The general feeling on social media is that the Tories will be obliterated in the upcoming GE. AIBU to not be surprised if they get voted in again?

I'll be voting Labour as I have always done.

Fuck the Tories.

Bumblebee907 · 23/05/2024 08:08

Labour but not expecting much really. Just better than the tories

margotsdevil · 23/05/2024 08:20

Thanks @Cornishpasty342 - really helpful. I agree with everything you said as well.

It depends what Labour promises. If they insist on sticking to the Tory spending plans - tax cuts and loopholes for the rich pay cuts in real terms for the poor - and supporting arms sales to Israel then I'll have to spoil my ballot paper.

Aka not vote

spoiled papers literally go in the bin. A waste of everyone’s time.

Beezknees · 23/05/2024 08:34

Labour. Always have.

Spoilt ballot here. 1st time in my 62 years

Literally save yourself the time and just don’t show up.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 23/05/2024 08:41

SNP for me, unless Scottish Labour grow a back bone, admit the union doesn't work for Scotland and promise to facilitate another independence referendum.

Coastalcreeksider · 23/05/2024 08:41

I'm pretty sure whatever I vote, it will stay Conservative (Braverman) 🙁

Spoilt ballot papers don't 'go in the bin', they are recorded.

In the past I have been a conservative voter. This time I think we just need a change. The tories need time to regroup get some better people through the ranks and reset. I'll be voting liberal as they are most likely to reseat the conservative in my area.

Imonaplane · 23/05/2024 09:08

Conservative.

They are recorded, but they are also fairly pointless. My friend counts votes - the rude ones give the counters a laugh, they might get together to puzzle over whether someone intended a vote or were just protesting, they keep things a bit more interesting on a long night... but they don't have any effect on the democratic process.

Errors · 23/05/2024 09:27

I wonder what the outcome would be if people voted based on actual policy rather than voting for the same party they have always done, or letting their kids/dogs decide etc.
Most people won’t even read a summary of any party’s manifesto and will go vote anyway. What’s the point.

KimberleyClark · 23/05/2024 09:28

Labour.

I still remember the 1993 election where both opinion polls and the exit polls on the night suggested a Labour victory but they didn’t win.

Marjoriefrobisher · 23/05/2024 09:54

It would be better for the tories overall to lose because they do need a reset as others have said.
but not better for me. Hmmm.

SpaceLaser · 23/05/2024 09:55

I’d like to vote Green but they are having an antisemitism crisis so it will have to be Labour.

weareallcats · 23/05/2024 09:58

I hate them all - utter wankers, every single one.

I live in a constituency where it actually matters (swaps over pretty much every GE - went from CON to LAB in the last election), so feeling quite conflicted. Will almost certainly vote Labour, but not without reservations.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/05/2024 10:01

IMO the Tories will be slaughtered.

Labour come nowhere in our constituency - it’s nearly always a toss up between Con/LD - even recount territory. I don’t imagine it’ll be nearly so close this time though.

I suppose I shall have to vote LD, though I don’t exactly hold them in high esteem. I won’t waste a vote on the Greens* or anyone else, though I’m always tempted by the Monster Raving Loony - if there is one.
*Certainly not after their stance on the male/female biology issue.

" Don't let perfect be the enemy of good"

But Labour are not any good either - the Labour Party of 2024 is unrecogniseable to me compared to the Labour Party that I grew up with in 70s and 80s

How about the Labour party who you witnessed in between 1997 to 2010?

Most people won’t even read a summary of any party’s manifesto.

..and will go about their business saying to anyone who will listen that the party don't have any policies and that they're all the same.

Samlewis96 · 23/05/2024 10:06

rsmama27 · 22/05/2024 19:33

Guess you're voting Tory then as nobody would openly admit to doing so.

Why? Voting is a private thing. Does mean you are voting for a particular party

ExhaustedHousewife · 23/05/2024 10:17

I'm in political no man's land, with 2 daughters I can't bring myself to vote Labour but the tories are rotten.im so down hearted about the whole thing.

Arlanymor · 23/05/2024 10:25

I’m waiting for the manifestos, but most likely Plaid. A big part of my work is public affairs so I think I am already fairly clued up, but need to see the big picture policies before I finally decide. I’m not a one issue voter but I do know the things that matter most to me, so I’ll be comparing each party on those. We’re currently Labour… well actually we’re independent because my MP is administratively suspended. If he runs again I cannot bring myself to vote for him and the Tories were only a few thousand votes behind him at the last election, but equally it would be a cold day in hell before I voted for them either. So Plaid it is and my vote will mean absolutely nothing due to FPTP.

Rockthecasbah1 · 23/05/2024 10:29

@Damnloginpopup I don't know is why but this made me belly laugh. It was so unexpected 😂

Needed that laugh after the week I've had

Absolutely. I know people will say they’re all lies and they won’t keep promises and they maybe right but what else do we have to go on?
I think this opinion of ‘not wasting your vote’ is a bad one. I personally think that if people don’t want to understand what each party is promising to deliver and try and vote based on that, or maybe even which local MP might be best to vote for then they shouldn’t vote.

I have a few friends that aren’t interested and don’t want to be - that’s up to them but better than blindly voting on tradition or on having no idea what you’re voting for.
