The Australians hate women and girls?

It’s just come to my attention that there’s an Australian ‘satire’ 🤢 about a private girls school. The lead character is a girl played by a middle aged man. WTAF?? How is this ok?

‘… her character is written and acted by a thirty-nine year old man, projecting his own (outdated and dubious) idea of what teenage private school girls are like onto his performance. But whatever the reason for Ja’mie’s portrayal, there is no doubt that she is meant to be someone we cannot feel sympathy for and should not feel sympathy for. Lilley justifies us in laughing at Ja’mie, justifies us hating her. And by default, he opens the doors for us to hate on all teenage girls: the shallow, self-obsessed other to our purported multicultural and progressive society.

I hesitate to call Ja’mie: Private School Girl a satire, because its primary effect is to completely dehumanise and ridicule a single teenage girl to the point of hatred, rather than saying something about the mechanisms and ideologies that make her so revolting. At its best the series is puzzling and somewhat distasteful; at its worst, I think it does damage to the image of the teenage girl that real-life teenagers have to contend with. In a society that already has some very derisive views on what teenage girls are, I think we can do without Lilley’s attempts at satire, and some more novels like Beauty Queensinstead.’

Also getting mad about a show from ages ago is a bit mad.

White Australians definitely have a problem with misogyny and racism, much more openly than in the UK i think, and the uk is bad enough.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 19/05/2024 10:11

This thread is ridiculous. I refuse to believe the OP isn’t taking the piss out of the more ranty ‘do you know what a woman is??!!!’ people on here.

TerrorAustralis · 19/05/2024 10:15

Chris Lilley writes and acts in things were he play all the main characters. That’s his schtick. He had some success, but his comedy hasn’t aged that well and I don’t know that he’s done anything recently. Seems he was a bit of a one-trick pony and everyone is tired of it.

Ja’mie first appeared in We Can Be Heroes which was about 2005, so the character is pushing 20 years old now. Lilley wrote it and played all the main characters, who were all supposed to be nominees for Australian of the Year (a real award).

Lilley’s also pretty good at racism too (see the characters Ricky Wong and Jonah from Tonga).

I just wonder why you’re getting worked up about this now. It’s an old show and I don’t think you can even stream it anymore. There’s plenty of misogynistic content out there that is still available. Why not rant about that?

Louloulouenna · 19/05/2024 10:15

Australia has a major problem as far as women’s rights are concerned. A number of states have gender self ID and it’s estimated that around 10% of the Queensland female prison population are in fact, male.

aplthtoa · 19/05/2024 10:17

This is REALLY old, it was out around the same time as Little Britain, you can't judge a country on its 15+ year old comedy, we've all moved on massively in that time, I don't believe he still does these sketches?

Do you have a source for that claim?

pointythings · 19/05/2024 09:49

So because of one very poor programme, you conclude that all Australians hate women and girls. Not dramatic at all. I have no intention of watching some misogynist shit, but I'm not going to make assumptions about the entire population of a country either. If you wanted a debate, you should have picked a less clickbaity thread title.

Quite. Little Britain was appalling but I don’t think everyone in the UK is racist towards Thai women, mocking towards disabled people, or misogynist.

This TV show doesn’t sound very funny, but it seems it was released in 2013? I’m not sure why you are so exercised by this ten years later?

Yes white Australians do have issues with misogyny and racism, however, I don’t agree it’s more open or worse than parts of the UK. As a mixed raced women, I felt more ‘ism’s’ in parts of Kent, Essex and Suffolk than I’ve ever done in Melbourne or even more rural areas of Australia such as Mildura.

As a people Australians tend to be more upfront about stuff so they talk openly about social issues rather than pretend they don’t exist which means more honest conversations can be had and thus things can move forward.

In recent years parts of the UK have really gone backwards in attitudes. It’s a symptom of a country in decline so people become nastier towards each other. I recently went to Australia and it’s clearly a country on the up. People are more positive in general.

AppleKatie · 19/05/2024 10:23

Summer heights high and the slightly later show about J’aime is very much ‘of its time’. I’m sure there are more recent examples of misogyny you can find if you want to build this sort of argument. Harking back to something that isn’t still being made (and likely wouldn’t be now) isn’t a credible way of doing this.

Louloulouenna · 19/05/2024 10:26

@TerrorAustralis as you might be aware gender self id makes compiling statistics based on actual biological sex almost impossible. However this is the best estimate put together by a variety of pressure groups, Sall Grover is one who is very eloquent on the subject. You can also see the dramatic rise in female incarceration rates following the introduction of gender self ID in Queensland. It has also been reported on by Sky News Australia (yes I know they’re very right wing but the rest of the press aren’t going to touch it).

This is why he gender self id is so pernicious.

AgentJohnson · 19/05/2024 10:31

Wow. These replies tell me why we have a woman problem.

Rather, that you have a problem with people not agreeing with you. If what you’ve written above is your only way to counter their opinion/ arguments, then I would say you’re the one who has a problem with people who challenge your beliefs.

fieldsofbutterflies · 19/05/2024 10:36

Maybe you should watch all his programmes before hoiking up your judgy pants?

Growlybear83 · 19/05/2024 10:37

Why would you be complaining about a TV show that hasn't been in production for many years now? I remember watching it when I was in Australia a long time ago, and thought it was quite funny. I don't know if I would still find it funny now, but I still enjoy watching Little Britain from time to time, and I don't think it seems very dated.

The UK's favourite (most viewed) comedy is Mrs Brown's Boys aparrently.

Aha! Irrefutable proof that the British hate women and girls!

Greengablesfables · 19/05/2024 09:49

Yeah. It’s supposed to be funny. Spare me. It’s misogynistic crap. No I’m a state school girl. It’s not about the school.

It’s about the fact it’s a middle aged man dressed as a school girl, dehumanising and ridiculing teenage girls 🤮

He also wrote it. Course he did. Grim.

Edited

I think you've missed the point of the show. It's satirical. It's not a man getting his kicks from dressing as a schoolgirl.

It's not satirical. Satire punches up.

Mrsjayy · 19/05/2024 11:21

the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues

Definite satire as this is what this programme/comedian protrays all of the above. I mean if you don't find it funny or whatever that's fine but It's definitely satirical.

Growlybear83 · 19/05/2024 11:25

I'm sure I'm not the only person who has just watched the first episode of the first series having read this thread. I thought it was quite funny, very similar in many ways to Little Britain and Catherine Tate. Whilst I realise the humour may not be to everyone's taste, I'm really struggling to see anything that is wrong with it. I'll be watching more episodes now that I've rediscovered it, so thanks to the OP for the heads up.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 19/05/2024 11:26

Thank you OP, the ever pervasiveness of MN's GC views are becoming over saturated with endless threads and endless derailing of political threads is becoming irritating to a lot of users and likely will only become worse as the general election approaches, so thank you for over saturating this already saturated space with this nonsense

OssieShowman · 19/05/2024 11:26

It’s a send up. Obviously not everyone’s cup of tea. Got to ‘get’ Aussie sense of humour.
I personally can’t stand Chris Lilley. This show is very old now. From 2013.

mmgirish · 19/05/2024 11:28

So you think ALL Australians hate women and girls...
