Londoners have absolutely decimated my city

NC as really outing.
I'm a musician and over the years I have seen what was a steady stream of londoners turn into a flood this year.
I'm so gutted. I know everybody has the right to live here but it has pushed so many of my friends out, artists and other musicians. It pisses me off that the whole reason these londoners moved here, they are also destroying.
I'm lucky as my landlord is really decent and hasn't put my rent up in years, so I can afford to stay here. But now I'm considering just leaving because of the vibe factor. It makes me really sad. I still gig a few times a week but the crowd is different. I miss my community, but now everybody is scattered as everyone who was pushed out has gone to different places.
I'm considering just jumping ship and moving on myself but I don't know where to go.
Today some more londoners moved into the street...The whole street is full of scaffolding as they seem to really love doing home improvements 😅
I know I sound really bitter. I guess I am. I don't know whether to stay or go, and of I go, where to?

Well listen, I have lost interest in this thread now so will leave it here, but thanks for your ideas. And thanks to all the outraged DFLs who chipped in to give their perspective. Enjoy your weekend all! Go easy on the home improvements ;)

😂😂 now you sound bitter and a bit pathetic. Stop moaning, you’ve got a roof over your head, work, friends, a blue sky and sea. Change your perspective…oh and stay where you are cos it really is ‘grim up North’ 😉

Bunchesofhyacinths · 18/05/2024 13:53

This made me laugh. I lived In Brighton in the 80s, and people were always complaining about people from London pushing up property prices and taking more than their fair share of street parking spaces. Plus ça change…

IItisymoi · 18/05/2024 13:54

Liverpool is good for musicians. I gather some local lads did quite well around 60 years ago. Brexit has made moving to Europe considerably more difficult. NOT impossible but things that were 'rights' have to be worked for now.
Musicians appear all over the place in the UK and Europe (I happen to know because of what I do). I moved to France because I could not afford anywhere in the UK and having travelled and lived in various parts of England/Wales I did not think anywhere had a super advantage over others. I quite fancied North Wales BUT it was just too expensive.

CrushedOrange · 18/05/2024 13:14

No it's not the same at all.

The Londoners are all about consuming rather than producing.

They want to live somewhere where they can consume art and music on tap, but they don't want to make any of it themselves. They just want to buy it.

They don't contribute to anything except pushing prices up. Oh and I guess the pavements have fewer weeds.

I live in a place that is quickly becoming a London bolt hole and this rings true round here. You can spot a Londoner because they complain that this isn't London because it doesn't have x y and z but they do nothing to integrate with the local area other than force house prices up and fill up the local schools.

Yep, let’s keep everyone in their little box and not allow them to move outside a 5 mile radius of where they were born.

People have migrated for thousands of years. I think there is always something positive that new people bring to an area whether they move countries or just towns. Maybe it’s time you tried becoming a migrant and see what you can bring to a new area.

This. ^

Deal in Kent. They even use the term DFL ‘Down From London’. A friend brought a lovely cottage there that she Airbnb’s half the year in order to pay the mortgage. She has spent a lot of money doing it up.

She loves her cottage but realises that together with all the other DFLs she is making it unaffordable for locals.

Dfl is everywhere along the south

Lost interest = didn’t realise just how much of a dick of yourself you’d made 😉

Try Liverpool? It lost population for many years, now doing better but I don’t think you’d be squeezing anyone out. Good music and cultural scene and so far as the locals are concerned you couldn’t get further away from the type of ex London resident you’re describing! Plus coastal so you can still go to the beach if you want.

I don't think Liverpool needs this unknown musician to give it some vibes! Grin

IItisymoi · 18/05/2024 13:59

Kind of a shame really because I could suggest places that are interesting and good for music across the Uk and Europe, such is the weird life I lead.

Ethylred · 18/05/2024 14:00

Oh come off it. Your landlord hasn't put up your rent in years while mine, in London, is increasing mine by 30% this year. Why else do you think I'm moving? Although the pleasure of annoying you makes up for it, a little.

SocksAndTheCity · 18/05/2024 14:01

So the people from London 'forcing the house prices up' are compelling unwitting local property sellers to accept sums well in excess of the value of their houses on pain of death, are they?

It couldn't be possible that the local sellers are a greedy bunch of cunts who think anyone moving from London must be minted and deserves to pay more for the same thing than somebody else?

KimberleyClark · 18/05/2024 14:05

In Wales there is now a 50% council tax premium on second homes. Someone I know is having to turn their second home into a business and let it out to holidaymakers. I think it’s fair enough.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 18/05/2024 14:05

After about 5 minutes every newcomer is brought into the London family and treated as a Londoner. This is why when they move elsewhere after a few years, people from other areas just assume they’ve always lived in London. There’s none of this not being accepted until you’re 3 generations deep stuff

I think that very much depends on what area you’re in, whether you fit in with the locals and what you ask for when you go to the local cafe. Most I know would cackle at anyone claiming they were a Londoner because they’d moved from the Home Counties to work in an advertising agency.

OhshutupBrenda · 18/05/2024 14:07

Don't go to Birmingham it's a shit hole. I managed to get away 3 years ago!

She bought a lovely cottage. You can bring a cottage anywhere. They're not portable

You can’t bring a cottage anywhere. 😉

The second home premium also applies if the home isn't let out for half the year, so that's is difficult to achieve too.

EmpressOfTheThread · 18/05/2024 14:14

Whatever you do, OP do not consider moving to Yorkshire (any part). We have no music at all apart from banging bin lids together and spend every weekend throwing beer and pork scratchings at artists. You'd hate it 👎

Pollipops1 · 18/05/2024 14:16

Are these actual Londoners or people who moved to London for a few yrs, had a dc and went back to areas they are from?

What about all the Londoners who are displaced by everyone moving to London? Plenty of threads on here about where dc should move to in London (often Clapham, that has really changed), no one pipes up with you will price out the locals.

Businessflake · 18/05/2024 14:16

Countrylife2002 · 18/05/2024 12:48

Maybe it’s Londoners who themselves have been pushed out due to rising costs (like me)?

Or who have moved out because of all the foreigners moving in who have changed the vibe?

Pollipops1 · 18/05/2024 14:17

@Whothefuckdoesthat true 😆😆

pinkdelight · 18/05/2024 14:19

You sound like such a Brighton cliche. Brighton has always been a little London by the sea, and pretty up itself too so it's not a matter of gentrification. It's often pricier than London (less house for your money) and much less diverse. It's also got no shortage of creatives so I wouldn't worry too much. Maybe they just don't want to play with you.

margegunderson · 18/05/2024 14:20

Londoners have been moving to Brighton in droves for at least two decades now - there was something called the Cheeky Guide published which told them which schools to go for, etc. So not sure why you're noticing this now? Patcham is full of born and bred Brightonians as are Mile Oak, Hangleton... it's not like everyone has moved. Are you Brighton born or did you (and your mates?) arrive as a student?

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 18/05/2024 14:20

'The Londoners are all about consuming rather than producing.

You think they don't have art and music on tap in London?!
