Of course, everyone has to do something, so this is light-hearted.

But which jobs would be red flags for you and you can't imagine going out with someone who does this?

Mine would be-

Tory MP/aide/minister- or anything to do with the Tory party
Scaffolder
Stripper
Porn star
PT/fitness instructor/gym owner
Nightclub owner/ manager

Interesting to hear yours!

Why is gynaecologist such a popular choice for the list?

I’d have thought a gynae came with a mumber of benefits…no?

pontipinemum · 21/05/2024 14:34

Farmer - I married one 😂 at least he isn't dairy and we get away from time to time. But farm = life. Not just a job. It's marrying a full life style

I couldn't be with someone who had no drive. As in happy to be on the dole and never work, between jobs is fine happens most of us.

Politician - any party
Police
Fisher man - the smell

Men that work in offices never really floated my boat either and that would have been an easy place for me to meet someone. Before DH my LTR was an electrician

MountCaramel · 21/05/2024 14:37

There's nobody left to date after reading through everyone's suggestions!

Knitgoodwoman · 21/05/2024 14:38

I really fancy men in uniform, I’ve dated police, military, ex military, pilot etc I can see they’re not popular here, more to go around 😄

I love how calm they are in a crisis and responsible. I like to know someone can handle themselves should the need arise!

For me it would be influencers or investment bankers.

SeriaMau · 21/05/2024 14:39

Certified (not chartered) accountant

Anyone who’s a professional benefits scrounger

That is an oxymoron.
I am on benefits, so clearly not a professional.
People can not date me based on that, and that is ok. But there is s much more to me than my job (or lack of it).

5128gap · 21/05/2024 14:40

Abattoir worker
Butcher
Bailiff/debt collector
Vicar
Landlord
Armed forces

SeriaMau · 21/05/2024 14:41

Bumblebeestiltskin · 21/05/2024 12:54

Tory MP (or any other right wing party)
Dairy farmer
Pig/cattle/poultry farmer (anything in animal agriculture, basically)
Beekeeper
Riding teacher
Podcast bro
Slaughterhouse worker
Butcher

I'm only interested in left wing vegans, anyway, so anyone in any of those jobs would be discounted straight away anyway 😂

Oh, and police!

Edited

Beekeepers. Yes, they are right SOBs. And bees aren’t much better.

Totally petty , but anyone who works with drains !

Now... the two young chaps with their pressure hoses and camera who came to sort out the tree roots that were blocking my drains were handsome, charming, polite and efficient - if I were 30 years younger...

They did both say that they don't do the big sewers, the ones you can walk through!

BobbyBiscuits · 21/05/2024 14:54

@XenoBitch yeah, I was ignoring that one. I stated I'm on benefits myself. Idk about who these scroungers are? Openly faking not having a job, or debilitating illnesses? That's just a dishonest person, not a profession.

Anything corporate/big 4. I'm not into wage slave overworkers.

Totally agree.

whirlyhead · 21/05/2024 15:10

Accountant
Anyone who works for HMRC
Military
A member of the royal family (shudder)

Pickingmyselfup · 21/05/2024 15:12

Not many but off the top of my head...

Anyone who works stupidly long/antisocial hours meaning we would never see each other
An MP

I would give anyone a fair shot to be honest, I'm not perfect, I'm a waitress earning minimum wage although my hours are "normal" hence someone in the same industry with irregular hours just wouldn't work. If I still worked shifts I can imagine someone else working shifts would suit.

BobbyBiscuits · 21/05/2024 15:20

Thanks everyone for their posts!

It's really interesting to see quite a lot of things repeatedly come up.

I think it's often down to how your morals don't align, or you'd feel you'd have little in common in terms of interest. Or that we feel the person must lack compassion etc. Also working hours seem to play a big part.

I think authority figures in general (police, military etc) would probably put me off more than a gym owner really.

Or people who seem to have lots of money but you don't really know where it comes from...

I suspect it's because he would look at fannies all day long but I really don't know. My gynae was married to a midwife, so I suppose it was something they had a mutual interest in 🤣

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 21/05/2024 15:43

Policeman is the only hard no for me I think.

I've known (not biblically) fisherman and builders and they don't smell, The seem more careful about hygiene because of what they do.

Interesting to hear yours!

my list is pretty similar to yours but I'd add boxer. And any sports where people get repeatedly hit on/hurt the head. they end up with brain damage and other such things very early on in life.

ObliviousCoalmine · 21/05/2024 15:57

Traffic warden
PIP assessor
Scaffolder (all the ones I know are a nightmare)
Surgeon
Porn (if they were male, I'd date a woman who did porn)
Trawler fisherman (couldn't cope with the stress and worry)
Police (again, only if they were male. I'd probably date a female police officer).
A Tory (job, opinion, whatever).

ObliviousCoalmine · 21/05/2024 15:58

Oh, actually.

Bailiff.
Bouncer.
Anything in security.

ClivetheDestroyer · 21/05/2024 16:30

I personally think that the career that you choose is generally a big part of your life and reflects your values, so there are a LOT that I would rule out.
That said, if someone had fallen into something convenient and non-morally wrong (eg accountant) but had a good personality I wouldn't hold that against them.
But I do think that how you choose to spend the majority of your time says a lot about you as a person, and if you were say a used car salesman I can't think that we'd have much in common!

As a PP says most of the people I've dated were at least degree-educated "professionals". Not to be too much of a snob but I'd want someone who can challenge me intellectually.

Thriving30 · 21/05/2024 16:36

Anyone who works in a slaughterhouse
Butcher
Surgeon
Police

KreedKafer · 21/05/2024 16:37

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 21/05/2024 12:51

I don't know if you personally eat meat, but if you do you're contributing to slaughterhouse workers' wages. They're doing a job most of us benefit from and if they didn't then cognitive dissonance would fall and we'd have to either be vegetarian or vegan or kill our own animals for food.

That applies to most of the jobs people have listed, though. I'm sure all the people who don't want to date scaffolders and roofers would acknowledge that they do a necessary job. And I'm pretty sure most of the people who say they don't want to date a police officer or an undertaker or a gynaecologist are all fully aware that people absolutely do benefit from those jobs - that doesn't mean they'd want to shag them.

The thread is about who you would/wouldn't be attracted to, not whether their jobs should exist or not, or whether they're good or bad people for doing them.
