The Australians hate women and girls?

Greengablesfables · 19/05/2024 09:41

It’s just come to my attention that there’s an Australian ‘satire’ 🤢 about a private girls school. The lead character is a girl played by a middle aged man. WTAF?? How is this ok?

‘… her character is written and acted by a thirty-nine year old man, projecting his own (outdated and dubious) idea of what teenage private school girls are like onto his performance. But whatever the reason for Ja’mie’s portrayal, there is no doubt that she is meant to be someone we cannot feel sympathy for and should not feel sympathy for. Lilley justifies us in laughing at Ja’mie, justifies us hating her. And by default, he opens the doors for us to hate on all teenage girls: the shallow, self-obsessed other to our purported multicultural and progressive society.

I hesitate to call Ja’mie: Private School Girl a satire, because its primary effect is to completely dehumanise and ridicule a single teenage girl to the point of hatred, rather than saying something about the mechanisms and ideologies that make her so revolting. At its best the series is puzzling and somewhat distasteful; at its worst, I think it does damage to the image of the teenage girl that real-life teenagers have to contend with. In a society that already has some very derisive views on what teenage girls are, I think we can do without Lilley’s attempts at satire, and some more novels like Beauty Queensinstead.’

It's because you make almost everything about gender. This is why I pointed out the story of the boy who cried wolf.

Period products in prison is actually a case in point - that isn't about gender, it's about misogyny and the way we choose to run prisons.

There is a valid and serious debate to be had about gender. Shoehorning it into literally everything that is discussed on MN is not the way to get that debate.

No. You interpret it as being about ‘gender’. Part of the problem really.

What I’m always talking about are issues regarding women’s sex-based rights.

You’ve done it again here.

Try Fisk and Deadloch. Both brilliant Australian comedies with great female characters

Agree with these recommendations 100%. Two fantastic series.

I completely disagree with you, which shouldn't surprise you. Somehow you manage to slate the entire population of an entire country because of a television show that aired 11 years ago. If it isn't clear to you that it has massively backfired on you, you haven't been listening. You aren't achieving anything. You're just alienating people who could, on many of the points you make, agree with you - because of the way you make your points.

Not everything is about transwomen. Not everything is about men who play female characters. Not everything on television that you find offensive is part of the great international effort to erase women. You may think that it is, but it isn't.

If you could be just a little more nuanced about things, you would find more people took you seriously.

Einwegflasche · 19/05/2024 19:43

Greengablesfables · 19/05/2024 19:23

I’ve done that many times. It still turns into a shit show of disappointingly rude, aggressive and plain fact denying - or fact twisting - posts.

There has been the very odd exception. But in the main I find that trying to discuss the erosion of women’s rights, gets hijacked and ruined by a flurry of usual suspects.

This is MN not a Formal Debate at The OU.

Edited

I've seen some of your posts on other threads as well as this one, you do seem to struggle when people don't agree with you (even when they do actually have a valid point).

Greengablesfables · 19/05/2024 19:52

Ok @pointy again you mention transwomen. I’m always talking about women. Sometimes predatory men. Sometimes violent men. And many other areas that affect women.

Which you don’t see because you’re blinkered into thinking I talk about ‘trans women’. It’s bizarre. But never mind, can’t win em all.

‘Deadloch’ was brilliant. OP, I think you’d love it.

AppleStrudel23 · 19/05/2024 20:12

That's Chris Liley! He's hilarious! My other favourite character he does is Jonah from Tonga. He stereotypes everyone, that's his comedy. If you're offended I'd suggest not watching, it's not a human right to not feel offended!

Your OP was about a TV show featuring a comedian who dresses up as (amongst others) a female teenage character. That was your lead in. What are we supposed to think? And you literally titled it 'The Australians hate women and children'.

If you can't see that this is not the way to lead in to a nuanced debate about sex based rights, I despair.

If you'd led with the article about period products in Australian women's prisons, this thread would look vey different.

Pin0cchio · 19/05/2024 20:23

Are you kidding me? Summer heights high is comedy, its extremely clear is satire and the target audience wasn't teenage girls, its adults. Nearly all good comedy has a degree of uncomfortable material.

Is rosie jones any less funny because she draws upon aspects of her disability? No... she is brilliant.

Loads of comedians explore gender, sexuality, race/cultural background, disability. Its often a way to
highlight issues in a very clever way and show how ludicrous they are. Eg the Leading Lady parts short - Catherine Tate & gemma Arterton

Lovethatforyouhun · 19/05/2024 21:41

Its hilarious! And I’m an ex private school girl. You won’t want to watch his other shows….VERY RACIST. Oh and i am
not white either but laughed, i have a dark sense of humour. Its like Little Britain, funny at the time but of its time. Chill out. You can’t watch it anymore really.

Ooooh, haven't seen Fisk. LOVED Deadloch. Really hoping it's renewed for another season.

Thanks for the tip.

Another hilarious show about an awful woman. Written by a man. Only a few months old. Is that ok 🤢

TERF CT - The play, which will be performed on stage in New York next month and is being touted for the Fringe this summer, sees the author's 'surrogate children – Daniel, Rupert and Emma' stage an 'intervention'

Civil Disobedience, which has its roots in the Edinburgh Fringe and was launched by Barry and Josef Church-Woods in May 2016,* *described it as a "vital think-piece on Joanne, exploring just what could motivate a person with such privilege to take such a divisive stance on issues that affect her fans".

It has been written by Joshua Kaplan, a "queer screenwriter and playwright", and will be performed at The Actors Studio in New York City on Thursday, February 8.

A press release advertising the show claims: "Please note: TERF CT is not a kill piece. It provides space for reflection and ultimately offers the audience time to explore some of the more contentious aspects of JK's life."

The synopsis for the show continues: "Joanne led a blessed life – for a woman. Billionaire. Literary phenomenon. Natural ginger. And most importantly, beloved. Completely beloved. Until she blew it all to hell.

"From book deals to divorces, family dysfunction to broken friendships, TERF CT goes beyond the headlines to explore the woman that captivated a world with her books only to unravel a legacy with her tweets."

I thought this series was brilliant! He ended up turning the character into a podcast, where it's her years later as an influencer.

I remember living in halls at uni and 100% met girls who said stuff like "I don't wanna be near the pov halls" - meaning the self-catered ones, these characters absolutely exist!

wellington77 · 19/05/2024 22:26

Sorry but you are being waaay over sensitive, he’s not dehumanising anyone, it’s a comedy, taking the mick out of certain characters at school not the female sec or gender. And who cares if it’s a man acting - that’s part of the fun. Please take a chill pill

I’m aware that this is a tiny if not now insignificant programme (I thought it was closer to ten yrs old, not twenty) showing the disdain with which a lot of men find women. And seemingly, how a lot of women find women too.

I’m out, now that I’ve been revealed as clearly disdaining women my cover is blown. How will I dare show my face on Mumsnet, much less the fwr board.

Well no, not in the slightest OK, but also not the same thing in any capacity.

uneffingbelievable · 19/05/2024 23:15

WOuld not grow as far as to say all Australians hate women but would say having lived there twice - it is one of the most sexist Western countires I have ever lived in and I have lived in a fair few.

Combined with the laissez faire attitude to racism it is not a plesant combination.

katebushh · 19/05/2024 23:18

Don't be fucking stupidly, Chris Lilley is an accomplishing comedian and writer, he has tonnes of characters most of which age ate the female and some who are and are brilliant. Dear me some of your are such uncultured philistines!

katebushh · 19/05/2024 23:21

Aren't female not ate.

Just to add, a very dear old colleague and friend interviewed Chris Lilley years back for the Sunday times magazine and he's highly intelligent.

Fair enough- 95% of the Australian population has been misogynistic and racist since its inception as Australia and it remains to be so.

Do you mean the British who colonised it, with their genocide of the First Nations people?
