And did you/the liar admit it when caught out or did you/they double down? Or have you got away with it?

Why don’t you start us off with yours

This won’t hurt a bit…

I briefly ‘dated’ a guy when I was 20 who pretended he had been to the doctor and they had found cancer in his blood. Story was bullshit from the beginning and I was so embarrassed for him that he had put it all in writing. It was on fb messenger so I could definitely unearth the texts too if I didn’t think I’d die of shame 🤣

He said the ‘discovery’ meant he needed his ex gf back as he needed support. I never messaged him again.

Oh yes, been told this fucker many many times 🤣

LizTruss · 23/05/2024 17:15

Well, where do I start...

OneTC · 23/05/2024 17:15

I once worked with someone who's entire life was a lie. Never encountered anyone quite like it.

She eventually left the job having scammed money off her boss to arrange the funeral of her dead mum (who wasn't dead) and her brother (who didn't exist)

Whoppers included but not limited to:

Earliest memory was seeing her grandad taken off a fishing boat by a shark. Off the Kent coast.

Due to be married to a guy, who fell off a roof and broke his back, so that she wouldn't waste the very expensive dress she decided she would marry someone else a couple of weeks later instead. He died before that happened

Was a professional wrestler on TV in America. Had never left the UK.

Was banned from Wales for carving her dead daughter name into the arm of the person who killed her. Also did time for this. Occasionally flouted this ban and used to be escorted back to England under armed guard

vidflex · 23/05/2024 17:17

I was briefly married to a gay man in my early 20's

I was warned he'd had relationships with men before me but he swore it wasn't true.

Found him with a man.

RishiSunak · 23/05/2024 17:19

I could tell you but unfortunately I changed my phone and all my WhatsApp messages just disappeared. 😶

SummaLuvin · 23/05/2024 17:22

When you’re 12 in school and they say bad skin/acne is just when you’re going through puberty 🙃

5degreestonight · 23/05/2024 17:23

I had an ex friend who was a compulsive liar. She told me she had a gym session and would then come to mine at 7 … gets to 7:30 and then 8 and I messaged and called worried multiple times and heard nothing at all.

Next day she posted a selfie on her story saying “off to work”. And had the audacity to be annoyed that I was annoyed she hadn’t at the very least let me know she was 1. Ok and 2. Wasn’t coming over.

She was also a colleague who lied about having cancer and “fluid on the brain”, had days off work for it and get her eyelashes done.

Awful person.

I have very boring lies, like "I didn't break that", "I'm leaving now" or (to the kids) " this is too spicy, you wouldn't like it".

By contrast, I know some people who have lied about winning awards, had whole relationships in secret or made up jobs on their CVs. I would be in to much fear of being caught out, but the audacity of some people is amazing!

I got texts from the bloke I was seeing, pretending not to be the bloke I was seeing, warning me off the bloke I was seeing. I think he was trying to inflame my passion by pretending there were loads of women after him.

I knew it was him because he couldn't spell or punctuate to save his life & in exactly the same way in both "identities". I told him he was a good shag but I was a tad too intelligent for the laughable pretence. He was so hurt that I knew the texts were from him & how. And no, Dean, the "other woman" wasn't dyslexic & neither were you. You jus cudnt spel fir sheet!

Hollowvoice · 23/05/2024 17:37

Ex used to say he had "protection" from the IRA... Something about having done someone a favour with a taxi (I forget the details now) so he could call anytime for help. Eventually admitted it was all a lie around the same time the "wrong house" knock on the door turned out to be his OW.

splatmouse · 23/05/2024 17:42

I went out with a guy who told me he'd had cancer and the treatment left him with a small penis. He later confessed he'd never had cancer.

Spendysis · 23/05/2024 17:44

Used to work with some who pretended to be dating and then married Maurice gibb from the bgees

LlynTegid · 23/05/2024 17:44

A family member returned to the UK in their early sixties who was in poor health. Wanted to drive, I advised them of the HGV medical requirements not the standard driving ones, knowing they would fail. They accepted this without checking as it was pre-internet.

Probably saved them being down a ditch dead or seriously injured.

Spendysis · 23/05/2024 17:51

My sister permanently lies over money

i will pay you back being the best one

My expenses have been delayed I’ve forgotten my bank card I don’t know how to use Apple Pay

I bought it using money from my compensation claim that she never got a penny from she paid using my dm debit card

need the money for life saving bowel reconstruction surgery that was actually a gastric bypass

mum knew I borrowed the money from her she must of forgotten

just a few on many lies over the years

BirthdayRainbow · 23/05/2024 17:52

My h told me he was doing something specific at work that meant he had to sleep there. This has happened before and was 100% the truth.

This time he was fucking someone else.

This is hilarious 😂

Mine was from a boy I was dating when I was a teenager. He rode a scrambler bike and insisted that he could get up to 150mph on it. When he started car driving lessons he said he was out doing some practice when some undercover police got him to chase the criminal that they were after, because they'd seen how good a driver he was and they wanted someone to take over the driving while they did other important police stuff. He told my parents this, my dad managed to escape the room and was silently laughing his arse off while my mum was going "oh really, how interesting" trying to keep a straight face.

“If you just ignore the bullies, they’ll go away”

ThisThreadCouldOutMe · 23/05/2024 18:02

"I'll love you forever, no matter what" lying bastard.

Also know a woman who lies about everything.
Years ago when MM went missing she said she'd had the police round and that they'd DNA tested her DD. Apparently they were doing it to all blonde haired girls of the right age to rule them out.
A couple of years later she accused her neighbour of sexually abusing the same DD. She admitted that one was a lie when they wanted to examine her DD.
Then she told us she was pregnant with triplets. She apparently lost one at a few weeks. The second apparently died at 36 weeks and she "had it removed" at the hospital. The third one still hasn't arrived, so she's been pregnant for approximately 12 years now.

Username2101 · 23/05/2024 18:03

Ex - I hate those type of men who cheat.

Guess not that much since he ran off with his 22 year old secretary.

Elleherd · 23/05/2024 18:03

Member of a group of friends went missing leaving everything behind.
We were very worried, and tried to find out what had happened to her.
Months later from friends 'boyfriend': - 'So sorry to have to tell you, friend died. It was a sad, nasty, end. (details followed) You were her only real friends, she really cared about you and talked about you lots.'
Later came 'In the horrible circumstances what was left of her remains were cremated and ashes deposed of by council as parents refused them.'

A horrible bleak ending to someone who'd talked about having a bleak life.
We were a bit shell shocked.

I'm a maker. A group of us decided on creating a small bright stained glass window and organized for it to go to a specific ugly place with little income that she'd mentioned as being grim but having helped her.
We had a small unveiling/kinda memorial ceremony, and left feeling that we'd left a bit of color somewhere grey, in her name as the tiny thing we could do.

About nine months after that, she got of a bus in front of me, and as good as ran away while I scraped my jaw of the floor.

TigerRag · 23/05/2024 18:05

"she's my ex girlfriend"

I had a friend who lied about being a paramedic and his son having Autism.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 23/05/2024 18:08

Not my story bit this was a fairly big lie.

When the police called to a friend's apartment looking for his flatmate, the flatmate told him it was probably due to an unpaid speeding fine or parking ticket.

He was later arrested on suspicion of murder and found guilty in court.
