The secret to 50+ diet & exercise

Sorry posting here for traffic. But for the last 3 months I have been doing the daily 4 x 1 minute planking & wall sits as recommended by Michael Mosley, and also been living off chaffles. (Cheesy egg waffles) I had never been massively overweight until my late 40s, I’m nearly 52, but the combination of the chaffles & really simple exercises has been a game changer for me. The weight has dropped off me, chaffles are delicious & you can make sandwiches out of them for work.

I’d really struggled to lose those menopause pounds, but so delighted to see a change.

Re laughing cow - I think you maybe need cheese that will harden back into shape when cool, like baking with butter rather than marg for some things.

AGlinnerOfHope · 20/05/2024 17:06

@heydiddlysquat are you heating it first? I preheat mine, then pour it in to almost fill the mould.
It puffs as it cooks, lifting the lid slightly.

heydiddlysquat · 20/05/2024 17:24

Thanks for the advice. I think I have the hang of it now and they have turned out quite good. Will have with Tuna salad and mushrooms for tea.

Magpie50 · 21/05/2024 04:26

I feel like this diet would be a bit challenging for a vegan like me!🤔
But then again I managed to lose 7st after 50 without a single chaffle so I suppose I'm all good.
(My secret was loads of exercise and loads of fresh, unprocessed foods. Very much the slow, boring method!LOL).

ChaffleLifeChanging · 21/05/2024 05:53

@PrimalLass thanks for the link. Might try a chiffle or even a chafken! The link trick is to click the link icon next to the italic I below the messsge box, then paste your link in there & give it a title above.

@Magpie50 wow 7st off that’s amazing, it’s definitely about finding something that works for you. And yes chaffles aren’t vegan friendly !

As others have said use good quality hard cheese with your mozzarella. A good sprinkling of freshly chopped chives makes a difference too.

Hello! Just bought the waffle maker and have eggs delivered every day - my sons class eggs as an absolute super food. They are both very fit. Thank you Daffodil

What a great thread to start the day reading! DD has recently been discovered to be gluten intolerant and so it’s only me that eats bread. I’ve changed to mega seeded bread so she’s not jealous but I’d love to ditch it, but I can’t face anything cold for breakfast. Will try these I already have an egg with toast and I can always eat cheese! I’ve also started lifting so more protein is great. Thanks OP

also will start the exercises today. I can plank but I’ve never timed it so this will be interesting! And the chair sit is a great plan as I’m conscious my legs are relatively weak.

DD isn’t keen on cheese but I’m going to see if she will try a chaffle since she can’t eat bread, maybe if I get some mild cheese it won’t taste as strongly?

If you do it with only grated mozzarella you can't taste the cheese.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 21/05/2024 07:56

My DS said they should be called " chomoffles" because they are cheese omelette waffles!
I forgot about my fasting and had a .milky coffee but I'll still wait till lunch to have a chaffle sandwich. Cream cheese and salmon today I think.

StarsHideYourFir3s · 21/05/2024 09:36

I'm stealing into this thread to BEG you to take up strength training if you haven't already. It helps protect your joints and bone density, including by increaaing the fluid around your knee joints. You will also build muscle which burns more calories when you are at rest.

Ohyoudodoyou · 21/05/2024 11:00

Hi all
I've been doing my planks and squats. I've also been eating chaffles but just having a more bready version with avocado (no cheese, made with almond flour)
The waffle machine. Is brilliant. Thanks OP!

Wallabyone · 21/05/2024 13:34

I had one this morning with 20g of grated halloumi and some dried mint, black pepper-it was lovely!

Left · 21/05/2024 14:40

Started the planks and squats at the weekend but haven’t ordered a chaffle maker yet. Struggling to commit to a colour 🤣🤣

OnlyChaffleFans · 21/05/2024 18:04

Avocado & Quorn sausage filling. Yum😋
@ChaffleLifeChanging Thank you so much for this inspiring thread. Making avoiding gluten & carbs so easy & tasty! 🙏

@OnlyChaffleFans loving the user name. And what a chaffle ! Glad to hear everyone else enjoying their Chaffles.

I must try these. I've taken up strength training in various forms, been walking a lot, been pretty low-carb (no sugar no alcohol, no potatoes, bread, rice...) and have (at 52) lost 3kg in a fortnight, which tbh is a good result for me. Just <many many> more kg to go!

JosiePosey · 21/05/2024 18:50

Placemarking, my waffle maker arrives tomorrow 👏

ChaffleLifeChanging · 21/05/2024 18:54

@StarsHideYourFir3s thank you. What other simple strength training exercises would you recommend I build into my daily planks & wall sits ?

OP posts:
AGlinnerOfHope · 21/05/2024 19:12

Agree @ChaffleLifeChanging

Recommendations please, @StarsHideYourFir3s ! I know I need it.

JosiePosey · 21/05/2024 19:14

DramaLlamaBangBang · 20/05/2024 15:57

It was nice! Thanks for motivating me to do it!
Also, I went to Lidl today and they are doing an XXL event. I bought an XXL bag of grated mozzarella. I was thinking I could freeze it and take some out as and when I need a Chaffle!
We didnt have any bread so DH had 2 chaffles, and last night DS took a bite out of one thinking it was a normal waffle and declared it 'weird' so I only have 2 left out of 7 I made!

For anyone doing serious carb counting, ready grated cheeses are coated in flour.

They disagree with my stomach too.

ChaffleLifeChanging · 21/05/2024 19:48

@JosiePosey thanks for the heads up, didn’t realise that. Can see that the ready grated mozzarella has a tiny amount of potato starch in it, but grate all of the other cheese from a block. I don’t count my carbs but good to know. (Afraid to count carbs due to wine intake)

This thread is the kind of thing I love mumsnet for- something simple that I would never have thought of !!

comeondover · 21/05/2024 20:38

I've caught the bug too. I'm looking at waffle makers and have started the planks and wall sits. Omg my knees are so creaky especially when I get up from the wall sits - what's that about?

ChaffleLifeChanging · 21/05/2024 20:57

@comeondover now you mention it my knees used to hurt like hell a lot. But since doing these for about three months my back & knees have been loads better, and no leg ache in the night.
@Crikeyalmighty you’re welcome. X
