what it is and always has been

Westfacing · 27/05/2024 22:06

I've never been but thought Carbis Bay sounded posh! Wasn't the G20 Summit held there a few years ago, with the Queen in attendance?

Beezknees · 27/05/2024 22:08

Northerners are downmarket?

Westfacing · 27/05/2024 22:09

Beezknees · 27/05/2024 22:08

Northerners are downmarket?

And Midlanders it seems!

TheThingIsYeah · 27/05/2024 22:09

@KernowMaiden

it’s been more diverse and that brings different types of behaviour.

Like what?

A little pang at S'nives 😍

anunlikelyseahorse · 27/05/2024 22:20

Ahem, and what may I ask makes a northerner down market....I'll have you know I have labs, a Barbour and very old Land Rover (before they turned to shite).

TeenLifeMum · 27/05/2024 22:23

Maybe we need a new Hadrian’s wall lower down near the Cotswolds to keep those down market northerners out of the south? 🤔🙄

ExtraOnions · 27/05/2024 22:24

I was in Blackpool this weekend .. it was full of bloody Southerners. They need to stick to thier lane, I want sticks of rock, kiss me quick hats, and Donkey Rides …. Not craft beers, quinoa, and man-buns.

KernowMaiden · 27/05/2024 22:26

Yeah see I knew that there would be no way of describing my experience without somehow pissing someone off. I have no airs and graces, I grew up on a (locally) notorious estate.

I was describing the tourists of my youth factually, the factory fortnight was huge and people made annual pilgrimages to Cornwall at that time. Often the same people in the same weeks of the summer to the same accommodation. I had many friends as a child who would come each year. A couple of summers ago I had a morning coffee chatting to a chap from Manchester well into his 70s who had been coming since he was a child..

different behaviour means just that where once upon a time you had people behaving similarly it is less so now - generally more anti social behaviour over time, eg last summer on Meor the large group who were drinking spirits (from the bottle) at 2pm with their kids around and playing extremely loud music from a speaker - most bemusing to see how they were riling the other large group who had been the ‘rowdy’ ones until that point.

Barbour’s themselves are northern! The epitome of landed gentry style is from South Shields.

KernowMaiden · 27/05/2024 22:30

But maybe reference point matters because I think pre-covid it was probably more upmarket than it is now, especially in the food dept. At one point it was a bit of a foodie spot with good and varied food options at varied price points. The food now is generally samey, all overpriced. Literally every restaurant sells crab linguine. Last summer I had an awful lunch at the Rum and Crab Shack (just deep fried awfulness) and they charged me £4 for a thimble of coleslaw.

Emmets is a bit racist.

Cornwall has always been overrated. Never seen the appeal - especially since covid and the awful way they treated "outsiders" during the lockdown.

Beezknees · 27/05/2024 22:36

Westfacing · 27/05/2024 22:09

And Midlanders it seems!

As a working class midlander who spent a couple of years living in seaside Devon I met some of the worst riff raff of my life living there! Massive lack of jobs apart from seasonal pub work and huge drug issues. And because it's more expensive to live, the wealth gap was more apparent.

Watchingninetydayfianceeagain · 27/05/2024 22:38

*And now it’s Northerners…?!

JudgeJ · 27/05/2024 22:39

Beezknees · 27/05/2024 22:08

Northerners are downmarket?

Many on hear seem to lack any understanding, some of the most expensive areas of the country are in the North.
