Londoners have absolutely decimated my city

NC as really outing.
I'm a musician and over the years I have seen what was a steady stream of londoners turn into a flood this year.
I'm so gutted. I know everybody has the right to live here but it has pushed so many of my friends out, artists and other musicians. It pisses me off that the whole reason these londoners moved here, they are also destroying.
I'm lucky as my landlord is really decent and hasn't put my rent up in years, so I can afford to stay here. But now I'm considering just leaving because of the vibe factor. It makes me really sad. I still gig a few times a week but the crowd is different. I miss my community, but now everybody is scattered as everyone who was pushed out has gone to different places.
I'm considering just jumping ship and moving on myself but I don't know where to go.
Today some more londoners moved into the street...The whole street is full of scaffolding as they seem to really love doing home improvements 😅
I know I sound really bitter. I guess I am. I don't know whether to stay or go, and of I go, where to?

Well, that’s Brighton for you.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 18/05/2024 12:43

I was going to say Bristol

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 18/05/2024 12:44

How do you know they are "londoners" (whatever that means).

Greengablesfables · 18/05/2024 12:46

Where are you and where would you go to- north south east west?

Revelatio · 18/05/2024 12:47

Yep, let’s keep everyone in their little box and not allow them to move outside a 5 mile radius of where they were born.

People have migrated for thousands of years. I think there is always something positive that new people bring to an area whether they move countries or just towns. Maybe it’s time you tried becoming a migrant and see what you can bring to a new area.

Allmarbleslost · 18/05/2024 12:47

Do you live in a local town for local people?

Countrylife2002 · 18/05/2024 12:48

Maybe it’s Londoners who themselves have been pushed out due to rising costs (like me)?

AmiablePedant · 18/05/2024 12:48

Have Londoners indeed killed one out of ten of all human beings in your city?

Onemoreterm · 18/05/2024 12:49

Deal in Kent. They even use the term DFL ‘Down From London’. A friend brought a lovely cottage there that she Airbnb’s half the year in order to pay the mortgage. She has spent a lot of money doing it up.

She loves her cottage but realises that together with all the other DFLs she is making it unaffordable for locals.

dudsville · 18/05/2024 12:49

@SkillSet that's what I was thinking! @CrushedOrange , will you say which city?

You have my sympathy. I remember when Londoners found my street. Suddenly there were expensive cars and scaffolding everywhere.

RogueFemale · 18/05/2024 12:50

By Londoners do you mean people born and bred in London, or people who moved to London then decided to move again? Or what?

user411966691966 · 18/05/2024 12:51

Maybe we should be asking what is driving all the Londoners out of London?

PhuckyNell · 18/05/2024 12:52

Since when are there rules where you can live

DelphiniumBlue · 18/05/2024 12:52

Rent and house prices in London are astronomical, no one can afford to live here anymore, except for old people like me who bought 30 years ago. My children are Londoners and they have all moved somewhere else because they have no other option. Most of my friends have moved out too, they can't afford to stay.
Soon I'll be moving out too, probably near to one of my DC.
Are you aware that many house repairs ( eg roof, gutters ,first floor windows) require scaffolding to keep the workmen safe? Gone are the days when it was OK for some guy paid in cash hand to balance on the top of a ladder and risk his life/health. We have health & safety rules for a reason.

Betterifido · 18/05/2024 12:52

You haven’t actually specified what it is about the Londoners you don’t like, apart from doing home improvements, so assume it because they are pushing house prices up? Anything else?

Onemoreterm · 18/05/2024 12:54

Second home owners can be a real problem

CrushedOrange · 18/05/2024 12:56

SkillSet · 18/05/2024 12:42

Well, that’s Brighton for you.

Got it in one 😅

I'm not too sure where to go. A lot of people have gone to other cities like Sheffield or Birmingham. There are also quite a few who moved further along the coast, like Hastings or Worthing. These places definitely don't match up, but I'm tempted to do that as am quite energised by the idea of trying to grow a new community, just trying to assess whether those places can be livened up though, or whether I will leave town to try and contribute to creating a vibe somewhere else, only for it not to take off and then I will have lost my LL here. Guess that's a risk you just have to take though!

The issues around housing, the scarcity of housing, the high cost of renting etc etc. comes down to lack of social housing, restricted supply from private devlopers, profiteering in the private rental sector and the purchase of second homes/AirBnBs.

We need to address those root causes nationally, with particular attention paid to areas such as e.g. SW where second home ownership has trashed communities.

I understand the impact on your area is hard, the individuals moving to your area are not the issue though, the whole problem needs to be addressed.

You will displace someone else/drive up prices elsewhere if you move - so it sounds like you do not have an issue with this happening, just if it happens to you?

Meadowfinch · 18/05/2024 12:59

I feel for you OP.

During covid we had groups of wfh Londoners move into our very rural village.

They moaned A LOT and seemed to think they could ban cockerels, church bells, slurry wagons, farmers cutting hedges or haymaking at night, people riding horses, teens mooching. Don't teens mooch in London?

Forever petitioning the parish council about something - lawn mowers, street lights. It got quite funny in the end.

They've moved back now. The last couple has just exchanged contracts. I hope they are happier where they settle.

Maybe yours will experience a regional winter or two and move back as well.

So you don't like Londoners coming to
"Your" town and changing the vibe, so you plan to move elsewhere and change the vibe there to suit you?

Is it londoners or have all your 'community' moved on with their lives, got larger houses to accommodate children or smaller ones now kids have moved out? Moved out to the country? Maybe you are the issue and the 'londoners' all hate that mumsnetter who insists on warbling through their nice night out at the pub?

YANBU. My town is similar, completely changed from 25 years ago, full of rich Londoners who've pushed house prices up so much we would have to leave if we wanted to move house. One a few streets away recently sold for over 2m for a four bed detached house! (Ours isn't worth anywhere near that, our street isn't as desirable). It's changed the types of ships we have, there's no longer anywhere ordinary people can buy clothes or even affordable gifts. You can't move for restaurants and coffee shops. And it's so cliquey now!
Unfortunately when rich people move somewhere in sufficient numbers they do completely alter the place. I feel like I live in Chelsea now (I used to work there so know it well).
