Which jobs would put you off dating someone?

Of course, everyone has to do something, so this is light-hearted.

But which jobs would be red flags for you and you can't imagine going out with someone who does this?

Mine would be-

Tory MP/aide/minister- or anything to do with the Tory party
Scaffolder
Stripper
Porn star
PT/fitness instructor/gym owner
Nightclub owner/ manager

Interesting to hear yours!

What is wrong with a PT/gym owner? I would have thought that at least they have the advantage of a good body and health.

I agree with others about Tory politicians but I would also add professionals who are purely in it for the money and who lack any moral purpose, criminal defence lawyers and people who have smelly jobs!

SiobhanSharpe · 21/05/2024 12:02

I think it would depend on my own circumstances at the time, my job, whether there were young children in the mix and so so.
But apart from that, anyone in the police would need to be considered very carefully. Police officers have a certain reputation for infidelity and the divorce/separation rates are thought to be very high.

As well as that I'd be concerned about misogyny, domestic violence and racist attitudes.
And of course I know not all police officers are like that. But...

Puty · 21/05/2024 12:03

Any type of extra hours culture job, where they’re constantly staying late, doing conference calls in the evening etc.

GreenButterBlackBean · 21/05/2024 12:03

Military
Politician
Any form of celebrity
Daily Mail/Sun etc writer
Butcher
Personal Trainer/‘Nutritionist’

Moveoverdarlin · 21/05/2024 12:04

Police.

mrlistersgelfbride · 21/05/2024 12:06

I don't get a lot of these.
What's wrong with teacher, scaffolder, parking attendance, police?
Even abbatoir, someone's got to do it.
If you don't like it stop eating meat 🤷‍♀️

The only thing I wouldn't like is nightclub owner/dj due to unsociable hours and temptation for them.

SiobhanSharpe · 21/05/2024 12:06

Hoppinggreen · 21/05/2024 11:57

But earn more, and are unkliely to announce you all need to move house so might not be so bad.

But also likely to be adrenaline junkies, addicted to danger and, well, their services are for sale to the highest bidder, so.... (Warner, anyone?)
Make sure they have top notch life assurance .😉

loropianalover · 21/05/2024 12:07
  • evening/night shift workers
  • works every weekend
  • regular long haul traveller
  • overworker in any role/industry (not interested in someone checking their emails at dinner or working late every day)
  • public figure
Hellohah · 21/05/2024 12:08

I wonder if the gym instructor/PT thing is that maybe their customers have crushes on them? Or perhaps you may always feel judged for scoffing a large piece of chocolate cake? I don't know - I don't like the gym body.

I'd say the one's previously mentioned: Police, Influencers, Politicians.

I had my roof done a few years ago and the roofers and scaffolders were really nice, no swearing and could string a few sentences together. They were pretty old and filthy though.

stayathomer · 21/05/2024 12:08

Dentist- I’ve awful teeth so I’d be hiding my mouth all the time😅😅😅

Humberston · 21/05/2024 12:09

Comedian.

Shitlord · 21/05/2024 12:09

Anything against my core values really, so yes, abattoir worker, tobacco industry (I knocked someone back for this), defence (similarly), I might have felt differently about the latter, an engineer, if he had shown any moral weighing up of his work but he was just happy to be in a cool sounding job so it was a no, probably gambling industry, Tory MP. Plastic surgeon solely in private cosmetic industry, waste of medical training (don't care if he does nose jobs on the side of other surgery), influencer, it would depend what but I like a man who has more of a purpose in society than just making clips of himself. That said, i wouldn't begrudge someone who has grabbed an opportunity, just if that was their main goal, Something where the money comes from danger so high beam construction or close protection,

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 21/05/2024 12:11

Army

crostini · 21/05/2024 12:11

Lawyer, is an absolute no.

Police, - just no.

'Journalist' for a daily mail type paper.

Someone who worked off shore or is away for huge amounts of time.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 21/05/2024 12:12

CherryRipe1 · 21/05/2024 11:32

Abattoir worker/slaughterhouse
Bailiff
Most sales reps

Ooh yes

I read that abbatpir workers are at much higher risk of suicide

SiobhanSharpe · 21/05/2024 12:12

Seriously, teaching can be awful for people at the moment, ridiculous work load and long hours and often not great support from senior managers .
It has compensations of course but it can be gruelling.
(Not a teacher but DH was for a while. He loved the actual teaching but all the other bollocks ... not so much.)

TFthatsover · 21/05/2024 12:15

Tel12 · 21/05/2024 11:43

Undertaker

They are generally the kindest and funniest people to be around. Wouldn't put me off at all.

Somerandomgirl · 21/05/2024 12:18

😆
The ones emptying bins
Butcher

Anything with dirt and germs and all that grim stuff 😂

TwattyMcFuckFace · 21/05/2024 12:18

BobbyBiscuits · 21/05/2024 11:35

@Revelatio something like that. Lol. I guess I don't think they seem massively trustworthy or sophisticated, even for me, an unemployed benefits claimant. Haha.
That's probably awful. I'm sure they are fine...

Would you rather date an unemployed benefits claimant than a scaffolder then?

TheaBrandt · 21/05/2024 12:18

Anecdotally military seem to be either excellent husbands and fathers or really awful. Nothing in between

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 21/05/2024 12:18

It's so interesting seeing other people's preferences and dislikes. In my family and friends group we have surgeons, vets, teachers, police, big 4 corporate management, HR management and they are all lovely people, all married to their first and only spouse or in long term partnerships, so dating people with those jobs seems perfectly normal and positive to me, yet on this thread they're all a no-no!
I wouldn't touch scaffolders, roofers or any trades with a bargepole for dating purposes, the only exception being if they were university educated and had had a professional career before deciding to learn a trade, doubt there are many of those.
Wouldn't want anyone who worked in sales, if they're good at it they're used to acting, not being genuine, bending the truth and telling people what they want to hear.

Dearg · 21/05/2024 12:18

Having a job is always better than being unemployed, for me. But an absolute no would be a career politician - of any creed- but any jingoistic, nationalist types in particular.
The rise of the councillor, MSP, MP who has not actual life experience to bring to the job is so deeply ‘look at me’ Urgh.

LaPalmaLlama · 21/05/2024 12:19

Honestly it would probably depend on life stage and family situation. If I was planning to have kids, I’d avoid someone who works unsociable/ unpredictable hours but isn’t well paid for it, because their hours can affect your earnings potential but you wouldn’t have the cash to buy in help.

Now I’ve got older/ grown up kids that’s less relevant so it wouldn’t put me off. I do like my own space though so I’d actively be happy with someone who travels or works away a fair bit.

There’s good money in scaffolding though- don’t understand that one- especially if you own the company.

BobbyBiscuits · 21/05/2024 12:19

@TwattyMcFuckFace probably. I don't know now. Gawd. I'm sorry to the scaffolding community.

I worked in an abattoir and I am now a lawyer. Lots would be put off by me :)
