To think Cornwall has gone down market?

Not my opinion - that of my friend. She said she was down in West Cornwall for the bank holiday weekend and the crowd seems go have changed a lot over the last five years.

Maybe people in general have gone downmarket.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Just like the thread about going to restaurants in leggings and hoodies. Everyone in general seems to have gone down market.

Bikeandbasket · 28/05/2024 08:23

My accent is a little bit North East as I’m originally from TEESSIDE (travesty) and I have lived here, in Cornwall for many years since primary school.

My accent has never been an issue. Ever. Because a huge part of being British is having ancestry from all parts of the UK. We’re a small island.

I hate threads that are started to cause divide. The lack of awareness and critical thinking is alarming!

Mostlycarbon · 28/05/2024 08:28

I thought the posh crowd went to Rock.

KitKatChunki · 28/05/2024 08:29

It's because CoL means people can't afford to go "abroad". We're getting all the tourists other countries (Tenerife) are striking about that cause chaos on the streets and use their emergency services.

Yes and Padstow and Fowey.

AgathaAllAlong · 28/05/2024 08:37

Silly take. Cornwall is famous for vans of surfers rocking up.

In general I think people down south are surprised (and if they're prejudice, annoyed) when people with northern accents go to southern nice places. It's insane because Cornwall is a fair drive for many "southerners" too. Going to start moaning that there's southern accents in Keswick and, god forbid, Edinburgh.

Austerity has a lot to answer for honestly. So much of the UK looks really deprived right now. There are obviously lovely bits all over, but that’s mainly down to locals doing what they can with zero funding from the government

This. We’re in France at the moment and the contrast between the drive down to Dover (shitty roads, shitty unkempt town centres) and beautiful France with well kept towns and amazing roads is so, so depressing.

Munne257 · 28/05/2024 08:38

Isn't the entire country "Northern" to the Cornish?

I don't know about upmarket / downmarket and don't know Cornwall very well (have been once many years ago).

But I have noticed that since the pandemic everywhere is packed and crowded, from bars to various tourist destinations. And tourist behaviour is more inconsiderate. It could just be because of the overcrowding effect but something has shifted. And not for the better.

Agreed re the shift. It feels like double the amount of people hatched during the pandemic. BUT I also believe social media is to blame for a lot of overcrowded situations, search Cornwall on Insta and TikTok and the most popular posts will feature the usual suspects St Ives, Newquay etc so the easily led masses flock there.

I remember being on holiday with my (West Country) parents in the 1970s, and DM looking up from her book and declaring: "Oh christ, a whole coach full of Mancunians has arrived"!
Not a fan of northerners, my mother.

Yes and Padstow and Fowey.

The idea of Fowey being a place posh people visit has always made me laugh. It was really rough when I was growing up 😹

meetmeatsunset · 28/05/2024 08:46

I'm betting your friend isn't as 'up market' as she thinks. Snobby cow.

@Beezknees well lots of people don’t like tattoos.

Gosh, well they'd better get used to them seeing as over half of 18-40 year olds have them these days.

What a great contribution, and a charmer of a parent.

The comments about Camborne and Redruth make me laugh. These places and similar towns and villages are the REAL Cornwall. Places where families have lived and grafted for many generations and where facilities to encourage tourism haven't been introduced because they are poor, ex industrial areas and hence not very picturesque. It's a far more authentic representation of Cornwall than all these seaside towns with rows of arcades, overpriced cafes and pasty shops.

I live in a place which is also often considered to be 'rough' and I think what people really mean is that it's poor and not pretty. The highest crime rates in Cornwall are actually typically in more touristy places.

Away from the coast Cornwall is vastly made up of working class people - we usually can't afford to live anywhere else. Perhaps your friend has visited the wrong area OP!
But there is so much beauty to be found all over the county and it's great that people of all demographics and from all areas want to come and enjoy it.

ComeAlongPeggy · 28/05/2024 08:12

@Beezknees of course not. But generally speaking people with neck/face tattoos and/or “kyran, rheece, Kayleigh” with birth dates on their chest might just possibly be more likely to want Butlins type holidays, smoke and be quite loud.

I am aware that tattoos do not mark people out as working class/loud/drinkers.

I’m also aware that the neck tattoo brigade are just as likely to be kind and lovely as the next person.

But I love St Ives for the peace, the art, the light, the food, the surf etc. If I wanted arcades, chips and lager I’d go to Skegness.

Aw aye it’d be a shame if your holiday was spoiled by the presence of working class people, poor you!

Interesting you should post that.

Cornwall used to receive millions from Europe, thousands of jobs created and money poured into infrastructure in the most deprived areas and to tourist attractions, like the Eden Project helping to bring money into the county.

Cornwall voted Leave.
Oh.

PollyPeachum · 28/05/2024 09:12

@Outdoorsygirl1 "Yes this is it. Dare I say it but it's like people want Butlins."
They want 'butlins' everywhere.
Bloody Grockles!

Definitely, I loved living in Camborne and still only a few miles from the beaches.

ComeAlongPeggy · 28/05/2024 09:22

@Brawcolli not working class people en masse. Loud, brash, boozing, smoking people of any “class”.

Friend reckons Carbid Bay used to be hooray henries but now it’s northerners.

Was a bit offended at that being a moss side girl!

Oh not the northerners her eyes must have melted!
