No, I don’t think a Labour government will set the world on fire, and I’m not particularly excited by the prospect but BLOODY HELL I can’t wait to see the back of this lot.

Stick them all on a plane to Rwanda.

I’ve got everything crossed that Rees Mogg in particular loses his seat.

People were saying exactly the same on here about Labour landslide at the last election, and look how well that turned out

Who was saying this @SoEmbarrassed2024? The polls had the Conservatives leading Labour throughout 2019 before they won. I had a look on Mnet and couldn't see anything predicting a Labour landslide. Many Labour supporters didn't want to vote for Corbyn and a lot of people just wanted to "Get Brexit done".

LakeTiticaca · 23/05/2024 12:23

I don't wish to ruin anyone's day but I hope everyone clearly understands that all the parties piss in the same pot.
If and when Labour sieze power (and I'm not a fan of either party) It wont be too long before some MP or other is exposed for dirty deeds.
Trust me, it will happen 🤣🤣🤣

Feelingstrange2 · 23/05/2024 12:30

I'd question that the degree of the dirty deeds will be minscule compared with the sw we are hearing at the COVID inquiry (which still isn't finished!).

And will they trash the economy like Truss did?

And will they care so little for poverty that it will continue to increase exponentially?

I'm happy to give the alternative a try rather than face yet another 4 years of this debacle.

noblegiraffe · 23/05/2024 12:41

"seize power" is quite telling though. I think you mean 'are elected'.

Don't forget the Tories massively increased minimum wage

Feelingstrange2 · 23/05/2024 12:56

@youngones1

Thanks for the full list of what the Tories have done well.

No need to split hairs 🤣

noblegiraffe · 23/05/2024 12:57

The Tories have kept the threshold earnings for Free School Meals the same as in 2017, despite massive inflation since then, meaning that hundreds of thousands of kids who would have qualified for a free meal in 2017 don't get one.

And during covid, they had to be repeatedly shamed by Marcus Rashford into feeding children who did qualify for Free School Meals during the holidays.

The party who likes to see kids go hungry.

I think they’ve known their goose was cooked since Truss was allowed to briefly wrench the helm into her greasy palms.

Seize power? WTF?🤯 The hyperbole really is something else. No one's seizing anything. We're having a GE.

Can't wait for the end of "Five years of chaos under Ed Miliband".

Oh, and OP, you forgot the "criminal" part from "corrupt, criminal, incompetent fuckers".

Dh and I have struggled all the way through this conservative gov to raise our children on very low incomes and now that last year Dh miraculously got a new job with a huge – to us – increase in wage, I’m fully expecting most of it to be taken in tax under Labour.

noblegiraffe · 23/05/2024 13:14

Do you understand how tax bands work?

tax increases would be the case for both labour and tory governments. The british public want a free at the point of access health service and someone has to pay for it. as well as the triple lock. We have an ageing population. Its an inevitability and if someone tells you otherwise they are lying to you. We actually need to pay more tax to balance the budget as the deficit is not sustainable. Obviously it would be better if they taxed assets instead of income but until they figure out a coherent way to tax rich people, working people are on the hook cos its so much easier to tax us.

DH and i cumulatively pay more than 30k in tax every year but we will not dream of voting tory. paying more tax to maintain our health service is a lot cheaper than going private, we are doing fertility testing with the NHS (though we go private for GP appointments and minor procedures) and we don't want to lose that. The nhs isn't great but at least with more funding it would probably not go extinct.

Private GP appointments can be £70 per appointment, would not like the average person to pay for that.

The tories just gave us some national insurance back.

we have reluctantly spent it on private health insurance as I can’t rely on the NHS as much as I would like.

believe me I would MUCH rather give that money directly to the NHS rather than the private sector so that everyone benefits.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/05/2024 13:43

Here it’s always a toss up between Con/LD - Labour come nowhere. It’s gone to a recount before - doubt it’ll be nearly so close this time, though.

I’ll have to vote LD, despite their stance on basic human biology, and I’ve never been very impressed by them anyway. I can’t even think of voting Green - the basic human biology issue again.

In the past I did once vote for the Monster Raving Loony bloke - when equally pissed off with the whole useless shower of them, not sure there’ll even be a MRL candidate this time though.

C1N1C · 23/05/2024 13:48

Knowing the world, the Tories will wreck everything before they leave so that Labour look like they're crap. Then we'll vote the Tories back in just as they're getting the hang of it.

1dayatatime · 23/05/2024 13:51

@frankentall

"You mean like now?"

Just because taxation levels are currently high it doesn't mean that they can't go higher still.

7th reply. Not bad.

But are you willing to make this the hill you die on??

It's a tiny issue overall amongst the NHS /social care crisis and education.

I'm completely for safe spaces for women...what we need his heavier laws for sex offenders who clearly are just using the self identity in order to access women to sexually assault.

Baneofmyexistence · 23/05/2024 14:13

I’ve just had a conversation with someone who thinks we should have Boris back as PM so although I very much agree with the OP and will skip into the voting booth to tick a non-Tory box I think it might sadly still be a close run thing in my area!

hamstersarse · 23/05/2024 14:18

I don't especially mind Kier Starmer as a person, he is pretty ordinary, but totally uninspiring and I am unable to articulate anything that he stands for - what are his values, beliefs? Who the hell knows, but worse than him are some of the people in his potential cabinet who are an absolute shit show.

Angela Rayner for one is a revolting aggressive childish vindictive woman. She is way too irrational and emotional to be making any decisions that matter to anyone's life. I can't see how anyone can have any respect for her at all, she behaves abominably, consistently.

IMHO I think the Tories would have a chance of getting back in, such is the general patheticness of Labour, but Reform will steal the Tory votes and Labour will get in on a decent majority.

Then we will all be babied and patronised for 4 years and all innovation and industriousness will be seen as an immoral act.

Why? Reeves has been totally explicit that she’s not raising taxes.

1dayatatime · 23/05/2024 14:33

The policy driver for me would be the party that offered to invest the most money in to education and young people - sadly I don't see any party with such an agenda mainly because young people can't or don't vote.
