Is mumsnet right wing?

There are so many benefits bashing threads on here I’m really starting to wonder. Do the majority of people posting on mumsnet lean heavily to the right?

No, I don't think so.

Mothership4two · 17/05/2024 02:52

No

QueenCamilla · 17/05/2024 02:55

🤣

ThomussTank · 17/05/2024 02:56

No. The benefits system is far from perfect, anyone should be free to criticise it without being labelled a right wing loon.

HonorGold · 17/05/2024 03:05

Have you seen the amount of anti-Tory posts?

DaftyLass · 17/05/2024 03:55

Mumsnet is made of millions of different people, with varried backgrounds and life circumstances, so it would be a bit previous to assume we would all vote as one.

CurlewKate · 17/05/2024 04:24

IMO Mumsnet tends to be right leaning. The vast majority of posters don't join in political debates, but show themselves to be centre right when they express views in threads on other topics. The big political debates threads? Hard to tell but probably about 50:50.....

ichundich · 17/05/2024 04:31

Well, I have a Labour party advert showing at the top of this message right now! Also judging from the amount of teacher unionists on this site I'd say it's left-wing rather than right wing. But then there is a lot of transphobia also...

EmmaGrundyForPM · 17/05/2024 04:40

I think of MN as being quite MC, Liberal leftie - myself included - but then the benefits bashing makes me question that.

I think it's a bit like the BBC - if you're left wing inclined, you think it's run by the right, and if you're right wing inclined, you think it's run by the left. .

Mercurial123 · 17/05/2024 07:05

It's definitely got more right-wing and intolerant over the years.

TinyYellow · 17/05/2024 07:08

No it’s not. I don’t see ‘so many’ benefit bashing threads. There are a few benefits threads sometimes but any threads asking anything about benefits is automatically accused of bashing.

Criticising the system is fine.
Some threads do appear to also criticise anyone who gets benefits at all, despite them using the system properly.

Mumsnet is not the Borg/a hive mind. There are many many people and many many views.

Holly Valance does a nice smile and head tilt but what she says doesn't resonate with me. I think success in life should make you more determined to support those who are struggling. And seeing how rich the rich are should make you want to fight to reduce inequality.

CurlewKate · 17/05/2024 07:26

That's not Holly Vallance being original, by the way!

OmuraWhale · 17/05/2024 07:27

I have never voted Tory, but that doesn't mean I unreservedly support the benefits system. The recent articles about the number of people claiming PIP soaring are a concern - the taxpayer can't afford to support them all. If you want to describe me as benefits bashing or right wing then that's up to you.

CroftonWillow · 17/05/2024 07:28

As a country we have traditionally leaned centre-right so if it's representative of the nation as a whole then yes, slightly.

pilates · 17/05/2024 07:29

No
I haven’t seen loads of benefit bashing threads either.

Ifailed · 17/05/2024 07:37

right leaning
Why are people using this phrase, are they ashamed of "right wing"?

EasternStandard · 17/05/2024 07:38

Have you really missed all the pro Labour posts?

Noname1000 · 17/05/2024 07:38

The FWR topic seems to be quite right wing.

This is a prime example of a right winger.

AmusedMaker · 17/05/2024 07:40

It probably is - but like in RL, right leaning people usually keep quiet about their political views.

VickyEadieofThigh · 17/05/2024 07:43

Noname1000 · 17/05/2024 07:38

The FWR topic seems to be quite right wing.

Calling feminism "right wing" began when men demanded that women accept some men into our spaces, organisations, sports, dating apps and so on.

Feminists aren't "right wing" for refusing to do so.
