No, I don’t think a Labour government will set the world on fire, and I’m not particularly excited by the prospect but BLOODY HELL I can’t wait to see the back of this lot.

Stick them all on a plane to Rwanda.

I’ve got everything crossed that Rees Mogg in particular loses his seat.

@SchoolDramas is spot on with her list however. And I'd add prisons so overcrowded that they are now letting prisoners out early, and police forces have been told not to arrest offenders for a certain list of previously arrest-able crimes as there is no room in the system for them. Both courts and prisons overwhelmed and now the Police have been told not to police. We are literally lawless due to lack of governmental foresight and competence.
That has slid by quietly in the news the last few days. I can't believe the lack of fuss being made about it.

Bushwhacked20 · 23/05/2024 06:19

Amen to the title.

Though God knows the outgoing monsters have made bloody sure they've not only scorched the UK earth they're leaving behind but salted it as well.

I'm not a huge fan of Starmer, particularly given his recent decision to accept hard right sudden suspiciously timed converts on the political road to Damascus. I can't bear the Yellow Turncoat Party and I don't think the Greens stand a chance in a world where we don't have PR.

But I cannot wait to hopefully see these Tory miscreants rot in hell. Though England will do for starters.

Tel12 · 23/05/2024 06:23

We should hold the election next week. Doesn't matter what they say or promise they are on the way out

Whenwillitgetwarm · 23/05/2024 06:36

Not only are they evil, they are pathetic. Who arranges an outdoor speech without checking the weather forecast? Not one staffer with an umbrella nearby. If that’s an example of their operation then no wonder we’re in the shit.

I suspected for sometime that all of the competent number 10 staffers had quit. In their place are bunch of chinless grad tech bro yes men.

DH and I are taking the day off on July 5th. On election night we’ll be downing a shot for every Tory who loses their seat, double for a cabinet minister.

I’m not overly enthusiastic about Labour and have one of my DC in private school (other state) but this is for the greater good. Bring it on!

I don't think it will be the landslide people think, there are many voters like me who are currently 'homeless' no one has won my vote yet.

There is also a very silent majority like my parents who will never vote Labour.

You have a point. I remember coming on here before the Brexit vote and thinking it was a done deal we would stay in the EU because the majority of posts wanted that. Mumsnet isn't necessarily representative of the electorate as a whole.

Mumnset isn't representative, but polling data, which takes care to be representative, have had Labour with a massive lead that hasn't budged for aeons.

The brexit result was within the margin of error of the representative polling. And MN was always going to be more anti brexit because of its demographic. I don’t think there’s a single poll that has a Tory victory within it’s margin of error and there are increasingly few demographics where the Tories aren’t haemorrhaging support.

Self id was NOT brought in by the Tories at all. May wanted it but it was dumped. The GRA however was brought in under Labour and Dodds considers it one of their finest achievements.

May and Dodds - two women as well.

Oh mate, it works exactly like that.

Oh “mate” no it doesn’t. voting against Rishi because you didn’t like his predecessor is daft.

I am old enough to remember Labour being in power twice. I had such high hopes for Blair, he was an excellent speaker and I believed every word he said. I learnt my lesson and have been disapointed ever since. I and all my family and politically savy friends will be voting for Reform. I cannot vote for any of those mainstream clowns.

Blair was an excellent speaker

Blair generally delivered what he said though. If you agreed with what he said then you probably liked him. A bit like Thatcher - you either agreed with him politicially or you didn't.

His problem was he didn't really care about the working class, backed most of what Thatcher did and her destructive policies, let immigration get out of control and made a massive misjudgement in Iraq which was his downfall.

Was certainly a lot better than the shitshow of the last handful of Tory leaders though, but he didn't do enough to stop the social rot that set in with Thatcher.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 23/05/2024 08:31

I think this election will be money (or love of money) versus humanitarian issues in the minds of most voters, but they're bound up together so it will be difficult to see the wood for the trees depending on what is "promised" and by whom. While I'd rather chew my own arms off than vote Tory, I'm otherwise politically homeless.

And frankly my cynicism is so great I have sod all faith in the system and those operating it.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/05/2024 08:34

I'm wondering if Sunak has such a massive ego he assumes he will get back In easily or if he's just had enough because the plotters are out for his blood and want him replaced with yet another PM.

A lot of people won't vote Labour because Starmer is going to bring back the life time pension allowance.

Oh mate, the Tories change Prime Minister at the drop of a hat and they have shown that they are the party who will choose Liz Truss, the most obviously unsuitable candidate for PM, if she promises them tax cuts. Self-interest over country every time. Who would they pick for us once Rishi finally reaches the no confidence letter threshold (that may have already happened)? Jonathan Gullis because he said he’d buy them a beer?

The Labour Party chose Jeremy Corbyn as their last leader, an antisemite who supported terrorism and had no clue about economic reality. By your bizarre logic, people shouldn’t vote for Labour on that basis. Labour also changed their leader last time they were in power.

so maybe we choose on the basis of what is in front of us now, instead of harking back to previous leaders we didn’t like. And as I said, not much difference between them.

Stoptherideiwanttogetoff24 · 23/05/2024 08:51

I think you’re unreasonable to think things will ever improve as all politicians are basically useless.

noblegiraffe · 23/05/2024 09:00

Yes, and he has now been kicked out of the party and will have to stand as an independent, so it’s clear that Starmer has made an effort to show that the party has changed since then. What have the Tories done to show they have changed since Truss last year? And since Boris, they’ve had a parade of appalling scandals where they have not removed the whip or sacked the MP in question.

I will be voting Reform as will many family, friends and work colleagues.

Both the Tories and Labour have together completely trashed this country.

Time to give another party a go.

<runs and hides behind sofa 👀>

Brilliant idea. Anything that splits the Tory vote works well. There’s little to no real talent in either party and they’re almost interchangeable at this point. Whatever works to get those bastards in power out.

1dayatatime · 23/05/2024 09:11

@noblegiraffe

I think if could time travel to Mumsnet 2029 General Election then we would also be reading posts along the lines of

"I genuinely thought a Labour Government would be a different - let's get rid of these incompetent fuckers now".

That's not a glowing endorsement of the Conservatives but a sad recognition that very little will improve and our slow managed decline will continue.

The problem is that the policies that would make a real improvement would be a guaranteed vote loser.

Tiredalwaystired · 23/05/2024 09:29

I’m already geared for little tangible change in the community as there is no money.

What I am hoping for as part of the turnaround is a party that has integrity and creates a degree of trust with the public. think if Labour do win they’ll have to dial down the promises as they just can’t deliver - certainly not in four years. The country is too much in the shit to offer a magic wand solution. But I would like to see them listening to public sector workers and make meaningful change where possible to improve those services where possible, through policy if not through finances.
