The secret to 50+ diet & exercise

ChaffleLifeChanging · 16/05/2024 20:08

Sorry posting here for traffic. But for the last 3 months I have been doing the daily 4 x 1 minute planking & wall sits as recommended by Michael Mosley, and also been living off chaffles. (Cheesy egg waffles) I had never been massively overweight until my late 40s, I’m nearly 52, but the combination of the chaffles & really simple exercises has been a game changer for me. The weight has dropped off me, chaffles are delicious & you can make sandwiches out of them for work.

I’d really struggled to lose those menopause pounds, but so delighted to see a change.

Top tip!😁

@CactusMactus I have loads of salad & veg, it’s not really atkins.

I don't eat chaffles (although they look good!), but I have always naturally eaten a low carb, high protein, high fat diet with plenty of vegetables, butter, lard, goose fat, olive oil, cheese and full-fat dairy feature prominently in my diet, as does pretty fatty meat (I'm basically Jack Spratts's wife), not much sugar or processed food. It's just how I've always liked to eat.

50, size 10 at 5' 8" and had my cholesterol tested recently, and it was excellent, so I don't think a high-fat wholefood diet will necessarily lead to high cholesterol.

I do enjoy a plank too!

Are any of these M Molesey exercises on You Tube?
I'm not sure I could do the plank. I've got shoulder issues in both shoulders.

TalkSomeSense1 · 17/05/2024 12:51

Can you change out the cheese? I don't really do dairy but like the sound of dusting off my waffle maker. We have geese, chickens and ducks so there's always a ton of eggs to eat. :-)

AGlinnerOfHope · 17/05/2024 12:51

You can plank against the wall to get started. Move your feet away with time.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/05/2024 12:53

Posting to save - ! I love cheese and eggs so sound great for me as I'm gluten free and hate gluten free bread

One thing I’ve found is that the flaxseed he recommends eliminates constipation 😣

How do you take the flaxseed please?

HorseAreBetterThanHumans · 17/05/2024 13:13

I have also bought the waffle maker and will try this!

I really struggle with planks - how on earth do people build up to them?

Madamlulu · 17/05/2024 13:16

Really love this idea. Thanks so much for sharing OP x

I took it in capsule form from H and B but I think it gave me the runs for a few days. Now stopped it and changed to milled stuff with other goodies in too. It is a well known side effect apparently whereas the powdered stuff is a source of fibre.

Peridot1 · 17/05/2024 13:24

I like the idea of the Chaffles too. Might have to buy a waffle maker.

Also need to plank.

Thanks for the info @ChaffleLifeChanging - I must listen to the podcasts. I think realising that changing just one or two things can make such a difference is key. So often we think we have to do a complete all in hell for leather go at it which isn’t usually sustainable.

I have a mix of seeds including flax that I sprinkle on my kefir with fruit every morning.

ChaffleLifeChanging · 17/05/2024 07:10

@Beatrixslobber yes an alternative to bread when you’re trying to avoid carbs. And so convenient as I get fed up of salads. Picture of the mixture attached. It needs to be really thick and will thicken even more if left in the fridge. If it gets too thick just add more egg.

Thank you! I am avoiding carbs so this is helpful.

Although part of me thinks that I could just make an omelette!

JudyBlumesBlubber · 17/05/2024 13:41

placemaking for generally interesting chat!

I good way to start building core strength without the full plank is a mini plank. Get on all fours with toes tucked under then just life your knees a couple of inches off the ground and hold. Easier than a plank but a good start.

LtdEdition01 · 17/05/2024 13:49

This sounds very inspiring, I’m 55 and feel like the menopause is just clobbering me and with high bp and borderline diabetes as well I need some inspiration. Will give this a go, great post.

BigDahliaFan · 17/05/2024 14:10

@Madamlulu I use flax seed as it's supposed to help with high blood pressure and is excellent source of fibre. It has to be ground though otherwise it goes right through you. Either buy ground and keep in fridge - or buy the seeds and grind it yourself (I use a coffee bean grinder) and then I keep the ground in the fridge.

I sprinkle it on most things, salads, omelettes, in yoghurt - about 2 to 3 tbspns a day.

I'm mid 50s and have started going to a weights class 3 times a week, it's made an amazing difference to my strength, tone and I no longer feel like a lump that needed help to get off the sofa.

I can get up off the floor without thinking about it now rather than flailing about like a beached whale.

And have gone from a 16 heading to an 18 and am now a 16 heading to a 14. Also I've lost a stone and a half. Still got the same to lose really.

I cut out a lot of the crap I was drinking and eating in addition to my base basically healthy diet. I'm now looking critically at portion sizes in my healthy diet...eating more protein as well.

I feel vaguely unhappy if I don't have carbs but I'm trying to cut down on the good wholefood ones I don't eat just from a calories in calories out point of view.

ThatTimeIKnewFamousPeople · 17/05/2024 14:34

Do you take the chaffles to work and eat cold like a sandwich? Or is it hot like an omelette?

Mirabai · 17/05/2024 15:51

It’s basically a cheese omelette/frittata - you don’t need a special pan for that.

Certainly post 50 low sugar low refined carbs help.

I have found some excellent yoga for stomach and core muscles on YT, which are not too demanding. Great for menopausal ladies who suddenly find they’re putting weight on their stomach.

ClipClopperDontStopper · 17/05/2024 15:52

it's a denser and chewier texture than a fritatta. at least mine are.
