AIBU to feel this will happen un a Labour government???

From what I see and IMO, the Labour lot on the whole believe in aspirations but only for themselves

Older people will vividly recall the the hideous tax rates under labour - between 1974 and 1979 the paye tax rate was up to 80%. Then there was a tax on top of that for so-called higher earners of 18%. This equated to 98%

I don't trust Labour, nor do I trust the Torties. Liberals, IMO they will sell your soul down the river to get a sniff at number 10

As I said I don't trust any of them. But if you are working, worked hard, been prudent with your money and have savings, decent private pensions in the pipeline and possibly a property or two that you have worked for, for your retirement and not wasting your money and want to leave some behind for your kids, GC etc rather than throw it away on the hand to mouth life - then if Labour comes into power, you are totally and truly F'd

Labour rants they will do this and the other - the last time they almost bankrupted England,

If you are working hard being prudent with your money and made sacrifices to send your kids to a private school as many Labour MP's do on pay at almost 100k - they are eager to put VAT on this part of education. The MPS whose pay is a couple of times above average pay will be able to afford it - will you??

Me, my family, relatives have all worked hard, not on benefits, never lived in social housing and not thrown our money away but been prudent to be self-sufficient and pay our taxes to support our country. If you are like us, then trust me, under Labour, you will be shafted hard.

I'm not sure if I will vote tory or an independent but this circus of Tories and Labour taking turns to lie to the nation is not on and yes, most politicians lie and will lie and say anything to get into number 10 and if your feel that is not true, then you must be on another planet

What ridiculous hyperbole. Yes we pay shitloads of tax too - have a fucking Blue Peter badge 🙄. If people are ashamed to admit that they vote Tory maybe they should have a think about that - blaming Labour voters for Tory embarrassment is fucking ludicrous.

People who vote Tory - I don’t think they are ashamed to, but just don’t want to have to deal with the nasty comments you get. For example I’m a teacher i voted conservative last time, one member of staff literally said I was homophobic infront of everyone in my staff room because I voted that way, I am far from homophobic- have batted for the other side at one time, they made me feel absolutely crap and embarrassed I front of the office, - I didn’t say anything to the senior leadership team and it would have caused more issues, when I was at university- the same thing- literally stick your head above the parapet and get branded a serial killer or something, it’s a shame that many just don’t want a healthy debate these days and just want to “ cancel you” or shout you down. So yeah. I keep my views to myself now as I don’t feel like I can get any positive discussion going from it.

I’m one of those ‘noisy fuckers’ with kids in private school. Cue all the wrath and hate…
But what no one in the state sector seems to mention is that the state sector - already ailing with massive class numbers - will be flooded with far more kids whose parents can no longer afford private school.
And anyone who thinks the money from extra fees will be pumped back into education is completely deluded:

  1. it won’t touch the sides
  2. money often gets ‘redistributed’ - do you really believe Labour will put it all into the state education sector
  3. class sizes will get larger and larger
  4. your children will have to mix with our horrendously spoilt ones
So ultimately you lose too….

Just pay your fees and stop expecting subsidies.

Private schools don’t have to pass on the full cost to parents. Many won’t need to.

Not every private school will close so the idea of a flood is 🙄 Labour are not abolishing private schools. Sadly.

Pupil roll numbers are expected to fall in the next few years anyway so the capacity will be there.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/05/2024 21:31

@ghostyslovesheets us too - living in Denmark showed me the difference and whilst not everything there would work here - partly because of scale etc - some things would but it works on a mentality that many Brits would find hard to swallow- particularly some over 60s ( and I'm 62) high tax, high services and far more things covered off out taxation rather than paying at point of use.

FangsForTheMemory · 22/05/2024 21:31

How much are the Tories paying you to post this tripe?

Paul2023 · 22/05/2024 21:31

As an ex forces person under the previous Labour government I wasn’t a massive fan of Blair or Brown.
But I remember public services seemed better funded , doctors appointments were available and public services functioned better generally.

1997- 2007 seemed like a financial boom.Until 2008.

Life was never really the same after the 2008 crash though was it ?

Interesting because I’ve had the opposite experience! People think I’m some sort of communist for not voting Tory (I live in a very safe Tory constituency).

Shall we swap! 😂, yep real shame Isn’t it that people from all political spectrums can’t just have a good chat these days without making it personal

😂😂😂 the irony is - when you talk to people on opposite sides, you realise that yes, we all want similar things. It (not always) just comes down to how it’s paid for (tax vs we pay as individuals).

I personally believe that we need a mixed economy - a balance of state, private and charity and that we, as individuals, need a bit more of a say in how things are done. Nothing fancy! Or communist.

Subsidies - what subsidies? By not putting any strain on the state sector how are we being subsidised.

So the alternative is...............

Because if you say Tory then you are happy that millions will be shafted. Royally shafted.

Is that better or worse than Labour's illegal war that cost the lives of millions as well as mass immigration?
They are all useless, but why people with any scruples vote labour is beyond me... too much blood on their hands.

Not sure you can seriously say that the Tories aren’t also war mongers. The Iraq war was one that we knew about but if you go back in history, the Tories aren’t exactly without blood on their hands.

I don't remember Tony Blair's government bankrupting the UK? (or England).

I do remember Liz Truss almost crashing the economy.

Dibblydoodahdah · 22/05/2024 21:39

Believeitornot · 22/05/2024 21:24

What are you talking about?

The Tories have sold off key infrastructure to the highest bidder. We are paying for it now.

They cut key public services to the bone which meant that when Covid hit, they panicked and threw money (at their friends mainly) to try and cover. It meant when Brexit hit, they didn’t have enough staff so had to panic employ people to fix their mess.

I think you’re getting in a muddle, as you’re so keen to see Rishi Sunak carry on as PM.

Not everything bad is the fault of the Tories - but a hell of a lot is.

I’m talking about inflation which has resulted in a cost of living crisis. I work for a global company and I can tell you that the most often asked question at “all company” meetings over the past couple of years has been are we getting a pay rise because of inflation. It’s not a UK phenomen.

And where did I say that I would be voting for Rishi?! That was your assumption because I have criticised past Labour governments.

AppleKatie · 22/05/2024 21:39

Odd to put VOTE LABOUR in your subject if you don’t want people to actually do it 😂

as it happens id cheerfully pay more tax if I could see a doctor or dentist when I need one.

Flooding!😂Very few kids are privately educated and v few will be going into state as a result of parents quite rightly paying vat on private education.

Are you happy to continue have a VAT kickback on any cakes that you buy because they are also VAT exempt?! It’s not a kickback or a subsidiary, it’s an exemption. Just like many other things are exempt from VAT.

AmpleFatball · 22/05/2024 21:43

Dibblydoodahdah · 22/05/2024 21:19

The lowest rate for anyone earning up to £4,500 was 35% so much higher than today’s rates. The next band was 38% so on until you got to 83%. There was a brain drain as a result.

But the 35% basic rate, while high by modern standards, was lower than in previous decades.

The brain drain is more commonly associated with the 50s and 60s. The emigration rate dropped in the 70s.
