Dad ruining wife's half-marathon finish

Has anyone else seen this video?

Non-DM link

Brief synopsis: A dad stands by the half-marathon finish line with his young daughters. Crucially, he's standing in front of the finish ribbon. When he sees his wife about to win the race, he encourages the toddlers to intercept her with hugs. She has to dodge them to avoid knocking them over, finishes the race and celebrates. Dad throws up his arms in disgust at her choosing to win the race rather than stop to hug her daughters.

IMO this is the perfect example of a man trying to make his wife's achievements all about him, then blaming her for his ineptitude and her wanting to celebrate her own achievement. A mother is an individual in her own right.

I feel the same way about men who propose to their partners when they've won a race/accepted an award/ celebrating their graduation.

YABU - he's an amazing dad and the mum let her kids down by selfishly taking the win.

YANBU - he's a dick.

The Dad Is Totally To Blame For The Half Marathon Mom "Ignoring" Her Kids

A frustrating moment in sports is going viral after a dad allows their kids almost to ruin their mom's half marathon win.

YANBU

I am horrified. What an arsehole.

It's quite symbolic isn't it? A woman not being allowed to revel in her success and achievement without being reminded of 'her place' as a wife and a mother.

Exactly what I thought. Chilling.

I don't care if it was "planned", I would bet my last quid that it was HIS idea. Never forget your main role.

skeettch · 23/05/2024 21:26

Also annoyed by people calling her "marathon mom" no one in the world has completed a sub-2 marathon and the board behind her says 01:40;53

I suspect she's just completed an epic and very traily half marathon but IT IS NOT A MARATHON.

XelaM · 23/05/2024 21:27

Looks like she likes the bald guy more than her husband 😜

A bit off that she didn't go back after her win to celebrate with her family 🤷‍♀️

napody · 23/05/2024 21:27

Even if they had previously chatted about the toddlers finishing with her (daft idea for them getting trodden on by other runners but whatever) he should have read the situation and seen she clearly wanted to focus and finish ahead of green shirt dude! Agree:knob.

So do i!

Yeah he seems very arrogant doesn’t he. Does look at the danger he could have caused such as injury to his children. I hope he apologises but I bet he doesn’t

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 23/05/2024 21:28

I saw this on Britain's Next Top Model. A girl from Stoke on Trent won and her boyfriend decided to propose just after she won. He was such a twat for doing that. Coincidentally she was one of the only ones who didn't really succeed after despite being one of the most beautiful with a really unique look. I have always thought he scuppered her success in some way

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/05/2024 21:32

It's a narrow road, with a bike and more than one runner. Even if it was arranged, which I doubt because she looks pretty serious about running, it was shit parenting.

ShowOfHands · 23/05/2024 21:32

CobsNobs · 23/05/2024 20:45

She seems awfully pally with that guy.
I wonder if they engage in other forms of jogging!

Please don't do this.

35965a · 23/05/2024 21:36

I thought the video looked set up tbh. So many fake skit type videos these days. I don’t know, something just off about it to me.

abbey44 · 23/05/2024 21:41

Completely making it all about him, with no thought of his wife’s achievement (or the risk to the children)….seems almost spiteful.

i knew a man whose daughter was graduating and for some reason he was due to be awarded some paperwork relating to his own degree some thirty years earlier (can’t remember the details) - he opted to receive it at the same awards ceremony so they could “celebrate together”. All I could think was how mean of him that he couldn’t let his daughter have her moment of glory and achievement without trampling all over it. Could never unthink that afterwards and saw him in such a different light from then on. (It’s funny too, once you’ve seen that perspective you start to notice how many of their other behaviours follow the same pattern.)

This thread is surreal. I watched the footage and the dad is arms out trying to get the girls to NOT run out towards their mum. He isn’t pushing them into her path- he is trying to wrangle them to stay on sideline.

Yeah it wasn’t bright to stand before the finish, but the runner said that was the plan SHE had decided on.

It’s just a mistake they both did not think through on how hard it would be to restrain two excited little kids to not run towards their mum.

LemonySnickets · 23/05/2024 20:42

I've seen it. Very dangerous thing to do. The kids could have tripped a runner up (there was at least one other runner right behind her). And then there was a motorbike close behind too! Blokes an idiot.

This! Apart from anything else who encourages their little children to run in front of a motorbike is nuts.

You're watching a different video to me. Surely any decent parent knows how to keep a hand on the kids to stop them running out into a road. And it looks to me like he pushed them towards her.

I suspect only men get a pass on that one. Poor man trying his best...

He’s most likely someone she trains with and he’s proud of her success, he probably gets it more than her husband does.

I run quite a lot and I know it bores my partner when I talk about pb’s and the best kind of trainers. But other runners get it, so she probably wanted to celebrate with him over her husband. Especially if he does just see it as her little hobby as others have suggested.

Yeah, I’m totally like that, wouldn’t give a mum any slack whatsoever if her two young kids suddenly bolted away from her making her man finish a very important men’s race a second slower. 🤨

Chickenuggetsticks · 23/05/2024 22:08

Utter prick, I saw the video and he was definitely sabotaging. I’d be furious if my Dh H chucked DD in the path of someone trying to win a race, they could easily be trampled let alone if he tried to fuck up my race.

Yeah he was definitely acting like she was an arse for not stopping for the kids.

EmilyTjP · 23/05/2024 22:12

Jesus Christ. You’re all getting very worked up about this. Someone has posted above and said she was meant to finish the race with the kids but decided against it, which clearly he didn’t know.
I dont think he deserves to be called a fucking cunt.

3luckystars · 23/05/2024 22:15

I think he throws his hands up because the other spectators gave out to him. if you look you can see that people are really cross.

She seems so pumped up I doubt she even saw the children.

goodkidsmaadhouse · 23/05/2024 22:19

Seems unlikely that such a thing would be planned by an athlete who was in a position to win a half. I do shorter races, I’m not going to win any, but I tend to come top 10 and even lowly old I wouldn’t want to slow down at the end to run with a child. I absolutely love them jumping all over me after I cross the finish line though - so I also find it a bit weird that the kids weren’t encouraged to come straight round to the finish to celebrate with her.

Strange video all round and I agree with the PP who said goodness knows what the truth is, there are so many staged and fake videos
online now.

Riversideandrelax · 23/05/2024 22:21

What did he expect her to do? Pick them both up, one on each hip and keep running?
