Not my opinion - that of my friend. She said she was down in West Cornwall for the bank holiday weekend and the crowd seems go have changed a lot over the last five years.

Friend reckons Carbid Bay used to be hooray henries but now it’s northerners.

Are hooray henries better?!

Is it the 80's?
Who on earth says hooray henrys?

And what are emmets. Fgs?

TeenLifeMum · 27/05/2024 22:23

Maybe we need a new Hadrian’s wall lower down near the Cotswolds to keep those down market northerners out of the south? 🤔🙄

That’s a brilliant idea; it would keep those chavvy southerners out of our beautiful north country.

ComeAlongPeggy · 28/05/2024 06:25

There was definitely a shift immediately post covid. I don’t think it’s a north/midlands/south issue, it’s a class/culture issue.

I spend a lot of time in and around St Ives. I avoid the harbour area after lunchtime because it feels full of people with tattoos, smoking and being a bit loud. Northerners, midlanders, southerners - no real distinction.

When people ask about what to do on st Ives Facebook groups and people mention the Tate, Hepworth museum, coast walks, great places to eat, surf school etc and people chime in with “that’s not for kids, but there’s some arcades at the harbour” and I just feel a bit 🫣

ComeAlongPeggy · 28/05/2024 06:26

Northumberland for the best place to visit gets my (softy southerner) vote btw

ComeAlongPeggy · 28/05/2024 06:27

Partly because the places we’ve visited have been free of crowds!

RishiFinallyDidTheRightThing · 28/05/2024 06:28

Cornwall is vastly overrated. I have never bothered with it since I discovered West Wales.

Barbour’s themselves are northern! The epitome of landed gentry style is from South Shields.

Edited

Is it downmarket if my Barbour is from the S Shields factory shop, or am I still upmarket “for a northerner”

BoobyDazzler · 28/05/2024 06:38

Who wants to go on holiday and be surrounded by HH’s anyway? Sounds hideouts to me!

Hadrians class wall would just be Hayden’s wall..

decionsdecisions62 · 28/05/2024 06:39

If your friend thinks Northerners are down market she's obviously never been to North Yorkshire? That's such a 'thick' statement. It doesn't even deserve a response actually!

Gagaandgag · 28/05/2024 00:57

Us Midlanders…Downmarket? Ne mind midduck

We’re off to Cornwall in June. Looking forward to it 😉

As Leicester riff raff I must protest - it’s Me Duck!

transformandriseup · 28/05/2024 06:50

That's a good thing surely, Cornwall should be accessible to everyone and not just the rich. It used to be a cheap and cheerful place to go to and don't like how fancy it has become since 2020.

Beezknees · 27/05/2024 22:08

Northerners are downmarket?

Oh very.

😉😁😁

Emmets is a bit racist.

And the extensive use of it as such is why I don't go to Cornwall any more and haven't for ages.

QueenMegan · 28/05/2024 07:24

Never really saw the appeal with Cornwall. Overcrowded and locals are bloody rude.

Never really saw the appeal with Cornwall. Overcrowded and locals are bloody rude.

And it's full of a combination of loud oboxious people and snobs for your fellow tourists

frankentall · 28/05/2024 07:30

And what are emmets. Fgs?
Term of abuse.

As in "Fucking Emmets" shouted at us - Mum and two young teenagers minding our own business walking along a quiet road in Newquay and the reason we won't be going back.

Outdoorsygirl1 · 28/05/2024 07:32

I've been going to Carbis Bay/St Ives every year for 15 years. There has definitely been a shift since Covid.

For example I've started noticing large groups of people leaving litter on beaches which I just hadn't seen before.

There seems to be more of a nightlife than there was.

More large groups smoking, swearing being generally loud and rowdy.

danesch · 28/05/2024 07:32

I live in a Cornwall tourist town (not St Ives). The main change I've noticed over and since Covid is that it has got even busier.

I really dislike the 'the Cornish are unfriendly', 'northerners are downmarket' etc generalisations that threads like this produce. There are half a million people in Cornwall - some of them are friendly and some of them aren't. Like any other sample of half a million people. We're people, going about our lives, with our own concerns, daily joys and worries - a bit like you.

Maybe people in general have gone downmarket.

I was thinking that the whole country has gone a bit downmarket in behaviour lately.

Was a bit offended at that being a moss side girl!

So gone up market then

Yes this is it. Dare I say it but it's like people want Butlins

Pluviophile1 · 28/05/2024 07:39

I don't know if has gone downmarket. I do believe that it is massively overrated as a holiday destination. There are so many other more beautiful (and more welcoming) places in the UK to spend your well-earned break.

It's not at all. Its beautiful. Can't wait to visit!

What is wrong with having tattoos? Why is that relevant?

CurrentHun · 28/05/2024 07:40

Well the whole country is falling apart after 14 years of Tory austerity followed by lies and the whipping up of social division that is Brexit, then Covid. We’re still in a shocking cost of living crisis where thousands of families can’t afford to eat. Before this succession of Tory governments life wasn’t perfect, but in general we had roads that weren’t full of dangerous potholes, and NHS that you could access and food banks weren’t collecting in every supermarket. There was actually a strong government target to reduce child poverty which was succeeding.

Your mate must be on a wind up OP. Normal income people could never afford to holiday in Carbis bay- several hundred quid a night in the hotel there. Only the preserve of the rich.
