Not my opinion - that of my friend. She said she was down in West Cornwall for the bank holiday weekend and the crowd seems go have changed a lot over the last five years.

What, all 500,000 residents?!

Pollipops1 · 27/05/2024 22:42

Friend reckons Carbid Bay used to be hooray henries but now it’s northerners.

Are hooray henries better?!

FairisleFairy · 27/05/2024 22:44

Did you tell your friend to leave her prejudice and judgement at home next time?
Does she base her opinion of place on what accent the visitors have?

Many on hear seem to lack any understanding, some of the most expensive areas of the country are in the North.

They must be in a bubble. Probably think we're all still working down the pits.

FountainofTruth · 27/05/2024 22:53

I think your friend is a bit uneducated, I'm up north (Northumberland) and our tourism is booming since covid, mostly from down South coming. So we must have something going for us.

scrapsontheside · 28/05/2024 00:20

Your mate is a numpty

Akamai · 28/05/2024 00:55

We went to Porthminster Beach, which is a few minutes from Carbis Bay.

The cafe/restaurant on the beach was expensive, £10+ for a sandwich or salad.

We had homemade sandwiches / picnic.

Us Midlanders…Downmarket? Ne mind midduck

We’re off to Cornwall in June. Looking forward to it 😉

YourPinkDog · 28/05/2024 01:07

Am I the only one who remembers the tabloid headlines before covid, as a result of young toffs taking drugs and loud partying on the sands of Devon?

KitKatChunki · 28/05/2024 01:13

I think everywhere in the country is looking quite downmarket, other than London of course, after so many years of austerity and whatever hell this is post Brexit.

Pollerono · 28/05/2024 03:27

Yeah not sure I’d call people down market but I know what she means it has changed since G7. She’s right.

Pollerono · 28/05/2024 03:28

And I mean St Ives and Carbis Bay. I live in the area.

GogAndMagog · 28/05/2024 03:31

Maybe people in general have gone downmarket.

AIstolemylunch · 28/05/2024 03:32

Isn't Croyde bay in Devon?

Austerity has a lot to answer for honestly. So much of the UK looks really deprived right now. There are obviously lovely bits all over, but that’s mainly down to locals doing what they can with zero funding from the government

Bit of Spicey thread topic @ispofbaid

BobnLen · 28/05/2024 05:17

She probably means families with DC because surely they are the only ones that go to Cornwall on a half term BHW.

Cannotbebotheredactually · 28/05/2024 05:25

We used to stay at Carbis Bay Hotel when I a child. It was very grand back in the day ! Not sure how you measure downmarket TBH !

Calamitousness · 28/05/2024 05:27

@FountainofTruth as a southerner (now) I can honestly say Northumberland is one of my favourite places in the world. It is simply beautiful. Amazing food as well. Went to some great restaurants and they have a fantastic dairy. Best ice cream ever. And cheeses. Love the place.

Billybagpuss · 28/05/2024 05:39

I was in Carbis bay last year and it seemed posher than when I was a kid.

and yes Croyde is in Devon and Northumberland is gorgeous.

BobnLen · 28/05/2024 05:41

Late DF lived in Penzance, not sure if that has ever been upmarket but it's south west and there were nice places near, we didn't use to go to St Ives as it was usually busy. Bank Holidays will always attract a mixed crowd wherever you go, especially the half term one.

MurielThrockmorton · 28/05/2024 05:43

The Hooray Henries were all at Watergate Bay last time I went (which was a while ago as the entitlement of the other guests put me off).

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 28/05/2024 05:54

Carbis Bay is for tourists. Some great music there but it’s dead in the winter. Sadly your mate thinks she’s better than the rest. Maybe she is?

I use to love the sign on the M1 as I left London that said ‘The North’.

Probably because I’m thick.
