The secret to 50+ diet & exercise

ChaffleLifeChanging · 16/05/2024 20:08

Sorry posting here for traffic. But for the last 3 months I have been doing the daily 4 x 1 minute planking & wall sits as recommended by Michael Mosley, and also been living off chaffles. (Cheesy egg waffles) I had never been massively overweight until my late 40s, I’m nearly 52, but the combination of the chaffles & really simple exercises has been a game changer for me. The weight has dropped off me, chaffles are delicious & you can make sandwiches out of them for work.

I’d really struggled to lose those menopause pounds, but so delighted to see a change.

I came in from work feeling "hmmm I could eat something" and dug out DD's waffle maker. I luckily found 1 egg lurking in the fridge so made a chaffle with Davidstow cheddar, and topped it with fried mushrooms and 1/2 a teaspoon of chilli jam. Wow. I'm stuffed and it was SOOOO tasty. Thanks, OP!

I've been type 2 diabetic for 10+ years. Since turning 50, my blood sugars have been harder and harder to control and my diabetic nurse wanted to up my medication (horrible metformin which my gut hates). I was desperate to avoid this so asked for 3 months to try naturally which she reluctantly agreed to. I try to keep carbs under 100g a day, preferably under 80g so it's not Keto (couldn't cope with the constipation) and I find that I've got more energy, feel a million times better and bonus is that my hb1ac went from 50 to 42 in 3 months. I've lost nearly 2 stone, and the best part is not calorie counting. Just wish eating out was easier....

Waffle maker ordered, eggs in, almond flour ordered and exercise clothes sorted out ready to plank and squat. I have to as my knee is so incredibly painful that if I don't lose weight and strengthen the knee then it won't get better. I'm normally very active, hiking and walking everywhere but this pain is so debilitating.

ChaffleLifeChanging · 17/05/2024 18:22

Thanks for your interest everyone. I’m so glad that this is striking a chord with many people. For those that have asked they can be eaten hot or cold and cooked until soggy or crispy whatever your preference. You can pre cook them & stick them in the fridge to eat cold or microwave. I build the planking & wall squats into my daily routine after a shower making the bed, getting clothes ready, cleaning teeth etc in my minutes break. So it’s basically 8 minutes of planking & squats.

Would love to see more chaffle photos. 😀

I have also bought the waffle maker and will try this!

I really struggle with planks - how on earth do people build up to them?

Lie on the floor, get your arms really closely tucked in to your chest / boobs, elbows near boobs. Then just lift up, keeping back straight, hold core in. Even if you start at 20s and build up that’s brilliant. Good luck !

Will the almond flour go in the chaffle as well as the cheese?

DramaLlamaBangBang · 17/05/2024 18:53

I'm going to try this. I've been really stuck in a rut if what to fo about my weight since I've Hit 50. I'm doing loads more exercise and have changed my mindset about it, but my eating is rubbish. I'm not losing weight, even though my shape is changing from the exercise. I know it's because I take in far too many calories. I have heard of chaffles, and I have a waffle bowl maker, and a sandwich toaster with changeable plates,. It didn't occur to me to make a massive jug if mix and just pour it in. It sounds delicious with tuna mayo and salad. Perfect wfh lunch. I can easily go without breakfast so coukd have a carb with lunch and see how that goes.

How do you take the flaxseed please?

I get milled flaxseed from Lidl to put in kids breakfast.

I don’t actually put any almond flour in mine. Just cheese, eggs, salt & pepper & fresh herbs.

Thank you for this - will try in a frying pan at some point.

I read the thread this afternoon when having the shall I shan't I go to the gym now procrastination in my head and it got me out of the door. I'm also hugely grateful to the pp who posted the reverse plank video as I can't plank due to dodgy shoulders. Added this in to this afternoon's session and now my abs are screaming so something worked!

Sadsadworld · 17/05/2024 19:27

Thanks for sharing! Going to try this too

JustPleachy · 17/05/2024 19:31

@OlderandwiserMaybe you could try a hollow hold as a plank alternative

See how you get on with the regressions to start as it can be a wee bit, er, intense

No no no, please don’t do this with a prolapse. You’d be better off doing the plank. You’re supposed to avoid anything where you lift both legs off the ground.

I have a moderate prolapse and I find planks fine.

Hollow body was an alternative for poster with shoulder problem upthread, to avoid putting weight through it.

For people who do yoga, is this like the 'boat'? I'd rather do the plank. That's brutal!

ChaffleLifeChanging · 17/05/2024 21:29

I had a moderate prolapse too, which I’ve tried to manage by exercise over the years, but I really try & pull myself in when doing the planking & wall sits & have seen a massive benefit. Had tried all sorts before, even investing in Elvie trainer, but so far this is the best. Of course anyone with a serious issue should seek medical advice, but these simple & easy to do exercises have helped me so much.

Amazon must be wondering what’s going on as I’ve just bought a mini waffle maker too thanks to this thread. Grin

I’m 57 and have been trying to find an alternative to sandwiches for lunch for years. I’m reminded of the time I started a MN thread asking for bread alternatives for lunch and the first suggestion came back: “How about beans on toast.” ConfusedGrin

Looking forward to waffle maker arriving!

Yes, I avoid it.

If you have any kind of prolapse or diastasis recti then it should be avoided (more or less anyone who’s had babies!)

You don’t get as much core benefit from it as you do from plank either.

Wallabyone · 18/05/2024 09:44

Thank you for this thread. I have been craving sugar lately, mainly because I'm so much more tired in a new job. I'm also in my forties, follow Slimming World, but will definitely consciously increase my protein intake as this always helps me. Have ordered a little waffle iron too, as these sound tasty and I can use my measured cheese to make them. Thank you!x

Crikeyalmighty · 18/05/2024 09:47

Sales of waffle irons must be through the roof at Amazon!! lol

OolongTeaDrinker · 18/05/2024 09:58

I lost loads of weight on a keto diet about 5 years ago, but a side effect was I lost about a third of my hair. I was not being sensible though and was living off eggs, cheese and meat with only a few vegetables, so my word of warning is make sure as well as the chaffles, everyone be sure you are getting all your micro-nutrients too!

ChaffleLifeChanging · 18/05/2024 10:07

Yummy sausage chafflewich for late breakfast. And always nice to create a new word on a Saturday morning ! Sandchaffle didn’t sound very appealing.
