To think we are being lined up for something?

I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

Why do the road hauliers want to go on strike? It's usually about fuel prices. I don't think they are particularly high at the moment? It doesn't sound very convincing a reason.

It’s not the hauliers. It’s border control going on strike in France and the UK, which will cause huge delays. As a result a lot of drivers will rightfully refuse to come into the UK for a while at the risk of being stuck in queues needlessly and other ports will get oversubscribed and very busy.

Strikes are planned upto 31st August.

Really, what are the reasons for introducing it now, unless you mean it is because of the self serving, edge of the apocalypse, fear mongering politics the Conservative party like to indulge in to win elections?

The reasons for its introduction have been widely publicised.
Heres what Sunak said when it was originally put forward

Would just like to leave this encounter between Rishi and one of these potentially affected young people here: x.com/bestforbritain/status/1796565060892147762?s=46&t=ZRiOqYBPJdwGCarjKNzCeQ

He voted leave, he can fuck right off with bemoaning that young people don't have the opportunities they used to have.

My friend works for private healthcare. She said they received a delivery with enormous amount of masks and gloves, face shields, etc. (PPE). They even had to pay for storage as there were no more space at the basement to store it (and they have stuff "just in case" for at least 6 months all the time).
I believe there might be an outbreak of measles /new variant Covid, etc. I really don't think we'll be told unless the situation will become really serious.
I know our local nursing home stocking on PPE too.

marie3e · 05/06/2024 14:49

There is a new covid variant. They could have told us if that was why

Or bird flu or just more social experimentation to see how well behaved we are when told not to leave the house.

DeanElderberry · 05/06/2024 16:42

Maybe the minister in the relevant department just authorised buying far too much from their supplier pals back in 2020 and they want it out of warehousing now in case their party loses the election and they get asked awkward questions about the ongoing storage costs.

I read something about a meteor that’s due to just miss the earth in a few years, but that it’s actually due to hit but the governments aren’t telling us. My dp thinks I’m being ridiculous, I just hope he’s right!

WelshNerd · 05/06/2024 19:04

Has the thing happened yet? I’m worried it’ll happen but I won’t know. #fomo

Well we won't need to worry about Ukraine or Taiwan or national service then will we? Maybe Russia and China are the only govts who aren't aware

It's called Apophis. Due to pass by earth ten times closer than the moon (within the range of orbiting satellites) on Friday 13th April 2029. Discovered by Nasa in 2004 and, at the time, identified as one of the most hazardous asteroids that could impact Earth. The risk of an impact has since been suspiciously ruled out. . .

There’s nothing suspicious about it, its trajectory and behaviour was meticulously tracked and studied, leading scientists to be able to say that it won’t hit Earth for at least the next 100 years.

If the calculations are correct and it doesn't hit in 5 years, it's coming back round in 2036 and still has the potential to hit if it passes through a gravitational keyhole the first time around. This would change the orbit.

The impact would be equal to more than 1000 megatons of TNT, or the explosive yield of all the nuclear weapons we have put together.

Cue the recent DART mission, which according to Nasa is 'dedicated to investigating and demonstrating one method of asteroid deflection by changing an asteroid’s motion in space through kinetic impact'.

I remain deeply suspicious.

MagicFox · 06/06/2024 14:22

Well reassuring to know that it's being so well tracked and steps are being taken to think about a worst case scenario and how to avoid it

DyslexicPoster · 06/06/2024 20:03

I don't think we need to prep for an asteroid hit or things like Yellow stone blowing its top.

They are are extinction events. Like the South Sea anomaly you can't stop some things.

Neither are things I worry about and I'm a scientist.

Sadly @MagicFox I don't think a space rock weighing around 40 million tonnes and travelling approximately 28,000 miles per hour would be deterred by anything humans can currently throw at it.

I don't think we need to prep for an asteroid hit or things like Yellow stone blowing its top.

@DyslexicPoster This asteroid has the potential to create a lot of chaos and destruction on the planet, but it's relatively small at roughly 1200 feet, so wouldn't create an E.L.E.

Caplin · 06/06/2024 23:37

I used to work in government affairs for a big 4 supermarket chain durin Covid and brexit. Fucking shitshow thanks to government, literally no clue what they were catapulting us into (despite us telling them constantly for years). Lord Frost had no clue, utter dick! We would end most weeks with our head in our hands.

Right now you have Suez crisis, climate change, new Euro packaging legislation. So many things could cock up the supply chain. Those logistics guys are geniuses, just trust the process and we will be fine.

Everyone rush out and buy bog rolls quick.

Is this a thread where we have to flush out the mole, because my money’s on OP, no offence OP but your position is compromised! 😉

Now on a serious note I am really enjoying this thread, thank you OP for posting, and we never know, maybe we should all rush out to stock up on bog roll so we can shut in the light from our windows. Let’s hope we never need to.😬🤞

@marie3e
They've made a website 'Prepare'

prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

I only found out about it from someone's Twitter.

I wonder how much Tax the government make in three days of national panic buying…? Is that something I’m allowed to ask or will I be hung, drawn and quartered?!🥸

that’s my disguise pic above!

We spent a period of time living self sufficiently, but moved back to grid when we had kids and it was just too hard work. But always have a supply of food. We have huge sacks of grains and other things in big barrels... maybe enough food for a few months. We have a berkey water filter, solar panels with invertor that turns solar to 240v. Matches (making fire is quite difficult without a spark...), a big wood supply, wood burner that can be cooked on, and a huge amount of tools (such as chainsaw) which are battery operated and could charge from solar panel. It's not recently gathered in a worried panicked way, we just have those things from our previous life, but as a mum of three I definitely feel better knowing we can provide for our children in case of emergency for an extended periods of time (potentially indefinitely)

things do feel a bit unstable at the moment, the new surges of technology seems to be having a destabilising effect on societies around the world, who knows what's round the corner.

I’m guessing the chainsaw is for in case you get a mice attack!
No?….
