The secret to 50+ diet & exercise

ChaffleLifeChanging · 16/05/2024 20:08

Sorry posting here for traffic. But for the last 3 months I have been doing the daily 4 x 1 minute planking & wall sits as recommended by Michael Mosley, and also been living off chaffles. (Cheesy egg waffles) I had never been massively overweight until my late 40s, I’m nearly 52, but the combination of the chaffles & really simple exercises has been a game changer for me. The weight has dropped off me, chaffles are delicious & you can make sandwiches out of them for work.

I’d really struggled to lose those menopause pounds, but so delighted to see a change.

This looks interesting, i definitely eat too much bread. Thanks OP.

I’ve noticed that in a 6 week break from work I had more access to bread (Tescos finest mixed olive bread looking at you!) and what I’d eat at work was ryvita or Warburtons thins) and also more fruit less chocolate and crisps. It does add up.

TreesWelliesKnees · 17/05/2024 10:03

I'm off to buy a waffle/chaffle maker... But before I do I need to know, do you pronounce it chAffle or chOffle like waffle?!

YorkNew · 17/05/2024 10:03

I also got my act together last year when I was 54, I cut out most carbs except fruit and lost two and three quarter stone in just over four months. I’ve maintained my weight for the last 7 months and now eat carbs.

ChaffleLifeChanging · 17/05/2024 10:10

@TreesWelliesKnees CHOFFLE 😀

@ChaffleLifeChanging You inspired me to have a go so I just whipped up these for breakfast.

DH has been telling me for months that we need to bin the waffle iron. Absolutely no chance now, I'm a chaffle convert, so speedy and delicious!

ClawdiaCattipuss · 17/05/2024 10:16

Not me who's just ordered a waffle maker! Hmm

I've made some changes recently and managed to lose 2 stone over the past 9 weeks. I don't eat a keto or low carb diet but I could definitely do with upping my protein so I think a few chaffles a week could be the answer

I'll throw in some planks too!

Thanks for the inspo OP!

murgugug · 17/05/2024 10:19

does anyone know are planks safe for those with prolapse? I have a mild one and wondering if I can get away with it!

BlastedPimples · 17/05/2024 10:23

Great news. I will do this too. Thanks for the tips.

You need to approach with caution, and maybe check with your doctor. Heavy lifting and exercises such as planks, crunches and soon can make things worse in some cases, although ultimately getting your core stronger will help your pelvic floor. You should be doing pelvic floor exercises anyway, and if you're not, get started! You can find modified planks and exercises that are suitable for women with prolapses if you google, they would be better than trying to do standard planks straight away.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 17/05/2024 10:38

One thing I’ve found is that the flaxseed he recommends eliminates constipation 😣

SwordToFlamethrower · 17/05/2024 10:45

Bread is a prebiotic, make your own sourdough as its just flour, salt and water. Very good for you

OlderandwiserMaybe · 17/05/2024 10:50

52 here and also trying to loose weight.
I have been "loosely" following the Fast 800 plan too but being honest I tend to go over to 900 or 950 calories a day. I've lost 7lbs in 7-8 weeks so not a huge amount - but I don't have a huge amount to loose so I think I'm bound o find it slow progress.

Thanks @ChaffleLifeChanging for sharing something that works for you and giving us new recipe idea. I don't have a waffle iron so I might just try same recipe but making it like an omelette.

For most of my life I've taken sandwiches to work for lunch so giving up bread has left me very short of lunch ideas.

I would be unable to do the plank exercise due to a shoulder problem but is there an alternative that will help me build up core muscles??

CharlotteBog · 17/05/2024 10:59

ChaffleLifeChanging · 16/05/2024 20:41

I have a chaffle sandwich for breakfast with maybe bacon or sausage, big salad for lunch with loads of mayonnaise, avocado & chicken, then dinner is wine with another chaffle with butter, cream cheese & peanut butter. I do avoid any sweet stuff though, apart from the wine. So it’s basically low carb except for the wine.

Do you live alone, or are there different meal preps going on in your household?

ChaffleLifeChanging · 17/05/2024 11:11

@CharlotteBog no I don’t live alone, and to be fair I was probably exaggerating with my OP. I regularly have a normal meal in the evenings but without the carbs.
@changingzooms loving your Chaffles. What did you have with them ?
@nowtygaffer it’s easy to clean. The one I use is tiny & fits in a drawer. Once cooked the chaffle should lift out completely with zero sticking or residue, the waffle maker doesn’t need greasing first. You’ll end up with a residue of cooked egg around the bottom but a hot soapy cloth easily takes it off. Top tip is to stand it on a plate to catch any drips.

ChaffleLifeChanging · 17/05/2024 11:19

@OlderandwiserMaybe totally agree with the sandwich thing. If I just take a salad to work I’m starving by the afternoon & end up attacking office biscuits. Taking a chaffle sandwich for brunch has really helped me stay full. I will generally make them the night before so I’m not rushing in the morning.

Not sure what you could replace the planks with sorry.

@ChaffleLifeChanging A lovely green salad 🥬

DecayedStrumpet · 17/05/2024 11:26

@OlderandwiserMaybe you could try a hollow hold as a plank alternative

See how you get on with the regressions to start as it can be a wee bit, er, intense

Wonder if you could make them in those toaster sandwich bags? Or breville toasted sandwich maker?

Problem for me is eggs & no carbs affects my IBS.

I’ve listened to that plank podcast before. I’ll listen again
thanks op!

Which plank podcast is this?

Wow!!! Please tell me how you did that, that's amazing.

When I make a chaffle, I use 1 x large egg and about 50g of shredded mozzarella. Nothing else. It makes two chaffles and approx 120 cal, 10g protein and 8.5g fat. (according to Myfitnesspal)

Add some home-made tuna mayo on top and a fresh side salad. Very satisfying and great macros. The saturated fat in it is thousand time better than any margarine on a bread roll.

Going to dig my waffle maker out of the attic, thanks OP.

rainydaysaway · 17/05/2024 11:45

What does everyone eat with their Chaffles?

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/05/2024 11:52

Doing planks make me lose my waist, I prefer Pilates and lots of twisting movements to keep my waistline. I do lots of squats and plies too, and run up and down the stairs hundreds of times a day for my job. But if it works for you, OP!

No idea what a chaffle is, but I couldn't eat all that cheese!! It can give me a headache.

CactusMactus · 17/05/2024 11:54

I would really worry about that diet long term. It's basic Atkins...

CormorantStrikesBack · 17/05/2024 11:55

Chaffles look interesting.

I have swapped bread for warburtons thins which are 100 cals each. I have 2 for lunch with fat free cottage cheese, sliced turkey and rocket. They are lovely.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 17/05/2024 12:12

@HaystackHair the one the op linked to upthread.
